At what age did your fur babies start to sleep with you? Just kinda curious. I would love to have Bentley sleep with me but he is just 12 1/2 weeks old so I'm sure it's too soon. He sleeps real well in his bedtime crate so it's not a matter of him needing it. I just want my baby with me. He's gotten real consistent and whimpers for a 5am poop run. I try to take him back to bed with me for that last hour but all he wants at that point is to devil, and he's still in the play bite stage so I don't go for that. Back in his crate he goes. My guess is 6 month of age. Figured he'd be fully house broken by then, and I could trust him if he roams in my room at nite. So if you let your fur babies sleep with you at what age did you allow it? |
mine have all slept with me since the first day i had them. just remember though imo once they do they will never wanna sleep in another place. when cedric was a baby he just adjusted to lights out means no playing or biting or what not....it's sleep time. they do have stairs so if they are thirsty or need to potty on their pad they can go up and down as needed. we got cedric at 11 weeks and keylo at 15ish weeks and lola was 4 1.2 years old when she came to us. |
Gosh...I want to say up until a year? Toki loved the heck out of her crate and woul take toys in there and take naps there and even took herself to bed. Once we started putting her in our bed though, we ruined her hahaha. She still does well in crates at the vet and day cares and we put her in it for long car rides. But she loves being in bed with us :) |
Clyde started sleeping in my bed with me from the moment I brought him home. He was 4 months old at that point. Dexter slept in a crate on my bed for the first two weeks, and then after that he slept without the crate on my bed (Dexter was about 14 weeks old). |
I will also add that putting her in bed with us wasn't really related to her potty training progress. She has always done pretty well with housebreaking but I just was nervous about our bed being so high and her being so small. Our bed is now on the box spring on the floor and she is big enough to where I don't worry so much. |
3 months old |
I think it's also important to look at how high your bed is off the ground. I have seen other YTers post that their beds are on the floor so they don't have far to go should they fall off the bed. We aren't letting Princess Sophie sleep with us until she's much older and we have added stairs that she can navigate as out bed is a 4-poster and very high off the ground. Now with that said I will admit that after she goes potty early in the morning I usually bring her into bed with me as long as she will cuddle and go back to sleep. LOL But then I don't really get to go back to sleep. We have already discovered that Sophie needs less sleep than I do. LOL |
Yes, I definitely need doggie steps. I guess I'll keep trying to get him to settle down in the bed with me early morning and see where it goes from there. That would be helpful 2 fold. My biggest issue is for him play=bite mommy. If he would just play with a toy on the bed I would be fine with that as a start. Maybe I can finally get through to him bite=no mommy after putting him in his kennel enough times. lol |
Chloe has slept with us since I brought her home at 9 weeks. When she needs to go out, she just whines and I get up with her. |
When we brought KS home at 14 weeks I swore I was going to be one of those moms who did not allow the dog in the bed with us. I think in total she's slept in her big girl bed about 10 times since we got her....in Oct 2011. So needless to say, she wiggled her way into our bed very early and has been there ever since. I usually wake at least once a night to potty and let her down with me. She goes to her pad and then we go back to bed together. |
My pups have slept in our bed since day one! Just remember, they will always want to sleep with you if you start this. I personally love it but not all people do. We have never used a crate except when we are gone for short periods. Actually Teeka has never been in a crate and she is 7 months. :) |
The first night I got her. :) |
Second night I got her. 10 weeks old. Did fin in crate first night, then second night cried to come out. Put her to bed with us and she fell asleep. Been sleeping all night since then! |
From day one, lol. Pixie at any rate. Sabre doesn't like to sleep with us in the bed. Given a choice, he will sleep on the floor. When he's feeling particularly affectionate, he'll sleep on a corner of the bed. I remember the first time he actually slept with us the full night. I felt like he had decided we weren't too bad and he liked us after all. He was about 5 months I believe. But Sabre is truly a big dog in a little dog body. He doesn't do the lap dog thing, being much more comfortable curled at your feet or in front of the electric fireplace like he's a labrador or something. And when he does decide to join us in bed, his spot is at the foot of the bed. Midget like Pixie, from day one, they jostle for preferential spot next to me. Fatty the foster maltese started hopping on the bed with us about a week after she moved in. She is either on the floor at the foot of the bed, or at the foot of the bed, on the opposite side from Sabre. I'm a light sleeper, and I prefer having babies in bed with me, because I can feel when they shift, and can tell if the babies have to go potty. I think this is why Pixie was pad trained completely inside 2 weeks, and we're still working on Sabre. Midget is mostly pad trained, and I think her accidents are her following behind Sabre and not Pixie. |
Morgan slept with us at age of 5 months if we didn't he would want up every 3 hours to go outside to go potty but the minute we put him in bed he sleeps all night long |
The first night he came home:) |
About 10-14 months for us. For two major reasons: 1. He had FHO surgeries and couldn't sleep with us for a while (our bed's high up off the ground, too) and 2. I was paranoid when he was smaller - was afraid my BF would roll over and smash P-Nut - this led to many sleepless nights for me when we first tried it, so we kept him in his exercise pen at night till he got bigger. Once he got bigger and was recovered from surgery, he started sleeping with us every night and he loves it. :D We've decided to replace the queen sized bed with a king so there's more room for "all" of us and a potential new pup (someday). |
Alfie sleeps in his own huge (well huge to him) kitchen and living room, where he has 3 beds, 2 beds in the living room, one on the floor and one on the couch and another under the radiator in the kitchen. He has no problem at all with this, never whimpers or barks and can get to his puppy pads in hall and kitchen without a sound. |
The first puppy I was determined not to give in...no one slept for an entire week. I am old...I need sleep. The ones that I purchased after immediately went in our beds. The pups I hold back from a litter...are allowed bed privileges after their litter mates have gone to new homes. |

Brutus has been in my bed since night 2. Only peed once, but has barfed several times - he has issues that have since been taken care of. I love waking up to him pawing my face and his kisses. I wouldn't have it any other way. The joke around the house is "where is Brutey"? He naps in his bed, which is king size and we do have steps for him. We also have steps for him to get onto my sons bed, which I move when DH snores to loud and I go into the spare bedroom. |

I really appreciate all the insight from everyone. I want my baby in bed with me, hopefully I will get over the fear of not hearing him and him wetting my bed and take him to bed in when I go to sleep. |
He started sleeping with me about a year ago. My DH feels very strongly that our bed is not the place for Oscar. Buuuutttt....when I get home from work at 7am I let Oscar out of his crate to go potty then sneek him into bed with us! I only work on the weekends so DH is still asleep when Oscar and I come to bed HEHE! During the week Oscar gets to sleep in bed with me after DH goes to work. He likes to stay tucked behind my knees or up against my stomach unless I get restless then he lays on his blankey on the floor on my side of the bed. DH has caught him sleeping in the bed a few times but just shakes his head and gives me the stink eye! |
Not sure what to do There were only a couple of times I let Titus play/cuddle with me in my bed but I don't want him to get used to it because 1) hes not potty trained 2) My bed is high off the ground. I want him to get used to sleeping in his crate but he cries and cries instead lol I'm not sure what to do |
When my Emily arrived she was already 5 months, & I had a cute Hello Kitty Doggy bed with blankets all ready for her. She was more than happy sleeping in her bed, & all of a sudden she was begging to get in bed with me ?? I came home from work & found my sister & Emily relaxing in bed watching TV !!! So after that there was not keep her out of the bed, but she will nap in her own bed. |
Sleeping Lahja (Finnish for gift) slept in my bed from the day I got her. Although she had her own bed the just jumped out of it and took over my bed and my lazyboy chair! Oh my goodness!!! But I love her so, I don't care!!! |
Gracie has slept with me from the first night. I had started out putting her crate on the bed so she could see me but that did not work so I folded up a beach towel and let her lay next to me. I kept one arm around her so I could tell if she stirred. She slept all night except for once when she got up, went pee in the carrier, and came back and went to sleep on the towel. I have to say she was a dream to potty train and she was a good sleeper so it has never been a problem. After raising 5 kids it was really pretty easy. If your pup is not a good sleeper it may take longer than that. It also depends on how you potty train. When Gracie was about 6 months old I purchased some pet steps so she could get up and down by herself. |

I was determined to be very structured with him since everything I read has been yorkies can be very hard to train. Even if I am going to stay up the lights in my bedroom go out right after I put him into his kennel. First 2 nights he whimpered but only for 5 minutes. Only thing I would do it quietly sush him or say settle down. Did not actually talk to him or use his name. Just a quick something to let him know it was not alone. Since then sleepy or awake, if I say it's bedtime he settles right down. Best suggestion is if you are not comfortable with your baby sleeping with you yet is work on a routine that your pup can learn hey this means I settle down now. Playing him out till he's practically asleep on his feet doesn't hurt either. ;) Good luck with Titus. It's so easy for them to pull at our heartstrings. |
Quick update 1 Attachment(s) Bentley got up at 4 to potty. I brought him to bed with me after. He was not a devilish like he was the previous night when I ended up putting him back in his kennel. He tugged at pillows and roamed a little around the be about 30 minutes and then he settled down. Below is what I woke up to at 7 am. :D Thanks everyone for your stories. You are all great this is such a friendly forum. :yorkietal |
