Lazy Puppy?? Hey guys, So we have had our little chocolate yorkie Chewy for about 4 weeks now. He is now 5 months old. He has been a very laid back puppy from day one. But, I am little concerned about his laziness. I have never had a puppy that was not very playful. I am just concerned that something may be wrong. He eats and drinks normally. He has had some bouts of lose stool, but I think that is because he is just getting use to a different puppy food than what the breeder was feeding him. He pretty much sleeps the whole evening after I feed him when I come home from work. And this is after being his xpen all day while I am at work. Maybe this is just his personality?? All my other dogs have been sooo different. Could something be wrong with him?? Am I just being overly worried?? He is sweet as he can be:animal36 |

Any pics? We would love to see some! |
I don't think he's lazy but it is a little strange that he doesn't want to run around and play after being in the xpen all day. To rule out anything physical, if it were me (and I'm vet-happy according to my hubby lol), I would take him to the vet and get him checked out..maybe do some blood work to make sure all his levels (like blood sugar and thyroid) are ok. |
I agree with the others and I when I am torn between wondering if I'm just worrying needlessly or if it really warrants a vet visit, I tell myself it's worth the $50 or $100 just to have peace of mind. |
Did he get a check up by your vet when you got him? |
I agree that what you describe is not typical Yorkie puppy behavior. Yes, take a stool sample in to have it checked. A puppy can easily become hypoglycemic by not eating all day. He should have food and water through out the day. |
Florabug! I just got a big rock in the pit of my stomach reading your post. Please take that little guy in to the vet for a complete workup. Even a 5 year old dog wouldn't be that lethargic. He should be getting into mischief and running all over the place. It could be something very simple and easy to fix but something is definely wrong. Good luck and please let us know what the vet says. Hugs L |
1 Attachment(s) He is pretty frisky in the mornings, but that is the extent of it. I have just been telling myself that maybe he wears himself out during the day whining and barking and trying to get out of his pen...this goes on for at least 2 hours while I am gone. He did get checked out by the vet and believe it or not he was a little fireball while he was there:rolleyes: The vet did not do any blood work but they did get a stool sample, but of course that was 3 weeks ago. I think I will definitely take him to the vet this Wednesday while I am off from work! Thanks! Hers is a pic of him |

he sure is a cutie :) |
A cute one for sure. If you've been to the vet and had his stool checked, then I don't imagine that's an issue. Does he have any favorite toys he likes to play with? Will he play fetch if you toss one of them around? |
I would still get a blood work up done - maybe sugars are low or something. That pic --- I just wanna scoop him up and give him kisses!! How adorable!!! |
Troy was a lazybones I had a similar laid back puppy. Troy rarely played with toys, he wasn't a chewer or got into anything. He ate normally but he just slept the majority of the time and he just wanted to sit in my lap. He is like that to this day 3 years later. I did take Troy to the vet and had the necessary tests and nothing was up. So it could just be his personality. Laid back yorkie. |
Before he is labeled Lazy or Laidback, get him thoroughly checked out. You have had him 4 weeks, your gut instinct is concern. Once you get him thoroughly checked out and labeled healthy...then you can spoil his lazy but....I would do it sooner rather than later. And OMG he is beautiful, really beautiful...! |
Be careful take him to the vet have them do a fecal test.. and bloodwork..I bought a yorkie puppy 2 weeks ago and she died yesterday... I had noticed she was sleeping a lot and not really wanting to eat and drinking and peeing a lot. Took her to the vet and they told me something was very wrong...I had to admit her to the hospital...they told me it looked like she had congenital kidney failure... at only 12 weeks old my poor baby...they tried everything to save her and when they tried to put a cath in her heart stopped.... I am still crying.... please make sure he is ok.... I don't want anything bad to happen to him... yorkies can have many health problems if you catch it early they maybe saved |
He is beautiful |
