Good Companion Breed? My wife and I are looking into getting our little Benny a sister. We were heavily leaning toward a Dachshund but I'm reading up and it seems they can be really mean to strangers. Now I'm thinking about a small Old English Bulldog. Any suggestions? And please no, "Get another Yorkie!!!" lol. We're looking for a little diversity. |
We have had 2 dachshunds in our lifetime. Sweet as could be to us but aggressive to strangers and both very hard to housebreak. I have never had one around my yorkies though so no help there sorry. |
If u like bulldogs maybe a french bulldog?? Much smaller than old english bulldogs. English bulldogs are another choice much smaller than old english bulldog. The majority of old english bulldogs i have met at the vet clinic have also been very stand offish to strangers. However french bulldogs are usually very very friendly. Pugs also if you like the smoosh faced breeds. :) If i was worried abt agreasive dachshunds i would stay away from old english bulldogs personally. I have met alot of nice dachshunds and a handfull of naughty ones I will stop now, lol, i could go on and on:) there are soo many breeds i love and have done way too much research. Too much time on my hands. Also being a groomer and vet tech i have ran into sooo many breeds. I love giving people advice when they are searching for a new dog. Hav fun in your search |
How about a Boston Terrier? I have heard great things about them and they look so cute with their little "tuxedos." I have two yorkies, so no help there. But the Boston are supposed to be very friendly and loyal and they are relatively small. |
I have a maltese and he gets along really well with my yorkies. He's very friendly and affectionate. I love the maltese and yorkie breeds, hands down! |
Are you wanting a larger dog or a small dog or does it matter? I think Shelties and/or Collies are good with Yorkies, but some tend to think herding dogs could hurt them by trying to herd them. I think a Golden is the "always the right choice" choice. And on a smaller end, I'd say maybe a shih tzu or a pomeranian. |
So many to choose from! Shih Tzus are very sweet dogs. Pugs if you like the weird breathing sounds. Bostons are very cool. Westie? But I wouldn't say they are the most cooperative. Cavaliers are about the nicest dogs out there. PBGV ;) - I only mention this breed bc we believe our pup is at least part and he is very good with the yorkie that has Queen Syndrome.:rolleyes: Not a breed for most though. Frenchie? Norfolk? |

Thanks all for the advice. A lot to think about. I do need another small breed good for an apartment. I read that English bulldogs were very docile and friendly but maybe I got bad info. My Yorkie always gets along great with Dachshunds at dog parks but their attitude towards people I've been reading about concerns me. TBH while I'm a full blown Yorkie lover now, it was my wife's choice to get one and I was reluctant at the time. So now it's my choice. I don't want to get another "girly" dog breed like a Maltese or a Poodle (even though we're getting a female). Originally I wanted a mini Schnauzer but for whatever reason she's not a fan. I also like Scottish terriers, Carin terriers - most terriers in fact. A Westie might be cool. Jack Russells seem kind of mean to me and are always bullying my Yorkie at dog parks. |
I would have to speak up for the Mini Schnauzer. We have had two, they want to be where you are so they make great companion dogs, they can be thought to bark less, they are fast learners and only want to please their masters. You can teach them things throughout their lives and they have basically two speeds, running and sleeping (unless you get a couch potato like our Hansel). They are happy dogs, get along well with all other animals and are loyal. Just my two cents!! |
My 11 year old poodle and my 7 month old yorkie has became the best of friends. I would also say if we added another dog to our bunch it would either be poodle or yorkie. I adore French Bulldogs. I have NEVER met one I didn't like.(But my husband doesn't do well with the pointy hair in the furniture, carpets, or bed. I would say Westie or Golden are always a safe choice. However, I don't think I would own one. ;) no reason just prob wouldn't. Mix breed dogs usually have less health problems... With that being said I 'like' breeds. |

Most Terrier breeds want to be the boss, so be careful try to match a leader with a follower. Dachs are usually friendly if raised with another breed. They are barkers too so apartment QUIET training, at a early age is a must. I have several friends that have chihuahua and yorkies, poodles and yorkies and even Poms and Yorkies. So personality is more important than breed. JMO :) |
I had two poodles with my two Yorkies and they got along real well. Poodles are very lovable dogs and if you don't mind the grooming, they do not shed or smell. They get along well with other dogs. I would get another poodle now but I have two Yorkies and JoJo is a handful so husband said no more dogs. |
I love my mini schnauzer, he is 11 years old now, always wanting to please, very clean and he does not shed. Scooter is not sure how to take his new yorkie brother though - we are still working on that one :rolleyes: |
