My hubby wants a real dog... I have two little babies Tucker and Lola...they are the loves of my life. My husband wants a big dog...like a Doberman Pinscher? What the heck??? He has always desired a big dog but indulged my fantasy of having lil bitty lap dogs. Well my fantasy was fulfilled unfortunately my dogs really only love me...the little girl especially hates men, Tucker likes my husband but no real relationship. I LOVE all dogs and I am not opposed to him getting a bigger dog but a Doberman??????? Any one have experience with having a LARGE dog with their own lil bittie's? I am thinking more like a Golden Doodle...no shedding, big but sweet looking. I am just not sure that is what he has in mind. Umm...I am also not sure I could convince him that is what he really wants. I don't think I could do the drooling and shedding thing. |
I grew up with larger dogs. Have no experience with as a yorkie owner and large breed owner. I don't think your hubby would agree that a Golden Doodle is a Man's dog either. If you're considering a large dog that may be good with the yorkies, consider a German Shepard? |
Well not all Golden Doodles don't not shed. Well you can get a standard poodle. Big dog . . no shed. I would go for a medium size dog. Check out the shelters too. Border collies or aussie Shepards are great dogs. They both are sweet, playful and extremely smart. They a easily trainable. |
If your husband wants a dobbie he can have the bastard that lives next door. Whenever it is home alone it barks hours on end and the owner never leashes it and when we walk down our driveway it charges and barks. He just say, "Bailey won't hurt you!" I really despise that dog and I am a big animal lover. I am afraid that it will attack my yorkie and maltese. |
I had a great dane mix and he was AWESOME! We had 3 yorkies back then and he was a big goof ball,a gentle giant :heart79: I dont think there is a more gentle dog than a great dane :) Duke was fantastic with dogs, cats and my kids who were little back then.My yorkies LOVED him to death!! ;) I totally recomend :D I just went through his pics and realised how much I miss him:heart79: http://i583.photobucket.com/albums/s...ps465e14ba.jpg He was 8 weeks old in this picture...I think everyone should have a great dane or a great dane mix :) Quote:

I actually have I had a beautiful boy Yorkie name rocks and my husband decided he wanted a real dog too. So we decided to go for it ... We adopted a beautiful all white red nose pit bull ( pit bull I know what were we thinking)... Let me just say I have soooo many great memories with those two ( they both passed away) ... His pit bull named Isis thought she was a small dog so watching those two interact was very interesting... I'm not saying everybody will have the same experience but i can say mines were amazing with each other. |

Oh, I agree, Great Danes are wonderful. I had a beautiful Mantle girl named Molli. I loved that dog. She was such a mother hen. She was not aggressive at all. She used to stand between me and anyone she didn't know. I would love to have another Dane, but my heart was broken when she passed away from bloat. |
I have a golden lab and Aussie/pointer mix, my lab loves little dogs and Aussie ignores them and wants to be by my side. Dobbermans are great dogs just like most dogs need training. If he gets a puppy just keep it separate so he doesn't play to rough with the yorkies. They won't mean harm but puppies don't realize how big they are. My dogs sleep by my bed at night. |
I have a husky with my two yorkies...many people wouldn't think they would mix well because huskies have such a high prey drive...I have two stories with my Nika- the first one cuz its happy...Ruby and Rosie love Niks- She is so gentle with them and would never hurt a flea.. my previous yorkie Lola...also got along really good w Niks- but one day Lola was resource guarding her cheese. Nika was on the bed and jumped down. Lola thought she was going after the cheese and lunged at Nika at the same time Nika jumped down. Lola broke her neck and died instantly. Nika grieved for some time...looking for Lola. It totally was not Nika's fault. If you get a big dog...supervise supervise supervise no matter how gentle the big dog is. |
We have a Bloodhound and one yorkie. The Bloodhound is so loving and laid back. |
We have our Yorkie baby and our old man- a German Shorthair Pointer. Those two are awesome together. It probably helps that our GSP is super laid back and puts up with a lot from the kids and the pup. |
I have Carley, shes a gentle giant, even though shes only 50 lbs, thats 10 times the weight of Joey. She was in the house first though and I knew her personality before I even thought about bringing another dog in (especially a small dog). They get along great, but with any animals, you will have to supervise and just because of the size difference you may have a problem. |

Well, we have Buck (see my avatar) and he does fine with the Yorkies. He was grown when we got him. I found him after he had been hit by a car. He wasn't 100% for quite some time and by then they all had time to get used to each other. It helps that he is very easy-going and laid back, too. I love big dogs, but don't think I would ever have gotten one except for luck. I would worry so much about a large breed puppy not realizing its size, going through a dominance phase and all the things pups do while having Yorkies in the house. It really depends on the dog and the owner. My son has a Pitt and 2 Chihuahua/Dachshund mixes and they get along fine. In his case, they are all girls and are all spayed. It probably helps not to have raging hormones thrown into the mix. That's about the limit of my experience. Good luck in making a decision and factoring in all the variables. |
I miss our GSD, except for the shedding fur and I will never forget the day she came down with diarrhea and ran through the whole house. We were just waking up and I just stood there and cried. It was everywhere! I told DH then, never again, You want a big dog, be ready to do all the cleaning up after it. My 3 Yorkies and my Biewer are just getting over having diarrhea, and all 4 of them together for the past 4 days do not make as big a mess as the GSD did that one time!:D |
