What's the general consensus on bullysticks? Hi there, Knowing that raw hides are not a safe choice, I was wondering if bully sticks are a safe alternative? If not, what do you all give your dogs to chew? Thanks for your input |
Bully sticks are 100% digestible but they still need to have an eye kept on them when they are chewing I think they are great. I would only buy a few to start and see if it agrees with your babies tummy. I get mine from bestbullysticks.com. |
I like them because they seem to last forever. Some of the babies have tummy upsets with them. Some people hate them so it usually is a try and see if it works for you. I never leave mine unattended with anything they chew on unless it is a stuffed toy or something like that. |
Oh yes. My pups are always under supervision while being given anything to chew. ;) Thanks for the replies :D |
agreed. i never leave mine unattended. toss when they get about 2 to 3 inches...and if they get soft with too much length while being chewed on i cut it off. i order mine from best bully sticks and so far have not had any issues. |
Max and Teeka love bully sticks! Teeka is 6 months and loves to chew on them. They have had no tummy upsets and really don't have much of an odor. I buy the bigger, thick ones as they last longer. Other than toys, It is now the only chew, they get! |
I've been buying the 12" ones from best bully sticks that are a little thicker than the regular ones. I like the longer/thicker ones because they do seem to last a little longer and since I throw away the last 2-3 inches I get more for my money. One of mine is an agressive chewer and can go through one pretty quick, so I set the timer and let mine chew for 15-20 minutes a day. My Moka will be 7 this year, and Mylee will be 4. Neither one of mine have yet to need a dental and I do credit the bully sticks for their healthy teeth and gums. My vet always comments on how amazed he is that my girls' teeth look so good. However, as others have said, I always supervise with them. |
My guy loves them so I buy 50 at a time. If you even say bully stick he goes crazy and runs to the cabinet where they are kept and starts jumping up and down. |
I bought one for Oscar. He loved it but it did not agree with him, made him very sick... He has a very sensitive tummy.. |
Part of the reason I limit the time with mine is because also because of tummy upset, but just a few minutes each time doesn't seem to bother them. Just a thought for those that get tummy upset easily. |
My boys LOVE them, to me, they stink and are expensive, but I know they are digestible unlike rawhide and they keep my boys entertained on their own so I can do housework or work work from home for a couple hours without tripping over them at my feet or whining for me to pick them up! So.. me... I LOVE THEM!!! LOL |
Bailey prefers antlers. Some say they hurt teeth. So far Bailey loves them. I believe there are varying degrees of hardness. The antlers are shed so it's pretty natural and it sure saved our home from being eaten alive while Bailey was in his "informative" years. |
Yogi LOVES them and has stopped chewing the walls!! |
Amy loves them with Himalayn (sorry can't spell it) a close second. Started out with the 6 inch ones but have graduated to the 12 inch ones. Do buy the odorless ones. |

My pups will never have bully sticks. My vet is totally against them. They can cause GI upsets, choking and obstructions. Anything I need to sit and watch as closely as others do is just not something I want for my pups. One accident could be the last one. :( My pups get Nylabones and the ones who are chewers love them. I get the Dura Hard ones. I am afraid of any chew that is digestible. |

Mine love bully sticks! I use a king toy to stick them in so there isn't a choking risk. But, I still beer leave them unattended with one! |
I wish I could give them to my two but my little guy had problems digesting them. His poop looked like it had a wire in it. I took them away and gave them durahard chews and deer antlers and he hasn't had any problems since. He's very small so maybe that was the reason he had problems. I have drywall chewers too. They chewed right down to the corner metal. I'm glad to hear my two little angels aren't the only ones with that habit. LOL! I'm hoping they outgrow it soon! |
My two love bullysticks. I only let them have them when I am home to supervise. Hard to miss, since they like for me to hold them for them to chew. Max lies on my arm and "holds" my hand still with his paws. Abby likes for me to run some hot water over the end of the bullystick to get it started so to speak. She is smaller (just over 5 pounds) so sometimes the twists (three braided together) are a little to big for her mouth. I also get mine from Bestbullysticks.com - they are all natural and made in the USA. |

Moki loves them. Usa made only and I have to be there. Helps with keeping his teeth clean |
I just can't bring myself to buying bully sticks for my pups. I think they are disgusting. |

I'm sold on the bully sticks. My girl was a destructive chewer and a terribly sneaky thief before I started buying them. She would steal things out of closets and off of the end tables, out of purses, just about anything she could get her teeth on. I knew better than to give her rawhide but didn't know what other choices were. Since she has had them she has stopped stealing and destroying things. I do have a concern with some of the companies that make them though. Some of the sticks being sold are just too soft and the dog ends up actually eating the stick. That is not the purpose of a chew stick and it can make some dogs sick. Gracie is a 5 pounder and I buy her the regular thickness 12" bully sticks. They are as big as she is but she doesn't mind a bit. They are hard enough that she cannot bite a piece off. She can just soften the end and it takes her quite a bit of chewing to do that. I get the sticks from Best Bully. The other brands that I have tried were just too soft and she actually got diarrhea from the Red Barn brand. |
Just got a box of bestbully sticks today and Amy was jumping around thinking she was going to get all of them. She loves them. |
