Treats

What are the best treats for a yorkie pup? I'm not sure which ones are good for them...all of them just say they are for dogs. Is there not a specific type that are specifically made for puppies just like it is for regular dog food?

I found puppy treats at petco/petsmart. If you ask a sales assistant they more often than not can show you where the puppy treats are. Just make sure the treats you are buying are made in the U.S. There is also a dog bakery in my neighborhood that makes treats special for people, and I just let them know I'm buying treats for a little puppy and they are accommodating. Perhaps call a local pet bakery?

ALSO many vet offices in my area sell "healthy" treats for puppies and dogs ... Perhaps call your local vet and ask them if they sell treats for puppies because I know mine does.

I only use a few different types of treats. It's SO hard to find trustworthy companies that produce treats.

Cloud Star Buddy Biscuits are our #1. They are the soft kind that look like little gingerbread men. They have many different flavors, and now even grain-free. They are low in fat and very easy to break up! We love them.

We use Bravo! treats for agility training. They are already made tiny, and 100% meat, low in fat, etc.

Mini Naturals - Healthy Moist Miniature Dog Treats

My personal experience is good with Zukes. Blue buffalo also makes some treats. If you are looking for chews, try antlers. They are all natural.

Whatever treats you buy, please do some research for the recall and the protein levels. There are many threads on YT related to food/treat recalls.

From what I can remember, these are absolutely NOTs,
1. Waggin train and canyon creek jerky
2. Purina
3. Greenies
4. Milos kitchen chickey jerky

I use Honey Nut Cheerios seems like she chokes on everything else.

For a tiny puppy Cheerios are a great treat. Because I have several dogs I use the treats made by Blue Buffalo,I just break them into tiny bites and only give a very little bit. I also bake my own,there are some good recipes out there. I have the cookbook put out by 3 Dog Bakery,but there are several recipes in it that I would not use.

We use Cheerios and Gerber's Graduates Puffs (human toddler food). I've about lost faith in dog food companies. The above listed treats are not very filling, so good for training purposes. Also mine love bits of fresh apples, baby carrots, green beans. No grapes or raisins: these are toxic to dogs.

WOW, Cheerios is Bella's favorite. But I am going to give the Gerber Graduate Puffs a try. I am afraid of the store bought "treats". She also likes grated carrots.

This thing with treats....all KINDS of treats....has been going on for YEARS!!! I cant remember when the FIRST crisis arose with dogs dying from liver/kidney failure....??? 2000 ~ 2002 ???...my best friend lost 5 dogs to liver disease, they were all getting those chicken jerky planks....she had been giving them for years....I think nationally, chit hit the fan around 2002??? Anyway, this has been a continal battle with these treats from China, since then.....I am a HUGE advocate of giving my own babies treats that only I would give myself or one of my children, if I had any small children!!.....animal crackers, vanilla wafers, graham crackers, froot loops,honey nut cheerios, cheddar fishes, for meat treats I give chicken toddler vienna suasage (Gerber puts those vienna sausage looking things for toddlers, healthier than actual vienna sausage), canned salmon, green beans, diced cooked carrots, cottage cheese, grated cheddar cheese, and then I got my dehydrator and make all my own chicken and beef jerky. Now I know people are looking at this list of stuff and having seizure activity over "OMG!!! SODIUM content!!!!" Please remember, these are all TREATS that I give....they just get several small bites of a particular item, not a dinner plate full! They do not exist on these treats, these are just for doing special little things, being super good at the vet, or just standing around with those adorable eyes, looking precious!!! The largest quantity given as a treat would be the cottage cheese, and they get a tablspoon maybe once a week.... All the veggies are either canned low sodium or flash frozen veggies....they are not getting overdosed on sodium and they certainly will NOT be getting liver disease or kidney failure from these treats.... There are those of you that homecook/home bake treats for your babies...if I home baked dog treats, that would be the ONLY dog treats/bisquits etc that I would give....they have those tables of baked goods out in PetCo.....I do not know WHO made that stuff and I do not know what is ACTUALLY in all that stuff....I wouldnt give it to one of my children, so I wouldnt give it to one of my dogs. There is absolutely NO REASON for anyone to be buying treats at pet stores....WHY RISK IT?????

Thanks so much for the many ideas for treats. I found out that my girls go crazy of bits of honey crisp apples. And for some reason its only that flavor...they do a jiggy dance when they see/smell me cutting up one for myself knowing they are going to get a bit themselves!!!

I agree with I wouldnt give the dogs something I wouldn't eat(Thats why I don't do raw... I usually don't eat as much when I even cook for myself - GROSS FACTOR). I never thought about the toddle puffs. I am going to give it a try,
