My hubby wants a real dog... I have two little babies Tucker and Lola...they are the loves of my life. My husband wants a big dog...like a Doberman Pinscher? What the heck??? He has always desired a big dog but indulged my fantasy of having lil bitty lap dogs. Well my fantasy was fulfilled unfortunately my dogs really only love me...the little girl especially hates men, Tucker likes my husband but no real relationship. I LOVE all dogs and I am not opposed to him getting a bigger dog but a Doberman??????? Any one have experience with having a LARGE dog with their own lil bittie's? I am thinking more like a Golden Doodle...no shedding, big but sweet looking. I am just not sure that is what he has in mind. Umm...I am also not sure I could convince him that is what he really wants. I don't think I could do the drooling and shedding thing. |
I grew up with larger dogs. Have no experience with as a yorkie owner and large breed owner. I don't think your hubby would agree that a Golden Doodle is a Man's dog either. If you're considering a large dog that may be good with the yorkies, consider a German Shepard? |
Well not all Golden Doodles don't not shed. Well you can get a standard poodle. Big dog . . no shed. I would go for a medium size dog. Check out the shelters too. Border collies or aussie Shepards are great dogs. They both are sweet, playful and extremely smart. They a easily trainable. |
If your husband wants a dobbie he can have the bastard that lives next door. Whenever it is home alone it barks hours on end and the owner never leashes it and when we walk down our driveway it charges and barks. He just say, "Bailey won't hurt you!" I really despise that dog and I am a big animal lover. I am afraid that it will attack my yorkie and maltese. |
I had a great dane mix and he was AWESOME! We had 3 yorkies back then and he was a big goof ball,a gentle giant :heart79: I dont think there is a more gentle dog than a great dane :) Duke was fantastic with dogs, cats and my kids who were little back then.My yorkies LOVED him to death!! ;) I totally recomend :D I just went through his pics and realised how much I miss him:heart79: http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps465e14ba.jpg He was 8 weeks old in this picture...I think everyone should have a great dane or a great dane mix :) Quote:

I actually have I had a beautiful boy Yorkie name rocks and my husband decided he wanted a real dog too. So we decided to go for it ... We adopted a beautiful all white red nose pit bull ( pit bull I know what were we thinking)... Let me just say I have soooo many great memories with those two ( they both passed away) ... His pit bull named Isis thought she was a small dog so watching those two interact was very interesting... I'm not saying everybody will have the same experience but i can say mines were amazing with each other. |

Oh, I agree, Great Danes are wonderful. I had a beautiful Mantle girl named Molli. I loved that dog. She was such a mother hen. She was not aggressive at all. She used to stand between me and anyone she didn't know. I would love to have another Dane, but my heart was broken when she passed away from bloat. |
I have a golden lab and Aussie/pointer mix, my lab loves little dogs and Aussie ignores them and wants to be by my side. Dobbermans are great dogs just like most dogs need training. If he gets a puppy just keep it separate so he doesn't play to rough with the yorkies. They won't mean harm but puppies don't realize how big they are. My dogs sleep by my bed at night. |
I have a husky with my two yorkies...many people wouldn't think they would mix well because huskies have such a high prey drive...I have two stories with my Nika- the first one cuz its happy...Ruby and Rosie love Niks- She is so gentle with them and would never hurt a flea.. my previous yorkie Lola...also got along really good w Niks- but one day Lola was resource guarding her cheese. Nika was on the bed and jumped down. Lola thought she was going after the cheese and lunged at Nika at the same time Nika jumped down. Lola broke her neck and died instantly. Nika grieved for some time...looking for Lola. It totally was not Nika's fault. If you get a big dog...supervise supervise supervise no matter how gentle the big dog is. |
We have a Bloodhound and one yorkie. The Bloodhound is so loving and laid back. |
We have our Yorkie baby and our old man- a German Shorthair Pointer. Those two are awesome together. It probably helps that our GSP is super laid back and puts up with a lot from the kids and the pup. |
I have Carley, shes a gentle giant, even though shes only 50 lbs, thats 10 times the weight of Joey. She was in the house first though and I knew her personality before I even thought about bringing another dog in (especially a small dog). They get along great, but with any animals, you will have to supervise and just because of the size difference you may have a problem. |

Well, we have Buck (see my avatar) and he does fine with the Yorkies. He was grown when we got him. I found him after he had been hit by a car. He wasn't 100% for quite some time and by then they all had time to get used to each other. It helps that he is very easy-going and laid back, too. I love big dogs, but don't think I would ever have gotten one except for luck. I would worry so much about a large breed puppy not realizing its size, going through a dominance phase and all the things pups do while having Yorkies in the house. It really depends on the dog and the owner. My son has a Pitt and 2 Chihuahua/Dachshund mixes and they get along fine. In his case, they are all girls and are all spayed. It probably helps not to have raging hormones thrown into the mix. That's about the limit of my experience. Good luck in making a decision and factoring in all the variables. |
I miss our GSD, except for the shedding fur and I will never forget the day she came down with diarrhea and ran through the whole house. We were just waking up and I just stood there and cried. It was everywhere! I told DH then, never again, You want a big dog, be ready to do all the cleaning up after it. My 3 Yorkies and my Biewer are just getting over having diarrhea, and all 4 of them together for the past 4 days do not make as big a mess as the GSD did that one time!:D |
I would not recommend a mix because you never know what your going to get. Would he be ok getting an adult so you would know how the dogs get along and skipping the puppy phase where puppies can be rough might be best for small dogs. Whatever you do though its best not to leave big dogs and small dogs alone together. |
Boxers are wonderful dogs with yorkies. My son has a beautiful little girl named Angel now and had one that was the sweetest girl ever named Belle. They both played with my yorkies and were so gentle with them. |

What about a lab or boxer? |
We have an older Wheaten Terrier, while not a large dog in weight(35 lbs), still quite tall and very strong. No shedding but puppies can be very energetic and high energy- they take a lot of training. Lucy was 8 when we bought Ziva home, I don't know if I could have managed the other way . Lucy does take way more grooming, food and clean up than the yorkies, and she never lays on our laps to cuddle! |
Don't you just wanna smack 'em when they make the "real dog" comments? Dobies, trained correctly, are wonderful animals. My uncle had several over the years when I was growing up. His Zeus was super protective over his territory, but if he knew you, he was a total pile of wagginglickingflopoverrubmybellyNOW! goo. |
We have a great dane as well as our yorkie and a cat. They get along great! |
We had a Border Collie with our Yorkies and he did great, always! However, if I had to choose to get a big dog with my little dogs I would want to get an AIREDALE terrier!!! A couple of people in my neighborhood have airedales and they are such interesting and wonderfully delightful dogs. |
I totally understand your ick for shedding and your hubby's desire for a dobermine. I'm considering getting a dobermine as my next personal protection dog but with their ears clipped they do have some ear concerns and not as scary looking without it done. We have both trained rottweiler and boxer for guard protection that stay outdoors. The more socialized and obedient the better. Any breed will obey you if you train them. They are very both very good with the yorky. The yorky has a big dog attitude so not intimidated by the larger breeds. Just have to look out for the yorky if the big dogs start horsing around. A non shedding man dog, perhaps you could look at a black giant schnauzer. They're a working class breed. |
I have a large brown lab and another dog the size of a golden retriever. They are both very good with Chloe. I always stay close just in case and she has her own fenced in area outside to potty so they can't get in there with her. |

Pooky's mom is definitely correct that giant black schnauzers are great working dogs and definitely looks manly/regal but still cute ... Giant Schnauzer's actually do shed, though. Like the Airedale terrier as well .... but those two particular dogs are "low-shedding" dogs because they do not shed as much as, say, a German Shepherd or even other such short hair breeds. However, if you're looking for a dog that doesn't shed as much, I would definitely look into the Giant Schnauzer or the Airedale terrier. Of course, all large dogs (and little) require a lot of training and socialization to be good companions for both yourself and other dogs. The Giant Black Schnauzer is my third choice of large dog that I would choose. My choices being: Airedale terrier, Irish Wolfhound, Giant Schnauzer |
My friend has a Labradoodle, and it sheds soooooooooooooooooooooo much, it's awful!!! She also drools a lot and has big strings hanging from her mouth! I know this, as we have looked after her! Never again! I have Poppy, my lil Chi x Yorkie, and we also have a Staffy, they are very good together most of the time, maybe he would like a Staffy! |

When we got Duke (great dane/Golden retriever mix) Lady (RIP) was 7 years old.She was a 2lb yorkie and he was SO gentle with her, even as a puppy himself. He was the best dog ever and I LOVED how huge and clumbsy he was :2hearts2: I absolytely LOVE danes :2hearts2: |
4 Attachment(s) OMG so Sorry thought I posted this yesterday but DD got here and I got busy. Sorry! First I'd say: He's a guy...all my male friends call big dogs "real dogs" and big trucks are "real trucks"....It's just a guy thing. Sounds to me like he wants a dog to be his buddy too. A doberman is like all other dogs, in the sense that if you raise it right, it's a wonderful loving family pet...treat it wrong and you get what you failed to nurture and train. Does that make sense? There are some breeds that are much more "head strong" than others...some say stubborn and some say take much more training to stay on top of, but he just stays consistent all will be well. I had a doberman that I got as a pup and raised for 4 years before she went to the rainbow bridge, she got Wobblers Disease. She was the sweetest, most loving, loyal, obedient and friendly dog I've ever had!!! I spent a lot of time with her (but had a life too so don't take that wrong please), just was very focused on training and socializing her to be a positive representative for the breed. We had my mother's older 6 lb toy poodle living with us then and she was taught to be very gentle with and she never hurt her. Before my divorce I had a Great Pyrenees, Garrett with the girls for the last 5 years. Here's a few pictures of them. Attachment 381867 Attachment 381865 Attachment 381866 Attachment 381864 |
Lol, your hubby sounds like my dad and brother, when I first got Milo, there was a bunch of jokes. Comments like "what is that?", "Is it a cat?", "Why didn't you get a real dog?". We have always had big dogs in my family, last string of dogs my dad and brother had were all Rotties, my dad had a few dobermans that were trained amazingly well, our best family dog in my opinion was a golden retriever. I would not hesitate to buy a retriever as a family pet when I start my family. |
Oh yes, my DH is a "manly man" too and small dogs, such as Yorkies, are "Muskie bait" to him. I brought Blazer home without his approval. In fact, he strictly forbid it but I did it anyway (I mean really, how could I pass up on a free Yorkie that was a thank you gift?) So, DH wanted NOTHING to do with Blazer and ignored him for a few weeks and always had snide comments for me about how I babied him. I gradually coerced DH into paying attention to Blazer by acting like I didn't know how to train him properly. DH wanted things "done right" so would step in. Also, Blazer and Buddy would play and it was (and is) SOOOO hilarious to watch that you couldn't help but smile. Blazer gradually worked his way into DH's heart and now whenever DH is home (usually only on weekends, he works out of town) they are inseperable. I knew that I'd "won" when DH started telling everyone about how great Blazer is. =D |
