Yorkie smell Hi, i'm thinking about getting a yorkie and currently doing all the research so that i know what i'm getting myself into and be prepared... My question is about the smell of the yorkies. i know all dogs have a natural smell. i also read that good hygiene, quality food, and skin/dental diseases affect how a dog will smell. However, i kept on reading about yorkies being "smellier" than other dogs? Is that true in your experience? How does a yorkie compared to other long hair toy breeds (eg. maltese? cotons?) that supposedly smell less? Also, is it possible to completely eliminate the "doggie smell"? i'm planning on keeping my yorkie really clean but there are people around me who are very sensitive to the smell. By "doggie smell" i don't even mean the one that it's stinky from a distance (hopefully that will never happen)...but the musty smell that lingers on your hand after petting the dogs. Thanks! |
My Yorkies don't have any 'smell' to them at all, maybe just the scent of shampoo or finishing spray left in their hair. In my experience, hounds and other short-haired types have more of an oily smell and feel to them, due to oils in their coats. There are some skin diseases/issues that may cause a 'off' odor, but a vet would be able to fix that. |
The only time my yorkie has a smell is if she has been outside but after 20 minutes or so it is gone and it is a smell all dogs put off when they go outside to let other dogs in the area know they are there and there is nothing you can do to eliminate that. I have never heard of yorkies being stinkier unless uncared for. I bathe mine weekly and brush her teeth weekly and no problems here unless she rolls in something or has thrown up. Where did you hear yorkies where stinky? |
I hadn't heard that yorkies are stinkier than other dogs, either. I have a big problem with "dog smell" - I can't take it at all (LOL). The yorkies I've been around, including my own, don't have that typical smell - it's great! |
Smellier... Really? I am shocked you are finding that info... Yea he they might smell like a sweaty little kid after coming inside after potty break for a few minutes. And if you put their paws to your nose, I mean actually just full blown smell their feet you will get either a popcorn or Fritos smell but other then that nope they don't smell. |
J is still a small pup but has a definate smell, especially when he wakes up. He smells a bit like a teenage boy's bedroom truth be told - a bit sweaty but nothing doggy and the smell fades once he has been awake and running around for a while. After that he smells quite nice a bit like salted popcorn and it is only noticeable if I actively sniff him As soon as he comes in we wipe off his paws and underside (we live in a VERY rainy part of England) and we give his nether region and eye area a gentle wash daily, brush his teeth every evening and a full bath once a week. Even when my parents had big dogs who I would normally assossiate doggy smell with there was no smell unless it had rained for a month solid and to be honest - everyone in England smells a bit like a river then. If you keep them generally clean and look after their teeth, ears and make sure collars, bedding, crates etc. are kept clean then there tends to be no problem. |
I have never noticed a stink or smell on mine. |
Yorkies are not smellier than any other dog. After a week Lexie smells like warm biscuits! :D I love it & can't stop sniffing her! :) |

I have never had any smell problems with Gracie. You are right that a good diet and proper hygiene are very important. Any dog can react to various ingredients in dog food so that could be an issue with any odor problems. |
Dexter & Clyde don't usually ever smell, and when they do it isn't bad and can be taken care of without a bath with wipes or something. |
i have a jack russell. a border collie cross german shepherd and a yorkshire terrier and none of my dogs smell !!!. people have commented on that fact they shouldnt smell if they are looked after properly |

OP - The only smell that you might smell on Mandie (other than her Fritos Feet) is if I haven't cleaned her face up yet for the day. Her face can get a little crusty if I don't and then it smells. Any other smell around the head would probably be a problem with the teeth or an ear infection. |

Smell is usually skin, ears, or mouth. I agree with the Fritos feet. -- I kind of like it though! LOL |
Mine don't go outdoors, so honestly they never really smell! My oldest does have own unique smell though.... But weirdly, it's a sweet smell! I think it depends on the owner and their hygein towards their pet, whatever breed! Most of us YTers are obsessed with our babies and fix any and all problems ASAP! They smell bad... 5 minutes later they bathe! Lol |
The only smell my two yorkies have is when they fart and believe me, they can clear a room out with those little "stink bombs!" For such a small dog, they really can do some damage with those stinks. But as far as a "doggy smell..." Umm, nope, they don't have that. |

So I just sniffed Hueys feet to see if they smell like fritos (his feet have always had their own scent, but I never associated it with fritos) but he had a bath this am and just smells soapy and perfumy and good. If has been outside on a hot day basking in a sunbeam, he will smell kinda like a sweaty small child, but it goes away as soon as he cools off in the a.c. |
Bailey has no smell other than when he's been out running and jumping around outside. Then he has a typical dog smell. But I think it actually goes away later. A good bath and he smells like a petunia! |
Smelly dog! Hello, I just joined this group since we recently rescued a dog that appears to be part Yorki. Poor thin downright STINKS! Lovey was a very sick dog covered in mange, infested with worms. All those issues are resolved, her hair is growing back, worm negative now as well, she remains slightly anemic but that is improving as well. We feed (dry food)California Natural Grain Free Chicken Meal. We live in the USA. We have 2 other dogs one large one small. No treats except for apples carrots bananas. Just don't trust anything anymore. Due to the mange she has to receive medicated baths almost daily since she was covered in green pustules. Now that that is all resolved she still stinks. If she is in your lap and gets up you can smell it on you clothes. It is not from her anal glands it is her entire body! Just was wondering if this is a breed thing? Gave her an Aveeno oatmeal bath last night and smells horrid this morning. Poor little girl is happy and lively but stinks up the house! I am sensitive to perfumes so I done want to go the doggy perfume route. Any suggestions...sorry this is so long, just wanted to give her history. |
Its not a breed thing. One bath a week is all it takes to keep mine sweet smelling and shiny. Could it be dental? Are all the skin sores completely healed? Could the dog still have an underlying medical problem such as kidney failure or gi issues? If none of these are a possible source of the smell, I would go back to the vet and have the dog rechecked. There shouldn't be a bad odor, especially with daily baths. Oh, and welcome to YT! |

There is a product called Yorkie Splash and Shine that many people use here. It is all natural and many use the products weekly to bathe the dogs. It has a great all natural fragrance that usually lasts at least a week. If it is a skin issue that may help if you use it weekly. It does not dry the skin and is very conditioning. Does she have any red spots left behind or dry areas? There are some other all natural products out there but this is the one that has worked well for me. |
