Lazy Puppy?? Hey guys, So we have had our little chocolate yorkie Chewy for about 4 weeks now. He is now 5 months old. He has been a very laid back puppy from day one. But, I am little concerned about his laziness. I have never had a puppy that was not very playful. I am just concerned that something may be wrong. He eats and drinks normally. He has had some bouts of lose stool, but I think that is because he is just getting use to a different puppy food than what the breeder was feeding him. He pretty much sleeps the whole evening after I feed him when I come home from work. And this is after being his xpen all day while I am at work. Maybe this is just his personality?? All my other dogs have been sooo different. Could something be wrong with him?? Am I just being overly worried?? He is sweet as he can be:animal36 |

Any pics? We would love to see some! |
I don't think he's lazy but it is a little strange that he doesn't want to run around and play after being in the xpen all day. To rule out anything physical, if it were me (and I'm vet-happy according to my hubby lol), I would take him to the vet and get him checked out..maybe do some blood work to make sure all his levels (like blood sugar and thyroid) are ok. |
I agree with the others and I when I am torn between wondering if I'm just worrying needlessly or if it really warrants a vet visit, I tell myself it's worth the $50 or $100 just to have peace of mind. |
Did he get a check up by your vet when you got him? |
I agree that what you describe is not typical Yorkie puppy behavior. Yes, take a stool sample in to have it checked. A puppy can easily become hypoglycemic by not eating all day. He should have food and water through out the day. |
Florabug! I just got a big rock in the pit of my stomach reading your post. Please take that little guy in to the vet for a complete workup. Even a 5 year old dog wouldn't be that lethargic. He should be getting into mischief and running all over the place. It could be something very simple and easy to fix but something is definely wrong. Good luck and please let us know what the vet says. Hugs L |
1 Attachment(s) He is pretty frisky in the mornings, but that is the extent of it. I have just been telling myself that maybe he wears himself out during the day whining and barking and trying to get out of his pen...this goes on for at least 2 hours while I am gone. He did get checked out by the vet and believe it or not he was a little fireball while he was there:rolleyes: The vet did not do any blood work but they did get a stool sample, but of course that was 3 weeks ago. I think I will definitely take him to the vet this Wednesday while I am off from work! Thanks! Hers is a pic of him |

he sure is a cutie :) |
A cute one for sure. If you've been to the vet and had his stool checked, then I don't imagine that's an issue. Does he have any favorite toys he likes to play with? Will he play fetch if you toss one of them around? |
I would still get a blood work up done - maybe sugars are low or something. That pic --- I just wanna scoop him up and give him kisses!! How adorable!!! |
Troy was a lazybones I had a similar laid back puppy. Troy rarely played with toys, he wasn't a chewer or got into anything. He ate normally but he just slept the majority of the time and he just wanted to sit in my lap. He is like that to this day 3 years later. I did take Troy to the vet and had the necessary tests and nothing was up. So it could just be his personality. Laid back yorkie. |
Before he is labeled Lazy or Laidback, get him thoroughly checked out. You have had him 4 weeks, your gut instinct is concern. Once you get him thoroughly checked out and labeled healthy...then you can spoil his lazy but....I would do it sooner rather than later. And OMG he is beautiful, really beautiful...! |
Be careful take him to the vet have them do a fecal test.. and bloodwork..I bought a yorkie puppy 2 weeks ago and she died yesterday... I had noticed she was sleeping a lot and not really wanting to eat and drinking and peeing a lot. Took her to the vet and they told me something was very wrong...I had to admit her to the hospital...they told me it looked like she had congenital kidney failure... at only 12 weeks old my poor baby...they tried everything to save her and when they tried to put a cath in her heart stopped.... I am still crying.... please make sure he is ok.... I don't want anything bad to happen to him... yorkies can have many health problems if you catch it early they maybe saved |
He is beautiful |

Your right about getting the OP's puppy carefully checked out. There are so many things that can be wrong. Sometimes they sneak up on you. Vets that are not aware of Yorkie problems might not do the right tests without someone leading them in the right direction. |

:love:Your little furbutt is just adorable! I would love to just pick him up and snuggle into all of that hair! I can tell you from experience that illnesses can creep up on you with these guys. Trust your gut and try to get him in sooner rather than later. If nothing is wrong you are going to have everyone on hear jealous because they can't cuddle with him! Hugs L |
Awwww.... He's Soooo CUTE!!!! My Riley is a laid back, pretty quiet boy... Never gets into anything. I am always amazed how unbelievably well behaved he is even when I take him places. My Friends actually get upset with me if I don't bring him with me. LOL!! Keep us posted!! :) |
Kyra is a laid back yorkie....She would play with Laddy but when we first got her and he refused to play with her she slept alot and played very little. She did have coccidia when we first got her though and not sure if that was why or not but she is still a very laid back little girl. |
Well I spoke with the breeder and she said that he was very playful while inher care?? Anyway, she suggested I give some Karo syrup incase he might have low blood sugar... well i did that and it made no difference in his energy level. She also said that he might have coccidia. I will take him to the vet to have that checked. I would have thought if he had coccidia that they would have seen it when they did a stool sample 3 weeks ago:confused:... he almost acts like hes depressed?? He doesnt get excited about anything... Hopefully I will find out something this week. |
I saw no signs of it in Kyra either but the vet found it in her stool sample. If there has been a change in the home they can get depressed also. When we were packing up for our move both of ours got that way. |
**update** Well, I took little chewy to the vet and everything checked out ok. In fact..he has not had any diarrhea for 3 days.:D Vet says to just give him a probiotic to help his system. As far as the "laziness" goes, guess hes just gonna be a laid back puppy. I can deal with that as long as he is healthy. He was practically doing cartwheels at the vet. That is the most excited I have seen him in a while... silly dog:animal36 |
Maybe he does get worn out if he carries on when you leave. How long is he left alone for? If he is alone for long periods maybe he is a little depressed...You might need to get someone to come check in on him every few hours. Did you ever have a lazy day where you slept in, then watched football and fell asleep, and the more you rested the more tired you got? Maybe that is going on also... |
He is only left alone 3-4 hours at a time. I come home for an hour for lunch and then go back to work. He has alot of separation anxiety. I thought that after doing this routine for 4 weeks now, he would get a little use to it, but he has not. |
