Dogs can handle certain bacteria's that we can't and they need to be able too or they will have such low immune systems. I will keep giving them to Callie. I would rather give her more exercise then not let her do something she enjoys and that cleans her teeth (bully sticks and weekly brushing made her not need a dental for 5 years even then she didn't need one but had to have a tooth fixed). Antlers will break teeth so those are the things to really watch out for in my opinion. There will always be a bad side to everything you have to look at both sides and make your own opinion nothing will ever be perfect.

Out of 26 sticks tested they found 3 with possible bacteria. The article does not state what companies had contamination.

They were talking about a dog consuming a 6" stick per day. Bully sticks are not supposed to be treats for dogs to eat. They are for chewing and people should buy them large enough that the dog does not consume as though it was food.

There seems to me some misleading information in the article. Bully sticks are less than 1% fat.

There are some bad companies out there producing bully sticks and other pet treats. I would rather pay more than buy a product that has not been processed properly.

Gracie is a 5lb dog. I buy her 12" sticks so that she actually chews and does not eat the stick as this article is talking about. He 12" stick lasts at least 2 weeks and neither she nor we have ever had problems with them.

Bully sticks are fatty and greasy. Great article and well respected vets at Tufts.

Not true that dogs can handle bacteria we can't. They get sick from and indeed die from some of the same pathogenic microbes humans do.

Wow, is anything safe for yorkies to chew. I don't give them raw hide, Greenies or bones, so what is left? They don't actively chew on the non-food dog toys. Any one have ideas that could be purchased at PetSmart or PetCo? I need to find something that is safe for my dogs teeth! I don't like to order online.

Dog's guts are made to digest raw foods. They have eaten it for centuries.
Bully sticks are made of dried bull penis. That part of the anatomy does not contain fat. Most dog foods contains the same part of the body. Dog food is not made of choice cuts of meat.

So are you saying they are safe? Teeka has had no issues with bully sticks. She only gets them for a limited amount of time and maybe once or twice a day. Depending on how vocal her demand is!!!! I know she hasn't gained any weight because she still weights 3.6 lbs.

I bought Gracie a couple of different bully sticks at local stores. The Red Barn brand was very soft and she had a slight case of diarrhea from it. I don't remember the other brand I bought but it was also too soft although she did not have any reaction to it.

Several people here, including myself, buy them from Best Bully . com and have had good results. They are very hard and the dog cannot eat them like a treat. As I said I get her a 12" stick that is bigger than she is. It lasts for weeks. She may chew on it one day and not the next. It takes quite a bit of work for her to even soften the end but she loves chewing them.

I really think some companies purposely process the sticks wrong so they are too soft and the dogs will consume them as treats instead of their being used as a chew.

I would not recommend any brand other than Best Bully. There are just too many companies out here that are trying to make a fast buck at the expense of our pets.

My vet made me stop Bullysticks as soon as I transferred to him, Paragon vegtable dog chews is what he has me give mine but they don't last long lol

I really think they help. Minnie Mia will be 3 in March. Her teeth are really white and clean. Rily will soon be four. He is getting his first dental next week, but honestly his teeth don't look real bad, just his back molars. Saydee has a small mouth and an underbite, so her teeth are harder to brush, plus she doesn't chew as much. She had to have a dental last year at age 2 1/2. That's when I started giving them the C.E.T. chews.
