Male or Female? Hello Yorkie Lovers :), I just wanted to ask for some feedback on male and female Yorkies. As a few of you may know, I do not have one, but am in the process of researching what exactly I would like but now the topic of gender has come up. Any feedback on the temperament, behaviour, needs or challenges of either gender or if it really makes a difference? Ive read in a few places that gender should NOT make a difference in price, is this true? Thanks for your help, I look forward to and really appreciate your feedback! :) :):aimeeyork |
I think gender does not make any difference, especially if you want pup as PET only. If you want to get into serious breeding, then you can think of getting a female from a reputable breeder. You have to find the right breeder first. Females are priced more than males, but I could not find any valid explanation for this. May be this is the way they prefer ;) I have male Yorkie, although he came from a back yard breeder, he has a good temperament. I am in process of getting a Biewer baby (male) from one of the reputed breeder. There are many knowledgeable people here who will be able to give you more advice. But please try finding the right breeder. Do NOT fall for back yard breeders or pet stores or puppy mills. I saw that you are from Surrey, is it Surrey BC or Surrey UK!! |
I think female Yorkies tend to be priced higher, if I recall correctly when I was looking for a puppy. Neutering is less expensive than spaying too. As for the rest, it is up to the individual pup. There is a wide range of experience here with both females and males. Our breeder told us that her males tend to be more affectionate (and my boys are very lovey), but there are many people here with affectionate girls too. You can't go wrong with either sex. :) |
With terriers, both sexes usually have lots of spunk and attitude though are the best of the lap dogs too. Some people really fear the tendency that some males, even neutered ones, might have to "marking" & I count myself among them. I cannot abide the smell of pee in the house so in 2008 when I came home with a 9 mo. old male, I was terrified at what I might have gotten myself into. But Tibbe was neutered a bit later and has never once marked in this house and, once he got his housebreaking training done, is completely clean in the house. He's had 2 or 3 "accidents" pooping when he was ill and that's it and he's 5 1/2 years old now. So, to me, with what I know now, I would say the gender really makes very little difference enough that I can discern. I think the differences are more the dog's own temperament than gender once neuter/spaying have taken place. Good luck with your search. |
I really think it's a matter of opinion. All Yorkies have their own personalities and temperaments. So when picking a gender, it's owner specific. Either way, it's a great pet! |

Great, perfect, Thanks for the advice!! :aimeeyork |
I have never owned a male but I adore my females. I have two females and wouldn't trade them for anything!! :D:D Rosie is lovey on HER terms. Lol. Mikki wants to be held like a baby. So I agree, I think each individual pup has their own unique personality. But I will say, it sure is a lot of fun buying dresses for girls!!;) And hair bows!! :p |
I wanted a female, but fell in love with a male! So happy I did he is my baby boy and my heart - I think Yorkies are special, male or female- either way you will be in love! |

I'm not sure on advice but girls & spaying = more money! |
I've heard girls ind with their daddies and boys are all about their mommies. As far as I can tell, it's somewhat true. Kaji is all about me. He has to be with me AT ALL TIMES. Sleeping in my arms, on my lap, etc. Girls are more independent and less needy. Yes they want love and cuddles on their terms. My friend is jealous of all the cuddle time I get. Likewise, sometimes I'd like some privacy. I had to draw the line when Kaji decided he NEEDED to be in my lap when I was in the restroom. Um... no. Sorry furry baby, that just doesn't work for me. |
I have a boy and he loves me and his daddy to pieces. I want to add a girl later this yr. I cant really tell the difference between him and Carley (my lab) they both are very affectionate and great family pets. My biggest worry was that he would be mean to her. Shes a rescue and is certainly not an alpha, but I made sure that they got along and things are wonderful :) |
There was just a poll on this not too long ago... I, personally, love and adore my males and wouldn't trade them for anything. The ONLY time I ever wish that I had a female dog is when I see the SUPER cute dresses out there. LOL! |

I have sent you a PM, let me know if you need any help with your quest :D |
As a breeder I have heard that the females are priced more due to them being the ones that have the pups. I don't know if that is true or not as I don't follow that type of pricing. Generally for me all pet pups are the same price regardless of their sex. My only price difference is if they are going for just pets or for showing then I have different prices for both. |
I've had a boy for six years and he's with me all the time, loves to cuddle and give kisses. My new girl pup loves her daddy most. She runs from me and won't cuddle at all with me. I think she thinks I'm the bad guy cuz I dress her, brush her, do baths, give meds, so she runs from me. Makes me kinda sad cuz I really wanted her to be close to me. I hope shell change her ways later! |
I read somewhere that Yorkie females love their families but males love everyone! I have a little boy and that seems true to me so far. |
My Micah and Yogi are my babies, the girls all love dh and stay in the recliner with him watching tv :) |
See, I really want one that is loving and wants a lot of cuddle time. Im really looking for a companion - type dog so it sounds like males are more like that... :) Thanks for ALL your feedback!! |

Like someone metioned, find a breeder and talk to them about the personality. Or you can always adpot!! :D Whatever you do, I wish you luck- I hope you find that special little baby that you are looking for! |
|
ahhh.. interesting poll! |
It is indeed!! Are you going to get a Yorkie M/F from a breeder or are you going to adpot? Have you gotten that far in your plans? Or is this your first step? |
I once read that Yorkie Females say "What can you do for me today?" and Males tend to say "What can I do for you today?" I have a very loving little man who loves to give kisses. My daughter has a female that is very particular about kisses but smiles when she sees you!!!! Who's to know?????? |
I think Kaji's is slightly modified. "What can I do for you? (As long as there is something in it for me)" ;) |
I'm a fan of male dogs and it doesn't matter the breed. I just find that they are more tolerating of children, affectionate and fun. I think female dogs are great too, I've only had one in my lifetime. I think her personality allowed for easier training and so that's what I like over the genders. I have a boy and am smitten with him. He's the man of my house. I only get bored with him when I can't put him in pink. |
Thanks for the advice. Nice information. |
I have only had a female Yorkie and she has been a real treat. She is full of spunk but she is also a little love bug. She was extremely easy to house train. |
