Puppies for Christmas I was heartbroken when we were in PetCo today and got talking to a young couple and discovered the adorable little Maltese puppy was a CHRISTMAS PRESENT for the guys daughter. I wonder how long before it ends up at the animal shelter.... Louise and Zachary |
Hopefully, Mom will realize it is really hers and fall in love. |
I'll tell ya.....I get emails from shelters regularly about what dogs they have recently taken in. It is so sad. I would say that the Chihuahua is the most prevalent, then the Yorkie, Shih Tzu, and Maltese, plus the mixes of all 4. It would break your heart to see these poor animals. Who knows what the people were thinking when they purchased these poor darlings?!:( I wish they had thought a little harder and longer about it. They are so adorable as puppies. Then reality sets in. |
I can not imagine purchasing a 'surprise' puppy for a gift for anyone for any reason. I begged for a puppy poodle for two years as a child and at the age of 12 my mother purchased a tiny poodle girl for me for Christmas. She was my comfort,my heart and for many years my only true friend. She weighed less than 3 lbs full grown and she was treated like a baby. She wore clothes before it was the cool thing to do with your doggie, her nails were always done and she is why I learned to groom dogs,I wasnt willing to turn her care over to anyone for any reason. This is the relationship that each of those parents should be hoping for,for their child when they make that purchase. It is sad that all they see is that there will be joy in their kids eyes for a day or week. My prayer is that each of the little puppys that find homes for Christmas, find a home forever with someone that will see them for the special little soul that they are. |
I can't read this thread but I know what it is...some people are idiots and all they care about is giving the best gift...it irks me....I'm so glad that my local shelter does not allow adoptions during the holidays...thank god... |
Sad . . . So many go to the shelter . . . I like because the peed on the carpet or they bite. . . . They are puppies whAt do you expect them to do. Buy a stuffed animal next time |
I guess I am a bad person.. I purchased my child a puppy for Christmas too... I know I should know better BUT I promise she will not end up in a shelter because Guinness will love his puppy :p Yep still sticking with my the puppy is his present story :p |
That's too bad... I definitely do not think suprise puppies are a good idea at all. |

I realllllllyyyyy want another puppy but I am going to wait a little longer and then get one. This time a standard so there is no shine off my little prince LOL |
I got my son & I a puppy for Christmas. This was the perfect time for our little family since I'm off work & we can be home with him. I agree surprise puppies are not a good idea, but not ALL Christmas pups end up in shelters. |
Its probably not the best time to get a puppy I think because of the hustle and bustle of the Holidays but I dont believe all or even many pups gotten at Christmas end up at shelters |

We had to make some sacrifices to keep that little dog. Sadly, many people will not let an animal ruin their being able to have what they want. If a parent wants to get a pet for their child they need to realize that that pet is really going to be the parents responsibility. They are the adults and need to decide if they want to take on all that goes with having a pet. So many people think getting a puppy is like getting the latest electronic toy! |
I agree with most of yall. It is not just the time or the fact that its a present it is who the owner is.... I am like many of you... I will do what it takes to care for my fur family. I have "given" my children puppies, but I KNEW it was ME who would care for the dog. Now they are adults and they learned from my role model. |

:thumbup: Exactly! :D Even when I had said "no" and/or had nothing to do with acquiring the puppy/dog, they were all loved and treated well, and every oone has become 'mommy's baby' even when they started out 'daddy's dog' or otherwise...:p No animal should ever be punished for the human's mistake... |
