Car Windows Up or Down
 

Ok I am curious, do any of you put the windows down while driving on your cars with your furbabies riding with you? I see people all the time driving and the windows are down and the dogs are up and barking out the window....

Do dogs instinctively know NOT to jump, even when the car stops??? or do people just try it to see what will happen. I mean if God forbid something would attract them and they bolted out you could never stop in time to save them I personally have only put my windows down about 2-3 inches and Charlie is no where near tall enough to get up that high and if he could he is to large to fall out. (hes a teapot LOL)

So, Im interested to know, Car Windows Up or Down?

I think the better question is, why aren't these dogs strapped in a carseat/seatbelt? Then, it wouldn't matter about the windows.

I would never let my window down enough and my dog unstrapped to where it could jump out the window. No way.

I put Jackson in the Snoozer seat and that makes him tall enough to stick his nose out the window if I roll it down a few inches. I never put it all the way, even with him strapped him... God forbid something broke or whatever, and he jumped out the window for whatever reason... you just never know...

See Im not crazy!! I just keep thinking OMG what if they jumped out Charlie has a seat to sit in but it does not hold him down he can get up and move.

There was a story on here about one person who didn't strap there dog into there truck and had the window down thinking there dog would never jump and she did she jumped out the window. The only time Callie gets to do that is if its just through the neighborhood and someone is holding on to her very well and she does love it but I also worry about bugs and little rocks flying and hitting her in the eyes or mouth.

jason picks me up from work. cedric will ride in with daddy and he has to have the window down. we have a harness and leash on him...he has a snoozer but wants to be right at the window. i always keep them leashed you just never know..someone could reach and try to take them....in this crazy world one never knows.

We roll the windows down for our dogs on warm days, but only if they are strapped in and secure (whether that be by a carseat, the dog seat belt, or a leash and harness being held tightly by someone).... We know for an absolute fact that if Clyde wasn't strapped in he would jump out of the window to chase after something or say hello to someone as we are driving through town. Dexter on the other hand doesn't care much for the window lol.

It always freaks me out to see people driving around with little dogs unsecured to anything with their head far out the window. Anything could happen to that poor puppy! To sharp of a turn, a car accident, or the dog could just reach out to far and fall out in traffic. Once I saw someone driving around with a border collie in the back of the truck with the tailgate open and the poor dog wasn't secure to anything ... and they were on the freeway!

oh yes I have seen that too there is no way to save a dog jumping from the bed of a truck. the little dog i saw today that started me on this was in the back seat of a truck the driver was the only person in the truck and the window that was down was the back passenger

ZoE is always strapped in her carseat when in the car. The tether is long enough that she can get her head to the window, but there is no way she could get out of the window.

I drive with the windows down, or at least partially down, as long as the weather is fine & the wind isn't blowing too hard. I also almost always drive with the sunroof open....I hate feeling couped up in a car.

My brother had a beagle, Sparky. He used to "load up his huntin' dog, and a boy and his dog" would go do his errands, and while he never said anything, Sparky was a chick magnet.... Jr had visions of Sparky doing like every other dog in the world, hanging his head out, barking and smiling and laughing in the wind....only thing, Jr DID back up his "vision", he attached a leash to Sparky's halter, and loop it through the seat belt in the front seat. One day, Sparky saw something he wanted, and out the window he went....Jr said he looked over at Sparky, and all he sees is "Sparkys a$$hole and elbows, going out that window"......he almost wrecked his truck, getting pulled over, just certain he was going to have to go back and pick up his dead dog.....he got around to the passenger side of the truck, and there hung Sparky by his halter, front paws tucked comfortable up across his chest, little hind feet also tucked up tightly, in a completely upright position, Jr swears with a grin on his face, just like he was riding in a side car or something!!!!! Does that answer your question???? If it can happen all wrong, it will be one of OUR dogs that pulls off the impossible....so needless to say, there have never been anymore windows down in the car, no dogs riding freely in the cabin NOR wonderfully running around the back of a pickup truck, unrestrained.....and I have always secured any of my dogs in carriers or carseats, without fail.

cause cedric will whine and cry and honest i live less than one minute from my work. yes hes spoiled and we know that. so even in the winter he wants the window open. if we go anywherelse besides my work with all the babies they are all strapped in and cedric whines the whole ride!! its very joyful :eek: but safe. does everyone have to be so judgemental without knowing every last detail. jes if you think i would ever take my eyes off him for a second while hes enjoying the wind blowing in his hair your wrong. just saying.

I also want to add......riding in Houston Texas with your windows down and Yorkies in the car, I can promise you, you are BEGGING to be carjacked.........or just have some thug jump into your car and grab your babies!

Whoa! That is a very "lesson learned" story about Sparky, but I have to admit....I laughed at the vision of Sparky just hangin' out there. LOL!

Yeah, I know my dogs...they'd bolt if they could. They are just too curious.

I went back & read what you wrote.

From what you've written it seems that you strap him him when going places other than to work, but for work you don't bother as it's less than a minute away. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration more than 50% of accidents happen within 5 miles of home. Only 1 % of accidents occur over 50 miles from home. If you valued your pup you'd buckle him in at ALL times.
