Hi-Introducing Myself! Hi Everyone - I have been coming to Yorkie Talk for a number of years for advice and thought that the time has come to become an active member. I really value this forum as a place to go for advice. A little about myself - I have been a yorkie mama for about 9 years. My husband and myself are also great German Shepherd Lovers and about 11 years ago we purchased a purebred show quality German Shepherd and she was the love of our entire family and neighborhood. Our Shepherd bonded with my husband and went everywhere with him (including work everyday). I wanted my own "lap dog" and our vet recommended a Yorkie because of their big dog personality and she felt that this little bundle would fit in with our Shepherd. So about 9 years ago I brought Cosmo home. He is a 6 1/2 lb traditional yorkie that took over our hearts and our home. We bred and raised shepherd pups but after 6 years we lost our shepherd to a stroke and it broke our hearts - but Cosmo was their and he was a great help in our therapy - even though he also had lost a good friend. After a bit of time we brought another Show quality Shepherd but to after a couple of years we lost her to a very rare seizure problem. We were heartbroken and so was Cosmo - SO that is how we brought Zoey into our home. Cosmo was so lost without a friend at home and we were to heartbroken to bring another Shepherd home at that time so I decided to get Cosmo a little girl yorkie as a companion. So 2 years ago I went back to the same breeder that I got Cosmo from - because I so loved everything about him - and came home with my little girl Zoey. She was a hit from the start. While there to pick up Zoey when we were bringing her home - our breeder was starting to breed both the traditional and the parti yorkies. She had a little boy there that was just a peanut and walked right up to my husband and he fell in love. I informed them that we already had our boy and our breeded said that she was going to keep this little boy with her as a stud. My husband said that if she decided to not keep him to call us first. Well we went home and for a few weeks and the telephone rang and it was the breeder that had decided to not keep the litter after all- due to some family issues - and said that she was giving up first choice on our Reno. I said that we were happy with our two but my husband wanted to go and look and I knew....... Anyway when we went - here was this tiny little parti yorkie and my husband was in love. She was asking top dollar because of his coloring, size, personality, etc and I told her that I didn't think we could afford a 3rd dog so soon. She suggested to me - since I bred German Shepherds, why didn't I try my hand at breeding the yorkie and that Reno was of no relation to Zoey by girl. Anyway after much consideration that is what I thought we might do and we came home with Reno. He is a parti color little stud and is now almost two years old and weighs in at a bit 2 lbs 6 ozs. Talk about a little peanut with a big personality. But we were in love. I mentioned to the breeder that if I was going to try my hand at this that if she ever had a great coloring parti female of no relation to my Reno to give me a call. She did after about a year and now we have Kyra also. She is my parti female and she didn't get as big as I was hoping (5 lbs) to bred - she is currently 3 lbs 1 oz at a little over a year. She has a personality and looks like she is smiling all the time. Her coat is the thickest coat I have ever seen on a yorkie. I recently took them all to the vet for shots, check-ups and I was afraid that breeding her at around 3 1/2 pounds would be to small but our vet thinks it would be fine because our male is only 2.6 lbs. I have waited the two years to make sure that my dogs have the maturity level and to make sure that there are no health issues so I just bred Zoey and Reno together. This Friday Zoey will go in for an ultrasound since this will be my first "little" dog whelping and I am a little nervous about the delicate nature of these small pups. But it is exciting at our house. I told my kids that the size of our dogs full grown are the size of our Shepherd pups when we were breeding them. So - besides my 6 kids and 3 grandkids - that is our family. With the new pups coming I am hoping that I will be able to get advice from all of you out there. I so love this bred of dog and my biggest fear and that of not being able to adopt the pups out and wanting to keep them ourselves - but I told the kids we are going to be strong. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to join this community. |
Hi and welcome to YT! I'm so glad you joined as well! You have a great story and I wish you all the luck in the world with your new venture. There is a specific section for Breeders to share information but I am too new here to be able to offer to move this to that section. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I have will be able to held and advise you! Good luck on the impending birth and again welcome!! |
Your vet is wrong. Experts in Yorkies say it is extremely dangerous to breed under 5 pounds dogs and say its unethical. She has a very high chance of dying as well as needing a c-section and there are a lot of cases where when the c-section is done the mother will not except them which means you will have to bottle feed them very often. Please please do not breed you tiny girl again. |
Hello and welcome...I hope all goes well for mommy and pups. Keep us posted. Again Welcome! |
No Words. |
Hello and welcome to YT! Great story and I love both the traditional and parti Yorkie - as you can see in my avatar. Definitely check out the breeding section here as there is a ton of information there. I wish you and your little girl a successful and healthy pregnancy and welp. We would love to see pictures of your fur babies and please keep us informed of your little one's pregnancy/welp. |

Does your vet have any experience with small dogs? They're different than big dogs. I'm assuming you've been going to your current vet for a while since you've had GSDs for quite a few years. However, I'm glad to hear that you're not breeding them because they're small (there are so many "greeders" out there that will only breed tinies because they're small) and that this was just a lack of small dog knowledge. Please stay here and check out the breeder section stickies and keep us updated! |
Welcome to YT! There is lots of great stuff to read and learn here. Parti yorkies are super cute but they are not the breed standard, actually they should be sold for less because they cannot be shown in the ring but people sell them for more because they call them "rare". I've got a cople off color yorkies myself and love them dearly but they should really be sold as pets only. Good luck, I hope your tiny girl makes it through this. |
I am a breeder with some experience in toy breeds and I would NEVER, and I Mean NEVER would breed a girl less than 5 pounds. you are looking for a horrible tragedy, the size of the parents is only PART of the equation, the size of the pelvic bone is what matters and is been proved that the majority of dogs under 5 pounds need a C section , or wound up in trouble during whelping.. so if you breed her May God watch over her, because I would never recomend that.. best of luck to you. hugs, |
Welcome to YT. I wish your little Kyra the best but it breaks my heart that she is going to be a mama I have a 2.8 lb Kyra and I would never ever think of risking her life like this. I will be praying for your little girl. |

Welcome! I am in love with this site! It is so nice to know that there are other yorkie lovers to talk and chat about our babies! |
welcome to yt. i hope all goes well with the whelping. please keep us posted. please also understand that there are many on here who's main concern is the welfare of the momma and her safety. please read over the breeders sections as there is a wealth of information that could be helpful if you havent already. |
Am glad you finally decided to join us here instead of lurking. :p Anyway, I'm sorry you bred that tiny 3 pound girl. That is too small, regardless of what a Vet. said. Fact is I would be finding me a different Vet. if one ever said that to me. Your girl could die, along with any pups and I hope when she starts to whelp, you take her to the hospital. It will be very critical for her and the pups. It's my guess you bred her only to make money, since you had already told the breeder that you couldn't afford a third one so soon. Seems she talked you into breeding for money and that is so very, very wrong. If your girl survives this, please have her spayed, and have the boy neutered. They should have been pets only in the first place. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Many of us have joined YT after we made the mistake of buying a puppy mill pup or some other awful thing. We didn't know any better. The longer you are on YT the more you learn We will be here to help if we can. We are not beating you up, we are trying to share what we know. YT has a wonderful amount of information. Read the Breeders section threads. Now my advice is: #1. You have already bred your Yorkies so that is that. #2. Experienced Yorkie Breeders would say bitches under 5 pounds should not be bred. It is too risky. So next time you will know better. #3. I used to breed and train Labs. Belive me when I say it is nothing like breeding toy dogs. #4. Try to find a local breeder of Yorkies that will help you during labor and delivery. #5. Ask local Yorkie breeder what Vet they use. It is a matter of life and death to have a Vet that really knows about small toy breeds. That is my advice. Again, Welcome to YT. |
Hi & welcome to YT :) |
It was your better judgement that told you not to breed her before your idiotic vet stepped in and said it was okay. She will need a c section and she may not survive it. Heck on here right now is a yorkie that didnt survive a spaY SUrgery just didnt wake up and she was a standard sized yorkie. I also dont think too much of your breeder. Breeding to recoup money spent on yorkies isnt a good reason to breed. Have you done any research? Have a mentor?Willing to do health tests on your dogs to make sure they arent passing on any congenital disorders? There is alot to do to prepare to be a breeder unless you want to be another back yard breeder thats just in it for the money and be damned the consecences |
Hi everyone...I am new here and before everyone continues...I just want to clear something up. My baby that is expecting is NOT my 3 lb female but my standard 5 lb 1 oz baby that is 2 years old. My zoey has had numerous health checks done as well as all my other dogs. I am not a back yard breeder, as someone indicated...I have done tons of research and the last year have spent dozens of hours with another breeder who has bred for years, helping with the birth of 2 different litters and going over to the breeders home everyday for 6 weeks to watch and learn about the progress and growth patterns of the pups. I than went to her home a couple of days a week to watch and learn the progress of the pups from the 6 to 12 weeks and sat and listened to the adopted parents as she interviewed them as a potential home for the pups. I am investing 200 dollars this week on an ultrasound for my baby to confirm how many pups she is having and to make sure that everything looks good for zoey. When I was breeding my show standard shepherds we had an investment of thousands of dollars before I even had the first litter. We paid three thousand dollars for one of our shepherds for breeding rights to only have her spayed when she was 6 months old because she was not perfect according to the shepherd standards for breeding. I have made the same commitment with my yorkies. I did not breed zoey to make money.....I bred her because she is of excellent standard and personality and I want the pups future parents to have the years of joy that my animals have given my family. I don't want to get defensive but I also want people to understand that 5 minutes of reading someone's story does not fully tell you who someone is. I have spent hundreds of hours the last two years reading, researching, training and preparing myself for taking on this challenge. I will do everything and spend whatever it takes to make sure that my zoey is healthy and is safe. I have saved all of my vacation from work the last two years just so that I can be here and be a full time nanny for my zoey and stay home with her for a month once her pups come. I hope to learn a lot from all of you "experts" out there. Just remember that everyone has to start somewhere but people who "know" me will say that when I decide to do something...I will do everything within my power to make sure that it is done to the best of my ability. Thank you to all of you for your advice that I have received so far. I am hoping to receive a lot more as the next few weeks go by. Have a great evening and Happy Valentine's Day! God Bless |
DianeSch- I am not a breeder, nor (to my embarrassment now) did I get my pup from a reputable breeder (pup was free from a friend). When I read your 1st post, like others I got the impression you were breeding the tiny. I'm glad I was mistaken. IMO, you are doing your homework and it sounds like you have a mentor that can help with the whelping. I understand (NOW) that breeders are in it to better the breed, not make $, and it sounds like you already understand that concept from breeding the shepards. Good luck and I hope that all goes well. Please keep us updated. Everyone on this site is all about the dogs, so I'm glad to see you didn't take anything said personally. Everyone on this site wants to better the breed and sometimes they-we-can be quite blunt in our opinions. It sounds like you are doing it right, to me. We love photos and hearing about each others trials, tribulations and joys of yorkie ownership (indebted servitude?-us to them, not the other way around). Keep us informed in the progress of the pregnancy. I am interested in how it goes for you, 1st time time little dog whelping. :D:D |
Wahoo ! Glad you are doing things right. Again I say Welcome to YT. And I would love to see pics. Preg. Mommies are cute too ! |
Hello and welcome to YT. It is wonderful that you have done your research and have a mentor. I can not wait to see pics of your whole pack |
WOW what a story and welcome. |
I am sorry I misread your first post and thought you were going to breed your Kyra because the vet said it was ok. I am glad you are being diligent and doing what you can to be a good breeder. Hopefully your breeder advised you to have both dogs tested before breeding also and you have researched their lines for genetic defects. Best of luck with the babies. |
First, I want to say that I'm glad you posted a follow up, because I read it as you bred your tiny, too (you said your vet thought it was ok since the male was small..this is how I read it..and how most read it, apparently). If you bread your 5lb girl, then *whew* ;) With that said, Welcome to YT!! Got some pics off all your pups? Would love to see them!! |
Just want to say WELCOME! I don't breed, just love my Cali. I only got Cali because the breeder who was showing her felt she " might not make weight" , which I later learned from my YT friend meant she was not going to get to the required 5 lbs -- and she didn't so now she is the center of my life:D Best wishes to you as you take care of your little mother and pups! We love pictures :D |
Looks like 5 pups Hi again - thank you everyone for your words of encouragement and for not being clear in my first post - but with that behind us.....I told Zoey to the vey yesterday for an ultrasound we are about 95% sure there are 5 pups - My vet said 4-5 on her records but we looked together at the ultrasound for around 45 minutes or so and I would bet the farm on it - there was a 5th. The big question became - right up by her rib cage - one of the pups were lying with its side to us and when it moved - just for a second the vet and I thought we saw another sac behind it. By the time you get 5 pups in there - it was pretty full. My vet is going to come to the house when Zoey is having her pups to check her and make sure things are going alright. We don't want to move her unless there was an emergency c-section so that we don't stress the little mama. Her delivery window in that end of February/beginning of March. I witness the coupling on both the 1st and 3rd of January. I will post some pictures soon - my kids broke my camera last week so I have to get to the store and purchase another one. Thanks for all you words of advice - everyone. Have a great weekend. |
