| ![]() how do you do it without the dog torturing you for food? we get up at 5:00 am and if she has a spaying at 8:00 that is 3 hours past her feeding time...she has to eat immediately when she gets up...what do you do? Can't giver her anything but water......right...? somtimes when she hasn't had food she will throwup if she has an empty stomach....how do you handle the whining and stink eyes that I know will be coming....can you give a bully stick or anything like that for her to chew on? |

| ![]() I just recently went through this with Jada when she had her dental. It isn't easy but you cannot give in. It is my understanding you have to withhold water also. We also get up at 5am and she is expecting her breakfast immediately. You just have to be strong.

| ![]() I agree with above, NO water. Withholding food and water is as hard for me as dropping them off at the vet. It is a difficult necessity. My guys would be happy going for a walk to distract them, but then I worry that they would need water. What I end up doing is carrying them around outside, talking to them until it is time to go.

| ![]() Try giving an additional feeding at the latest possible time before the cut off. The additional meal at night time should be enough to hold your dog over until you get her to the vet. They want to prevent your dog from vomiting while it has a tube in it's throat during surgery. It is very important that you withhold the food and water for the time frame given by the vet. |

YT 2000 Club Member | ![]() I feel your pain! Teeka will have her spay done in a little over a week. She too, always eats after she does her duties outside. I think I will feed her a little before she goes to bed to hold her over, maybe around 7:00. My vet says its ok to give a drop of Nutri-Cal to keep their blood sugar up, if you are worried about hypoglycemia.

| ![]() I want to add, I didn't feed Bogie until after I dropped Jada off at the vet. I thought it would just seem to cruel for her to see her brother eating when she couldn't. I also didn't eat myself. I did give extra treats of a few bites of her kibble and frozen green beans before 10pm the night before her procedure.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() It is hard. I try and feed them at the last possible time the night before which sometimes works. Mine can tell time so I have a hard time. lol I try and get up and keep myself busy doing things until it's time to leave. Sometimes they settle down when I'm up and about. I also don't feed any of them until I get the one going in to the vet. Good luck stay strong.

| ![]() I feed a complete meal just before the cut off time. I will especially do this with curri since she throws up bile when her tummy is empty. If my vet says no food after midnight I will feed them both at 11:30 pm. They will still want breakfast buT not truly need it as badly. Good luck!

| ![]() We understand. Some times we have to do things that upset them and make us feel awful, for their own good. We just have to be the Mama and do it. Gracie hates taking medication. She hides, tries to jump off my lap, even growls and finally gags and cries. I give her her pills in a matter of fact calm way, I know they are a must for her health and well being. You are a good parent. If you weren't a good Mama, you wouldn't be bothered about her being hungry. No water please.
