??BEST Carpet Cleaner for Urine Smell???? Shoot! I'm not exactly sure what forum to put this in so I'm sticking it here... Ever since I kept my niece's chi a couple of weeks ago (by the way, he's coming back tomorrow for a couple of weeks as she goes in the hospital again), I have been trying different products to get the urine smell out of my carpet and padding in the one spot I kept him. I have a new set up this time so it won't happen again, but this room smells like a friggin urinal. HELP! What is the best product and routine for cleaning the carpet? Do I shampoo first, then spray with an enzyme spray..vice versa? Which enzyme spray/cleaner is best (because I obviously haven't found it lol)??? I rent this house so I have got to figure this out. I know you all have been thru this right? What worked? Thanks!! |
Urine is mostly sterile water (unless your pet has an infection) and protein. The protein is what causes the smell and what causes the color. It's easy enough to get the urine and protein off a hard surface, but getting all the protein off soft surfaces is almost impossible. So they developed cleaners with enzymes that are actually bacteria that "eat" the protein. In other words, you aren’t “killing the protein” or dissolving the protein, or rinsing it away, critters are actually eating it up. The problem is this takes some time, it's not accomplished in minutes, it happens as the surface is drying and it may take more than one dose of cleaner. I've tried several cleaners, Nature's Miracle is so far my favorite because it doesn't leave a line of demarcation like other cleaner and I can even use it on my cream colored linen sofa with no problem. I think the best way to tackle the problem is to spay with enzyme cleaner, cover with a towel or pee pad so that he doesn’t go back to the same spot while it’s drying. Then you can shampoo or steam clean. There are some type of shampoos that are made for pets and you can see how well they work by using a black light. Urine shows up white under a black light. |
When we first got Zeus, he was AWFUL about peeing on the carpet. What I did was, at night, turn off all the lights and take a black light to everything. WalMart sells them in these long tubes/holders for like...$11 or something like that. WORTH IT! Then I just sprayed the area until it no longer illuminated under the light (it's bright green). Here's the light: Lights of America Blacklight, 24 Inch Blacklight, Fluorescent Blacklight Bulb, Blacklight Fixture It comes with an on/off switch in the container/fixture. We were using the white bottle of Nature's Miracle, but the red bottle worked better, IMO. We have cream-colored carpet, also a rental. |
If you make sure to clean the spots as they happen it will help with the smell and staining. I use a spray bottle mixed with some of the carpet cleaning solution (I use Bissle/pets)and water to spot clean. MIx 20% cleaner with 80% water. 1. Get as much of the urine up with a cloth as you can. Should only be damp to the touch. 2 Spray with cleaning solution, rub in the area with finger tips. 3. Dab the area with a clean cloth. |
Loving the ideas previously posted but I think Nature's Miracle has worked the best for us so far. I have tried others but Nature's Miracle is best. |

Arm & Hammer Carpet & Room Pet Fresh Odor Eliminator Works really good. I cleaned every saturday and put this on my carpet. The longer you let it sit the better it works. It even gets the pee out of the carpet. I would put mine down on saturday and wouldnt get it up until the saturday but only because I liked the way it smells. I got mine from the dollar store and need to go get some more. |
Thanks so much!! I will try these tips...where do you get Nature's Miracle? Well, I suppose I could quit being lazy and google it. lol |
Natures miracle.... I don't have carpet anymore.... Completely ceramic tiled and hardwood floored the whole house, lol.... But I still add natures miracle to my mop water just in case of any accidental drizzles! |
Oh... Petsmart or petco carry it |

Thanks! I just did a order to pick up at my walmart on the blacklight..they have it in stock so no waiting. I'm scared!! LOL (it's gonna be bad because that little bugger was here for 2 weeks in that spot and used the pee pads 1/2 the time..I promise you..it smells gawd awful.) Going to Petsmart to get the Natures Miracle. At least I learned. All other rooms in my house are hard surface and I have a super long hall way. I bought a gate (never used one with Mandie or Shelby). I have my long hallway set up now for him..this is for the 10 hours a day I'm at work, of course. Then we'll get play time when I get home and he always just puts himself to bed..he did last time anyway lol |
Jefferson pet supply (I think that's the name) lots of times will have nature's miracle on sale w good shipping...for those that don't need it right this day. I swear by Nature's Miracle and even get the laundry boost for washing the girls' bedding. What I've learned is that its best to use the product first before trying ANY shampoo or other type cleaner..I've also found a recipe on pinterest that poster swears by....im trying it this week and ill let you know how it does!! |

Amazon has the one I use....it is URINE OFF and it is in the black gallon container, professional strngth....I had ordered mine directly from the manufacturer and pad $75.00/gallon jug a while back. Amazon has it for $20.00/gallon. |
Ok, so do I use that URINE OFF in a shampoo machine? I'm just did the Nature's Miracle and I can tell it is working, but it will definitely need another (or more) treatments. I would like to shampoo anyway, so if that URINE OFF goes in the machine, I would go ahead and go for it...? Thanks everyone! Oh, and Bobbi..let me know how that test goes for you, please :) |

If there's no more green, keep looking. You may be missing spots. |
Yeah, umm, I'm scared of the blacklight but I will do it tomorrow. I refused to do it before my first try with NM. LOL!! (yeah, I'm a big ole chicken scaredy cat) |

Ok, ok..I actually did go get the blacklight. I will do it tomorrow and re-spray :) |
If you are still smelling it Terri you might not have gotten NM down to the pad. The other thing is...it works until its FULLY dried...if area is damp..its still working! I believe NM can be used for "old" stains too but...I've found it works best on stains I haven't tried anything else on...including shampoo...I always have a gallon of NM on hand. Ill let you know how the "make it yourself" works!!! |
We use Oreck and their products. Does an excellent job. |
Yes, you can put the Urine Off in the shampooer. I used that in the shampoo machine, and then the Natures Miracle as a spot treatment. |
I swear by natures miracle....great stuff, thanks for the reminder, I need to go get some more!!! |

Here is the link to Urine Off on amazon: ![]() |
Long story short... We got new carpets couple months ago. I noticed couple spots where Zoey marked... so I used NM and some other cleaner that's supposed to work wonders. I couldn't see or smell the urine so I thought it worked. Used the blacklight and the spot was still there. Thankfully, I think I found a method that worked for me so I wanted to share. Materials needed: Hydrogen peroxide White Towel Iron Soak the area with hydrogen peroxide. Make sure the area is totally soaked. Place the towel over it and then iron. I tried it couple spots already and it worked. I'll do the rest tomorrow night and also will take before/after pictures. |
I don't get how any product can get it clean all the way down to the carpet pad? Also if it's a really bad pee stain, it can get down into the subfloor also. Toto is still naughty even though I take him out almost every hour. We are changing out all the carpet to laminate. |
