I'm So Nervous I need a little reassurance. Pistol is 3 years old and going in for his neuter on the 29th of this month. I bought him from a breeder who was going to keep him for stud, but he didn't quite live up to her standards for breeding. He was not neutered. I have put it off because he is so small. He weighs just over five pounds. We have just gotten a Shih Tzu female and do not want any puppies. I am very nervous about having this done. He is having his pre op testing done on Tuesday, and his neuter is Friday. Jazz the Shih Tzu gets spayed on April 5th. I would like to hear from others who have had their small ones under anesthesia with good results. |
Sorry I can't help you but I'm sure others can. Stay tuned and blessings on your puppies operations!! Oh, welcome to YT too!!! |
Hello!!! My little girl Lola was 4 lbs when she was spayed and she did wonderful....it took me three years to get her spayed because I was so worried. Im sure others will chime in too along with maybe some suggestions! Good luck. |
Keylo was spayed between 10 & 12 weeks old. She was less than 3 pounds and came through fine. Be sure a good anesthesia is being used. U can ask the name and Google it and ask on here. Does ur vet work with a good number of small breeds? I'm sure the answer is yes. He should be acting like it didn't happen the next day. Prayers to Pistol for a safe procedure and fast healing. Better to do it now at 3yo. |
I understand being nervous -- I always cry my eyes out when I have to drop off my pups. There are many people here with small dogs who have been under anesthesia without incident. Very good doing the pre-op blood tests. Sending best wishes for Pistol. |
Lexie has been under many times, for dental, for spaying and for C-section all without incident. She's 5 lbs. The vet gives her a lot of IV fluids before sedation & that seems to help with keeping her vitals stable. Before doing that, her blood pressure would get kind of low. Your little guy will be fine! I'd say don' worry, but I know you will. It's normal. :) |
Thanks YT friends. I really need the encouragement. He has only been sick once before and I as a wreck. We had our first Yorkie pass away under anesthesia twenty years ago and I still miss him. It took me seventeen years to get another yorkie and now am just so scared. Not sure if I would have put him under ever if dh would not have brought home a female Shih Tzu. Love her to death but am not willing to chance having puppies. I will leave that to people who know what they are doing. |
I will keep you in my prayers and I am sure everything will work out fine. I am about to read all the posts on spaying as my little girl is 5 months old and I need to make a decision soon. I have no intention of letting her have puppies but from what I have read if she comes into season I will have to keep her in the house for 2-3 weeks. Today is the first day of Spring and I don't want to spend 3 weeks not walking my Roxy. |

I got Huey fixed at 6 months and since he is just 7.5 lbs now at 4 years old, he had to be less than or close to 5lbs at that time and he did great. This was my pre-YT days and since this is was the same vet I used for my 100lb lab and had (have) great confidence in, I didn't think to be concerned. Sometimes ignorance is bliss...we did do preop labs etc. |

I just got this done..3/14 and my little guy (5.6 lb) did just fine. I had a mobile vet come to my house and they did everything in my driveway! I also got his yearly shots done while he was under. I was a nervous wreck, but it made me feel better knowing that I could go check on him whenever I wanted. The vet also knew I was a mess with the whole thing and kept me updated throughout (I had another dog getting shots, and my MIL's dog getting neutered too). I got 2 doses of medicine to give him the next 2 days, and he was just fine after they were finished. I am still worried about him jumping and things, but he does it anyways. Find out what they use for pain meds after, and how they put them to sleep. For mine, they used gas, so it was a quicker wake-up. I think it also made them less drowsy. |
We had Laddy done at 3 years old, he did great. He was 3.8lbs at the time and is now 4.8. A much needed extra pound, he looks so much healthier now. Prayers for your little guy. |
I didnt mean to make light...and im very sorry for the loss of your baby that passed away...i would be worried like crazy too..in fact i always call my vet too many times. thankfully the manager puts up with me and answers all my questions and that usually makes me feel better. best wishes for a successful procedure with no issues. |
I just had Chloe spayed yesterday. She weighs 4.7 lbs. She did great. I was so worried though, so I understand. Praying for a safe procedure and quick recovery for both your babies. Please keep us posted. |
