how to wash my yorkie who has stitches My girl had leg surgery and a bone graft last week. So she has stitches in two places and is recovering in the crate for 6 weeks. She smells so bad! Pee and doggy. Its hard to even hold her (esp since I have allergies to pet dander so its so much worse as it gets all over my clothes) I tried using the wipes but it makes her itchy and she has an elizabethian collar on so that would be torchure. any suggestions for my sweet smelly? ;) |
I would definitely steer clear of the areas where the stitches are. But perhaps for the other areas, get some quick rinse baby shampoo, a washcloth, and 2 bowls of water. Spot shampoo and rinse various areas individually. Just take it slow and be extremely careful to not go anywhere near the area of the stitches. |
Did you ask the surgeon? it might be ok to spray the area but not let it be submerged in water. or is there a way to wrap the leg in gause and then put a plastic bag or plastic wrap around the leg so it dont get wet while you clean the rest of her? |
I've never had a little girl, but I'm concerned that she's stinky after one week, is this usual? With boys, the breeder told me to leave a little "pee string" that's some hair at the tip of the penis that directs the urine away from the coat. Also, makes sure the anus area is kept clipped so that no poop sticks to that. I agree, some of those baby wipes aren’t so gentle, and may have perfumes that can cause itching. Mandies Mom has some good ideas, and the only thing I could think of was covering the injured leg in a plastic bag and keeping it up with a couple of hand bands, obviously don’t put them on too tight, but you can only do that, once she’s allowed to stand. Sending healing prayers for your little girl. |
A plastic bag is actually a good idea, Nancy! I know back when I broke my arm and had a cast, this is what I would do so I could get a bath and not be stinky ;) |

its been a lot longer than a week. The first vet cast her which was totally wrong so she was in that for 5 weeks for nothing. I was so mad! its been more like 6-7 weeks... I am so afraid she will fight me if i put a bag on her an pull back injuring her plate. She fights me with medicine and even coming out of her smaller crate because shes scared. She just peed in her small crate so even more stinky.. Dog barks after she pees!! I have to put her in the bigger crate that has room for her bed and pee pad. She seems to know enough to stand with that leg up in the air. The surgeon told me she can be in one big enough for bed water/food and pee pad. I was just nervous that she would stand on it too much..the one in the hospital was bigger than the one shes in now. I lined it with a rubber mat to make it oft in case she decides to put her paws up on the wall. (whcih she does now and again but doesnt come down on that leg thank goodness) |

I know you said you'd try using wipes and they made her itch, but I'm wondering what kind of wipes you use. I've used Huggies Natural Care wipes on ZoE at the recommendation of her vet. They are ypoallergenic, fragrance free and alcohol-free. I buy them at Walmart. |
By the way... don't wet the stitches, it will loosen them. a plastic bag or saran wrap can cover the cast. |

shes off the leg for another 5 weeks. ugh.. well her coat is half long and half short..they shaved one side of her..she looks a little weird. No groomer will touch her right now so its up to me. I wish they had just shaved both sides. I can cut it myself but shes so nervous right now and has been through so much I dont want to add to her stress by making her stand still while she sees me come at her with shears. Ill try the a baby sensitive wipes,. I had bought natures remedy at the pet store but they just didnt work..I just want to blink forward 5.5 weeks! |
