does your pup have free access to your bed
 

I have wondered about this a while and just saw a thread that made me think of my experience with using pet stairs. My sister uses them and does not have a problem, but with Lola a totally different story, so I was wondering what others have experienced.

This is what happened with us, for the sake of Lola's safety I removed the steps from the bed in about two weeks. My bed is pretty high, she took to climbing up them quickly, but since she moves pretty fast she started leaping over several steps when she wanted down, then she started bypassing the steps and would jump from the bed to the floor, thankfully we have carpet. She would bring a toy up with her then purposely drop it off the side and jump down to get it over and over again. For a good year she had slept in the bed but had never jumped off, now she was doing in on a regular basis. Before long, just after we would fall asleep she would jump down in search of a toy to bring back up to squeak. My DH and I would scour the room each night for toys, but LOL that bugger had lots of hiding places. I also use my bed to lay things out on, like laundry to fold, shopping bags to un pack, suitcases etc, well now all this was fair game for Lola as my bed became her big playpen. In addition to the bed she now could get on our night stands where I found her standing several times, so I had to be careful what I left sitting on them. Making the bed was a hoot, she definitely loved to be on that act. Since the stairs were not high enough I positioned them against a hope chest that was at the foot of the bed, she soon realized that she could bypass the steps and jump on the chest to get quicker access to the bed. As you know, all this jumping is not good for a yorkies legs. So not only did the stairs have to go I also had to move the chest away from the bed. All in all it worked out fine I wound up putting the chest under the window at the end of my bedroom with the stairs next to it, she visits that area a lot during the day since it gives her a great view of the wildlife outside the window. Every dog is different so with another dog the experiences could be quite different, but for my crazy little Lola they had to be moved, so now twice a day when I am ready to go to bed she gets carried up and carried down and LOL life is normal again. I attached a pic of the steps with Lola on the chest, she knew I was packing and wanted to made sure she went along, which she did.

I know there are a lot of pet steps out there so for those that use them do you like your pups to have free access to your bed.

mine do but they use the stairs each and everytime. i also have them in the living room for the furniture. thankfully they use them to my knowledge each time correctly and i do watch to be sure when i am home because i dont want them to get hurt.

I once bought some dog steps and after Toki begrudgingly walked up them with tons of coaxing and treats, she would just jump over the entire staircase to get off the furniture which seemed way more dangerous than her just normally jumping on/off. So she doesn't have unsupervised access to our bed and other high places. Little daredevil!

Lola is the luckiest dog to have a view like that when watching out the window!

You mean do I have access to my own bed? lol They think they allow me to sleep with them. I don't have stairs but I need to get some. I love your view and those stairs! Where did you get those stairs? :)

thanks, although I would trade that view right now for some warm weather, currently the lake is frozen and covered with snow.

The steps were a gift, they are a solid piece of cut foam and the gal that gave them to me covered them in faux fur. I believe she just cut and hot glued the material on to it. She bought it from a local foam dealer.

We bought pet stairs for our girls, but they would not use them at all. Two of our girls jump up onto the bed at night and jump down in the morning. Jasmine, has never attempted to jump up or down from our bed. She comes to bed and just stands at the side waiting to be picked up. Jasmine is my little Velcro Diva Baby. In the morning, Jasmine goes to the side of our bed and waits to be put down on the floor. I know it would be better if the other two girls didn't jump up/down from our bed (high bed), but they do stay in bed all night until we get up.

Okay lets trade for a little while. My warm white sandy beaches, for your snow and frozen lake. :D

I actually told my hubby when Ahi was little to make her some stairs out of foam. I think we will do that now. :)

I need to get stairs I guess but I don't think Mandie would use them. She's just so energetic, athletic and hyper...she's definitely a jumper. She definitely has free access to the bed. We have the bed on the floor, though..no frame..just to keep it from being WAY high.

I ended up putting my bed on the floor. It's not even on the boxspring. My boys were leaping off of the bed to race each other to a window on the other side of the room.

There is no way they would take the time to use the steps, which is why they do not have access to our staircase either. They would definitely tumble down racing each other to the door.

If I ever put my bed together again, I would probably try a ramp for the dogs.

Lola's so cute perched by the window. :) That IS as beautiful view! You are smart to have made those changes, cuz you never know when one wrong jump ends in injury. My Lexie does not get on my bed unless I (rarely) put her there. She does use stairs to get on my sofa. When she was 18 mos, she jumped off the show table and broke her leg in 3 places, so now she doesn't even consider jumping off anything more than about the height of a stair step. At least she learned from her mistake!

Laddy does the same thing Lola does so I don't let them on my bed. Kyra does the same with the sofa and steps she will not jump up on things but she will at times decide to jump off so she has to be watched constantly when she is not on the floor.

I figured Lola would not be the only one doing this, I really wish I never tried the pet steps, up until then she never would have thought about jumping off the bed. She does not do it often any longer but if my husband puts her up on the bed before I am ready to get in, she will still jump down to come looking for me, we have had a few of I TOLD YOU NOT TO PUT HER ON THE BED !!moments but he is learning :D

I met a gal in NY that was saying how her yorkie knows that she is not allowed to jump off things, I did not say much but I was wondering how the heck do you keep her from doing that, so far I have not been very successful in teaching Lola that.

Well our bed is upstairs now. Katie Scarlett knows she's not allowed up the stairs without me. We keep the door at the top of the steps closed as well. Now when it is bed time KS sleeps with us but I put her up on the bed. We have a high bed too. She's never jumped off to my knowledge. I would be scared to death if she did though. That's a long way down and landing on hardwood floors would not be good. I would put up steps but I can't find any that would go high enough.

I don't have pet stairs. I wasn't sure what to do when I first got Calleigh. She is too small to jump up on the bed. All of the pet stairs I looked at didn't reach my bed. I put her up on the bed and take her off. She sleeps with me all night. If I'm out of the room and she wants to get down, she will whine loud enough for me to hear her. It took a long time for me to get comfortable with that, but the bed is so high, she is afraid to jump down. This works for us, but I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. Good luck.

Lots of training! I don't know how, but Max & Teddy's breeder had all of her dogs trained to not jump on or off anything.

My boys are impossible if they think someone is at the door or a school bus is passing by the house.

Mine use a ramp to get up and down off my bed. They were taught from day one to use it so they have never learned to jump up or down off anything. So it works for us as I know they will be safe. Lola is a cute little monkey!

Mine use to but after number 3 in our bed we were loosing too much sleep. It was hard for me and the DH to have to function on the amount of sleep we were getting when they were in our bed. It just got to be too much. So they had to go, but when they were, I made my own stairs for them to use.

my bed was to tall also, so the trunk functioned as the top step. IMHO if you are doing well without the steps and you only want your pup on the bed for sleeping I would not bother getting steps, like what happened to me you might be introducing something that winds up creating behavior that you don't want. When I stay at my sisters house I will not even let Lola sleep on the bed, her guest room has a wood floor and I high bed, I am so afraid Lola will jump off or I will knoch her off while sleeping. It's really scary for small pets since beds are getting so high now.

Mine has leanred the hard way not to jump off things. She did and broke her leg. After a very expensive surgery she is crated for 6 weeks. You would think she would get it but she still trie to jump in her pen! (it has a top) I have to take her out of it and put her in the small crate when she gets stir crazy to calm her down or she would damage that leg again! So when she is allowed access to the house again she will NOT be allowed up on the furniture at all. We have about 6 different beds scattered around the house for her when she is out of crate duty and the kids know they can only sit on the floor with her....its a long 6 weeks!

Our yorkies don't go near out bed unless we are in it. Neither one will jump onto of off of our bed and it is not very high. I guess we are lucky in that area! :)

We have steps for Huey to get on the bed. He has free access. We got the stairs when he kept trying to jump up and the bed was too high for him to make the jump. He kept bouncing off the side until he would finally scramble up there. He always uses the stairs to get up but is about 30/70 with using them to get down. 70% he still jumps off the bed to the hardwood. I hate it and know how dangerous this is for him, but this is my same daredevil who leaps from sofa to recliner and who's favorite spot to sleep besides the bed is the top of the back of the recliner. He has jumped from there a couple of times and his daddy has given him a stern talking to...but I could see the fear in Jeffs eyes when Huey went flying across the room from that height:eek: :eek: We try to watch for signs he is gonna jump, like gathering himself for the leap and we tell him "NO". So far, that seems to be working. Now, when getting off the bed, most often he walks to the edge and drops lightly to the ground. It is the excited, flying leaps that scare me.

My pup has always been a jumper since day one. She climbed out of the playpen, climbed over baby gates, and she jumps off and on the bed and sofas. I do have stairs, and she never used it. I have a ottoman at the foot of the bed she uses, but that's about it. Now she's 11 months old and is running with a skip sometimes. Vet said she's fine. So I don't know?????

Yes, Luma sleeps snug as a bug between mama and daddy. Rosie will sleep in her crate until I feel comfortable with her size and she's trained to use the steps.

ZoE has free access to my bed whenever she wants. If fact, many evenings, when I'm still up doing stuff around the house, she'll take herself off to bed. I'll notice she's not been around for a while and I go looking for her, and there she is snuggled up on my bed snoozing away.

My bed is not crazy high...I can get in it without steps :D So I just put a small bench next to it (the kind from a makeup vanity), and in front of the vanity bench is a footstool....so basically, I made "steps" using stuff I had around the house :)

I love my ramp....scalloped top for traction...quick and easy access both up and down....no jumping down the ramp!

Tibbe has full access to the bed and uses the doggie ramp or steps. If he's unhappy with me, he'll go down the hall and up onto the bed and lie down on the pillows with his back to the door and won't look at me and will stay there until he's over his pique.

Winston is only on the bed when we put him there, he could never jump that high, he'll
usually stay there all night til we get up...but when he wants down...he steps off and gently lands on the carpeted floor, straight down...he doesn't leap off. I always thought that was so funny, the way he just steps off the bed.
