Do you have a soft spot for a certain gender? I remember that for the longest time,I didnt care for male dogs.I always prefered females.Then,6 years ago,we went to visit a breeder with another female in mind (we already had 2 yorkie girls back then and wanted another) but for some reason I was drawn to the male of the litter. We ended up bringing him home and since then,I have a HUGE soft spot for the boys  Chicco (that was his name) died (he got heartworm when he was just 3) and I was crushed..but years later,Milo came into my life and I love him sooooooo very much  I just think that the boys are so afectionate and noble..their heart barely fits in that little chest!! :) I took a pic of him today..dont get me wrong,I love my girl too! But Milo is so special to me  http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/s...psdbecb826.jpg |
What a handsome fella. :) I feel that the males have the qualities that most would think a female would carry. Usually way more affectionate and open for cuddles. That's what it seems like to me. Although every Yorkie is different. |
I've only had a female yorkie, but have had both sexes of other breeds. I don't know, I think it just depends on the dog. I think there is always "that one," the doggie love of your life, and for me it's my little girl who only has eyes for me! :) Your boy is a doll! He just looks loving :) |

Awe, I just got my little girl recently, and she's one heck of a fighter. She's fiesty, stubborn, won't listen, potty training a pain. But she's the cutest little girl I've ever had. Not to mention she won't cuddle with me, and adores my hubby more. I do have a 6 year old boy who is the total opposite of her. He loves me to death, loyal, smart, listens, does tricks, and always wants kisses and hugs. So go figure.......I love both of them in their own special way! |
Boy or Girl Puppy ? I think gender differences become unimportant when Yorkies are spayed or neutered. I have raised, trained and loved both female and male Yorkies. I honestly think behavior is more a personality thing, than a gender thing. Right now I have four Yorkies, two of each. My boys are more physically affectionate. The boys are less demanding about being the top doggie and let the girls boss them. Abba Daddy is the sweetest most gentle Yorkie I have ever had. Rubin is ten years old and kind of set in his ways. He prefers people play to doggie interaction. For the most part Rubin is tolerant of fosters and has only had one fight in all these years. My girls are Gracie who was a rescue and came with many personality hang ups and Ginny Joy who I’ve had since she was a puppy. Gracie is the boss and more moody than the boys. She also will bite hard and nip the other dogs if they bother her. She is my little selfish diva. I love her 'had a bad start but, look at me now' attitude. Ginny Joy is very sweet, not as kissy as the boys. She loves brushing and mothering toys or foster puppies. So to answer the original question, look for personality, spay or neuter after sexual maturity* and don't worry about picking a boy or a girl. Love makes the perfect match. * I have read a lot lately about waiting to spay and neuter until a dog is sexually mature. Several studies conclude it is better for bones, teeth, organs and personality development. My Vet has convinced me it is a real advantage to wait until Yorkies are at least 1 year of age. |
I honestly believe it is a personality thing. When you click you click. I do love the girly dresses and bows . |

He was completely potty trained and then regressed for a while. We had to block off the rest of the house and start over with the porry training ;) Now,just incase,I have a mix of vinegar and alcohol that I spray where he marked to stop him from doing it again. As a rule,he´s very good about peeing on his rock :D Edited to add: I just realised I said Milo will be "spayed" in my last post lol.Sorry about that! I obviously meant he will be neutered lol. |
We have both although I truly believe boys are more affectionate... Love my baby boys!!! |
I have to say, that I prefer boy dogs to girl dogs. I have fostered a female Yorkshire terrier & owned a female Scottish terrier & my two current dogs are boys. In all, I do believe that everything really comes down to personality as to whether or not you will click with a dog, but I still prefer boy dogs. I think it is because I like boy names better >.< like Clyde & Dexter |
Truthfully, no. I had great experiences with both sexes. The first yorkie I ever met was a male one. I used to dog-sit him. It's because of him that I love the yorkie breed. Tatiana is my first (and only) yorkie. She's female. Yes, she has a different personality from the male yorkie I knew, but I understand her. We have similar personalities, and we love each other deeply. I guess I love both male and female yorkies. |
I have only had girl Yorkies but I have had other breeds in males. Honestly, I love both genders! I like my girl yorkies because I love dressing them up. But I have had male dogs, such as my Great Pyrenees, who I loved with all my heart! He was just a big baby. Milo is precious! |
Girls:) I love boy and girl dogs. With yorkies though, I generally prefer girls. Males more affectionate...wouldn't doubt it. I just like the yorkie girl personality overalll. They command resoect, havetheir own ideas, but love their owners very much in their own way. Makes it hard to train them though. |
He is adorable. I have always been partial to girls and when ever I am setting down you can be sure that the three of them will be right there on the recliner with me. They each have their place. One to the right, one to the left and one at my feet. They always sit the same place around me, it is so cute. |
I don't know about other breeds, but I have a huge soft spot for boy yorkies. And the bigger, the better - bring on the teapots! Ours is ultra-affectionate and must be on or near one of us much of the time. He's down to earth, very easy going - no attitude at all. Our personalities mesh well. I love girl yorkies, too, but the ones I've been around and dog sat definitely have a different "vibe" than the boys I've been around and my household just seems to click better with the male gender. |
I've had two male Yorkies and one female. Each gender seems to have its special sweetness so I can't really say I have a preference though I was terribly afraid to get another male when I got my Tibbe, my current Yorkie, for fear a male might mark, though Scotty, my other male Yorkie, never did mark. Still, I had heard so much about male marking, I had worked up a real worry. It was needless, though, as Tibbe is totally clean in the house and at 5 1/2 years, has never marked. I think my Jilly, the female, may have been a little calmer and more confident than Tibbe but she did not have the terrible start in life that my Tibbe did for his first 9 months, though she did have many illnesses and likely more than one injury due to her tiny size. |

I have both M/F. It's hard to explain but, I do recognize their gender, though I wouldn't say I treat/handle them differently. I raise/utilize my Dogs somewhat differently than others here. I take them hunting, and rely on their capabilities for full time security here. One might think that a Male would be better (security) than a Female, but, I assure you that is not the case. My Female Becca hunts, is just as alert and protective as are my Males. One difference I see is, that She's a lot "smoochier" than the Males. :kiss2: :luvu: :D |
I have only had 2 dogs and they have both been male, so I don't have any experience with a female dog. My hubby insisted on males both times. I know my Huey is a snuggler and a kisser, but since I got him so young, he wasn't quite properly socialized and has a tendency to be quite skittish at times. |
i have had both// morgan is my first yorkie and he is awesome |
hi Hi everyone, its been a while since I have posted. I was ill and had surgery. Then I had to jump back into work and my classwork when I was better. But thankfully I am back. I have a soft spot for little girls. I love female dogs probably because as a child, my father never wanted girl dogs because of puppies. Back in the day most people were not educated about spaying and neutering. They never wanted the girls unless they planned on selling the puppies which was rare. |
I finally realized the boys are more affectionate. That's why I got Pooky even though my toy Poodle is only 2. |

My Male Sneakers, is absolutely the most "aloof" Dog I've ever had, and My Junior Male Ichabod is not far behind him. When approaching Sneakers, like taking his head between my hands, and getting nose to nose with him for a kiss. He will turn his head away, resisting contact, but I can see his tail wagging when I do that. However, when My Female Becca puts her nose up to his, he kisses her willingly. I'm so jealous :(...:D |
I have two girls and a boy...the girls are much calmer than my rambunctious male....they are wonderful snugglers, where as my boy can't sit still for five minutes....he is forever getting the girls all worked up to the point of one of them getting ticked and the next thing you know there is a growl....followed by a bark...the big bruiser just will not back off...pretty cute to watch, as the girls are a third of his weight. |

One thing that I see is absolutely adorable... Ichabod is the most pesky Puppy I've ever raised ! He is just relentless in wanting to play and gets sorta rough with My Female Becca. She is the consummate Alpha Female, and raising Ickey like he was hers, and takes it all in. Anyway, occasionally Ickey forgets that My Male Sneakers is a no "BS" type Dog. Very Alpha Male, serious, and all that goes with that "position". Ickey, in his exuberance,, tries to play with Sneakers like he does Becca. Nipping at his feet, rolling over in submission, only to let Sneak back up a little, and Ickey attacks again. Sometimes, Sneakers gets enough of Ickey's puppyness, and slams him down with his paw, takes his whole head in his mouth, and growls viciously ! Now, here's what happens that's so cute... Becca, seeing Sneakers anger, rushes over to Sneakers, takes his cheek hair in her mouth, and ever so gently pulls him away from Ickey. When I saw that the first time, my Heart just melted. :2hearts2: I think I'm the luckiest guy in the world, to have been blessed with such great animals. |
That is soooo adorable!!!! |

I have seen my kitties break up dogs that were getting too rough, and my dogs break up kitties that were getting too rough. I've seen my kitties double up their 'fists' after 'stiff-leg walking' across the floor to 'bonk' on the head another kitty who they've deemed deserved it. I've seen one of my kitties 'thunk' Yorkie Mia's head to the kitchen floor more than once because she was kissing him so much he couldn't catch his breath. :p But... That is just the cutest thing! How sweet is Becca to do that? I love it! :D |
