Drakes Dad | 03-19-2013 08:31 PM | Hawks are bad news for sure, but be even more cautious of OWLS at night. A Hawk would have a problem carrying a small dog weighting over 5 Lbs. due to the fact that as large as Hawks are they only weigh about 3 Lbs full grown and cannot carry much more than their own weight. BUT they can attack and kill a much larger prey on the ground, just not fly off with it. Remember a squirrel only weighs around a pound and most Rabbits are less than 3 Lbs. A Hawk can grab and fly with these animals. A 6+ Lb. dog would be a challenge for them to fly off with.
Fear the OWL!!! This raptor is known as "Silent Death"!! They can attack in the night and never make a sound. The "Stealth Fighter" of the Bird family. Their wing and tail feather makeup is the perfect design for quite flight. Also they have perfect night vision. Owls have been known to attack roosting Hawks at night. They are larger and more powerful than a Hawk and can carry off prey in flight weighing as much as 12 Lbs. They are not easily intimidated by Humans like Hawks are and will stand their ground to get their target prey. Even though they are considered to be nocturnal, they will also hunt during daylight if hungry.
If you are out at night and hear the Hoot of an Owl, even if does not sound real close by, PICK UP your dog and CARRY it indoors.
Not meaning to scare anyone by what I have said, but to make you more aware of this common danger. Country City, Suburbs, they are there. |
