Anyone takes their yorkie running? I know this is not a running dog, but does anyone take their dog running for short distances? Dex is 3 months old and definitely too little for that, although we do run a little bit with him. When we bought him the breeder said we can take him running for a mile or so long runs when he grows up. |
We uses to take Wylie running with us when he was younger...probably about 20mins-1/2 hour - and omg, he LOVED it. He just had a blast. I know there are other folks on here who take their yorkies running too. As long as their knees check out okay, they should do great. I'd probably work them up to your goal time slowly, though. |
When I take Tonak for his walk... He runs! And it started to be at a speed where I would have to jog beside him, but now I have to full out run! He slows only to turn his head and make sure I am still there! He is only on a 6ft leash, so I have no choice! He is not running after anything, or chasing anything, he just loves running!! This started from he was 4.5 months. (we started regular walks at 4 months after all his shots) he goes for anywhere between 20 - 40 min at a time. The length of time will depend on whether he goes to sleep as soon as we get home, or if he plays for 10 min first! |
Great! Thank you for the info :) Can't wait 'til its nice out and we can take him for longer jogs! |
My bf is soo excited to take her running with him. So what age should I make him wait until |
I used to take Peanut running, I would roller-blade and he would run next to me. When he got tired I would carry him LOL He loved the ride! Now he is LP, so we can't enjoy that anymore- Just long walks! |
You can not start any Dog out too young, or too old ! IF you're interested in their health, then, let them set the pace. When they're very young or old, run as far as they want, then walk for a while, usually back toward the house. But, after they reach 9 months to a year, then you can push them some. Trust me, they can take it, and it profoundly effects their physical status in a positive direction, and the stamina you are creating, will hang with them the rest of their lives. That approach is somewhat like Progressive Resistance Exercising. |
We take chachi our bigger yorkie running he loves it and can keep up. Jewels our 8lb yorkie gets wore out from walking so we dont run her |

I can't get my two to walk in a forward direction, much less run. :-( |

My Female Becca and Male Puppy Ichabod get tired quicker than My Male Sneakers. I just do a figure 8 on the route, drop Becca and Ickey off, and continue with Sneakers. This way everybody gets good exercise. It's funny though, Becca and Ickey don't like to be left behind, but, one must make those evaluations. Running together like that, is a very powerful tool promoting Pack cohesiveness. |
I take mine, but not very often. He loves it! I let him set the pace, which is a comfortable trot for him, and a slow jog for me. When he gets tired, I carry him. It's not often though, he'd much rather be on the ground exploring everything. |

My teddy loves to go for fast walks/jogs. He is only 3lbs and it amazes me how fast his little legs go. I go at a easy jog and it is for 1-3 miles. I don't take him on my long runs |

Sounds like something I should do. I actually need the exercise too!! LOL |

When Becca wants to be carried, SO does Ickey. He thinks he should be first and foremost with everything (typical Puppy). Try handling THREE of those Retractable Leashes and two Dogs in your arms, while you have a 13 lb terror (Sneakers), running back and forth, trying to sniff of every bush in the neighborhood. As you, anything they want, they got it ! |

Oh, and no, I do not run with Brody and/or Mia. lol |
Our yorkie Quila liked to run at a young age. I do not like to run. So I bought a bicycle and taught her to run beside me on a leash at about 6 months. Now it is her favorite thing. Last summer we ran over 600 kms according to my Iphone. She weighs 10.5 pounds and is very lean though. Her legs are not stubby. She will easily go 7-8 kms. I NEVER pull her....she is ALWAYS ahead of my bike. I have no idea what her limit would be....our record is 11 kms in a run and she still comes home and plays. It is excellent exercise for BOTH of us! |
I watch these marathon runners in Houston, practicing running around the Medical Center....I have seen them forget all about the poor little Yorkie they are dragging along on a leash behind them, at all hours of the day, regardless of the heat and humidity....all fit and trim and glowing with sweat, while that poor little dog is stumbling, running as best it can, tongue lolled out, ears hanging sideways, barely able to even hold its head up, little paws burning from running on the concrete sidewalk in 96-104 degree weather.....I have actually stopped twice and pointed out that their little dog was about to die, as they drug it along behind them....they were all into their training and plum forgot that babys legs are about 4-5 inches long, and they can NOT run a 6 minute mile, or 7 miles in an hour, in the heat of the day, in 70% humidity. Please just remember you have a little dog at the end of that leash...let the little dog set the pace for your "run"...these are NOT labradors or german shepherds....if you are not getting enough out of the "Yorkie run", then add additional running times to YOUR training schedule, while your baby is "recouperating" at home! |
Bella loves to power walk and jog. I let her set the pace, which kills me. LOL When she's ready to walk, we walk. I love it. Have fun. |

 Probably a good thing you did! OMG...I know people are stupid, but how could you forget you brought your Yorkie 'drag racing' with you!!!:( I do not allow my (small) babies to walk on pavement, hot or otherwise...never on a street or parking lot, rarely on a sidewalk, and only very occasionally do they set foot on 'other people's grass'...lol. Mine 'expect to' and get 'carried' to and from everywhere. I'm weird...I know! ;):p:D |
