A Yorkie Story Hi, I'm a middle aged guy, urban professional, not a dog person at all. Ivaguely remember having dogs as a kid, though I never cared about them. Andthen one day two months ago... A couple of friends with a Yorkie asked my girlfriend if she could take careof their dog while they went out of town. She lives with me, and I reluctantlyagreed to the idea. Late one night my GF brought him home. The next morning (she's goes to nightschool), I knew I'd have to walk him. I woke up and unzipped the carrier bag hewas sleeping in. Out popped a five pound ball of fur. He looked up at me andwhined. Farley is a two year old male they'd picked up somewhere in Asian whilestudying abroad. He only has one eye as a result of a car accident. I had no idea what to do that morning - it took me 20 minutes to even figureout how to get his harness on. Finally we hit the street. When a much largerdog turned the corner and came at us, I panicked. Fortunately the dog ignoredFarley. "Oh, it's a Yorkie!" the owner said as she passed. "Awhat-ie?" I asked. Long story short: Big guy falls in love with tiny dog. By Day 2 we werewatching TV together. By Day 3 we were racing each other down the beach afterwork, and by Day 4 I was begging the girlfriend to let him sleep in bed withus. Eventually the sad day came when I had to return him to his mom and dad. Inthe weeks that followed, they let me borrow him a couple more times, but finallyput their foot down and told me to get my own damn dog. J My girlfriend, always a dog person, is now demanding we adopt for a dog. Shewants something bigger, and wants to rescue a dog. But while I’ve tried to open my heart toother breeds, I can’t shake the fact that I’m a Yorkie man. And hey, I'm payingthe mortgage. To be continued as events develop... |
Awwwwwwwwww, I just loved this! My hubby is a yorkie man too :D. |
Haha! Welcome to YorkieTalk! |
They tend to have that effect on men :p |
Awh gosh!!! What a sweet story!!! Can't wait to read updates! Hope you get your Yorkie!! How could anyone not love them? |
HAHA!! I had wanted a yorkie for years, but my DH always said he didn't want a yappy little dog....long story short....he is now the very proud daddy of three!!!! Merry Christmas!!! May you find a yorkie under your tree Christmas morning....I hope I do. :D |
Never really known a real man a Yorkie didn't work his heart over but good in no time. A Yorkie may look tiny and cute but he is a true terrier and most guys love the tenacity and attitude of terriers! They have no fear and are excellent guard dogs. They will stand down a much bigger dog, sometimes to their own detriment. Just get a big rescue Yorkie, one of those teapot ones that weighs in at 15 lbs. or more. Maybe that will satisfy gf's rescue heart and get you your Yorkie. They are always up for lots of action as they were bred to be ratters on farms and in mills of old. |
Awww, my husband has a shadow named Max who is a yorkie! He is a mans kind of dog. Stocky, short and a couch potato unless they are fishing or hunting!!!! Best of luck in your search! :animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |
That's what I'm talkin' about! Us men gotta stick together. Once I saw my first Yorkie, I knew! They are such a great little animal (my wife would differ and say they're human). Good luck. I can tell you this much. I wanted the Yorkie and my wife didn't want another dog. We adopted Bailey and a day doesn't go by that she doesn't thank me for bringing him home. |
awwwwww that is just an amazing story. my dh wasnt a dog man and we started with cedric our first yorkie and since we have rescued two more and like you he is head over heels in love with them. cant wait to hear the outcome!!! |
My husband is a yorkie man, that's because yorkies think they are big dogs and are not always the lap dogs one might expect. My Lola keeps Ian on his toes because she is so darn fast and can't get enough of her toys and fetching. Plus they don't shed or droll so sleeping in bed with a yorkie is a lot cleaner than sleeping in bed with a golden retriever. Not all yorkies are teeny tiny either so that might help your girlfriend warm up to one, good luck and i hope you get a yorkie |
I forgot to add that unfortunately there are many yorkies that are in need of rescuing and there are many yorkie rescue groups, so be sure to check into that. Just make sure that you know what you are getting into with a rescue, some do require a lot of patience and care before they come out of their shell, but if you work with a reputable organization they will be honest about the needs of the dogs they would offer you for adoption. Many yorkie talk members have opened their hearts and homes to rescue yorkies with great success. |
They seem to have that effect on men. My husband reluctantly let me get Toby. He did not like little dogs at all he said they were all too yippy. Then Toby won him over. When I wanted a girl he said okay. In the process he fell in love with my girls sister (our Blue Angel). We got both girls. It didn't take him long to fall in love with them. Now they meet him at the door everynight when he comes home and with him is where they stay until bed time. He tells all his guy friends now that they need a yorkie and how much he loves his girls. We also had a special little boy named Colby join our family too. He loves the boys, but the girls have stolen his heart. Yorkies are the only ones I have seen have this effect on men. His dream dog was an old english, but he doesn't want one now. I hope when your story continues you will tell us all about your new yorkie. |
This was so sweet. Good luck! |
My DH referred to Blazer (and other small dogs) as "Muskie Bait" and he didn't want a "yappy little ankle biter." Well, Blazer was given to me as a gift by my neighbor and I brought him home despite all of DH's insistance that it wasn't going to happen. My DH and my puppy are now inseperable! They absolutely LOVE each other and I couldn't be happier about it! |
We got our first yorkie when he was 3 mos., now he's a year old. My husband did not want him.....but now, OMG he's so in love and would kill if anyone would hurt our little guy. There's nothing like a yorkie, I used to raise springer spaniels, but I have never had a dog like my yorkie.. STICK TO YOUR GUNS, she will also fall in love, it only takes minutes. BTW, I love your story! |
I loved your story and it sure made me smile. I hope to one day soon, come on here and see that you have your yorkie! |
Can't wait for the rest of the story. My hubby has always been a dog person, but only BIG dogs. He's been wrapped around my Yorkie's paw sense we picked her up the day we got her. (They have a magical power ya know. hehe) |
My oldest daughter is honey to the neighborhood boys bees. They flock around her and come a courting, even though my oldest isn't at all interested in any of them. These kids, I have kind of adopted, I'm their second mom, I have fed them all, chided them about grades and girls, put them to work and slipped them a few dollars. And it's funny, because they all consider themselves super tough guys. Pixie has turned every one of these muy macho hombres into Yorkie lovers. Even though she's a delicate very feminine lady, she is tough as nail and feisty and managed to wrap them all around her tiny little paws. Sabre.. WOW, Sabre though, he's all many manly swagger strut. They might have fallen in love with Pixie, but Sabre is their best bud, their homie, their bro. It's so odd having these half grown men knocking on my door asking if they can take Sabre for a walk. Not Pixie.. SABRE, their homie, their bro, their best bud. Do I know they're using my puppy to get chicks? Of course I do, Do I care? Not a bit, lol. Sabre is their wingman.. err.. dog... Except these is one guy, Pixie is his girl. I have pictures of this big burly 6 foot something, 280 plus pound young man cuddling with my 4 lb little teeny yorkie. Pixie is his girl, lol. When he has a place, he wants me to help him find a yorkie like Pixie, lol. |
To the OP What a great post. You deserve a YORKIE. Your galfriend will fall in love 24-49 hours later .... I would bet on it. Well it seems like we are all sharing our Yorkie stories. So ours is... I am a large dog breeder as is hubby, and we train with a great Latvian trainer who also breeds Yorkies. And I train 3x per week, and her Yorkies are there, all the time for 3.5 yrs. I fell in love with the Yorkies. I wanted a small dog for my sister who lives with me, and also an agility dog. So..... I ambushed my hubby who was still of the mindset they are ankle biters. I got my wish a Yorkie from my breeder. He is now a GCH in two countries! My Yorkie that is....lol It took hubby less than one year to totally fall in love with our Razzman. At the shows he would walk him, and literally strut down the aisleways with Razz. He takes him out of his crate in the morning carries upthe stairs to go potty outside. He actually washed him one time for the show ring! Awh this is big. I have a very complicated way of washing a show dog, and blow drying the dog. First time ever for hubby ever helping me prepare a dog for show! So I so hope you get your wish! |
Gotta tell you that men just love my little girl. They go nuts for her. When ever we have workers here doing things to the house or property my jaw about drops when I see how guys just melt for this dog! When I take her for walks in the park it is always a guy that stops to say hello and goes ga ga over her. I know that some guys use cute dogs as a "chick magnet" but I have to say that if I was in the market I could have snagged a few guys myself by now! Yorkies may be small but they have huge personalities. Choose wisely though there are a lot of bad breeders out there.:( |
Love the story. My husband adores Georgie and actually Georgie is a total Daddy's boy:rolleyes: Yorkies are amazing! Good luck in your search you will be a great Yorkie Dad:) |
Awwww...aren't they just the greatest little kids ever? :teethysmi My DH did not think he'd ever want a little dog. Now, he knows he'll never want any other kind of dog other than a Yorkie, and he is selling all his friends on getting their own Yorkie...some have...some are looking. Good Luck! Can't wait:happyboun for 'the rest of the story'...Hi, and Welcome! :yorkiesar |

We (fiance and myself) were up in Port Perry, I spot a lady with a gorgeous little dog...you know I had to go speak to her! She tells me Gigi is a Yorshire Terrier, AND she has puppies available! Mark says 'are you out of your mind, you have three cats!' So a week later I call her and tell her I am interested, she tells me they will be ready to go home when they are 12wks old. So we go up to pick up Raelle at the appointed time....Mark falls in love with the 'little fur ball'! A month later the 'breeder' calls and tells me that Gigi had two puppies, a boy and a girl, am I interested? Of course I am! So Orion comes home...Mark says 'ok I get it' hehehe...knew he would! I had been researching Biewers...didn't think I would be able to bring one home til the new year. Mark asks me have I picked a breeder? Yuppers! He then shocks me and asks does she have any available now? I call and the breeder says she does, she will be ready for September (this year)! So we make the almost two hour drive to Beamsville and Jersey comes home with us! This all happened in the space of one year! These pups sometimes get more lovin and kisses than I do! They always get 'Love you guys so much!':rolleyes::rolleyes: He was always a 'big' dog lover....my three have him wrapped around their paws! Can't wait to see the end of the story...I love happy endings! Hopefully GF will come around and you will have your yorkie! Oh and Welcome to YT! |
Forgot to add, sweet story, made me smile! |
My dh is a yorkie man. :). They melt your hearts |

Awwwwwwwwwww! love this story!!! I have highlighted what I think the key words/principles are in YOUR argument! First, and in my opinion, the word "GIRLFRIEND"!! If that word was "boyfriend" and the shoe was on the other foot, I would find most of us on here would just as enthusiastically be telling HER, "Get rid of the boyfriend!!" So, I will boldly say, she is a girlfriend....she is actually in NO position to be "DEMANDING" anything!! The second word on my list is, "ALWAYS", as in "she has always been a dog person". If this is true, she will do flips over ANY dog you get....whereas for YOU, this is an entirely new direction for YOU, and she SHOULD be absolutely thrilled at this chip in your veneer! My next word is actually a phrase that clarifies a thought, "...cant shake the fact...". THIS is serious!! YOU have fallen hopelessly in love with what I personally consider the most wonderful breed of any God has given us, a precious, devoted, mischieveous, endearing, Yorkie! For someone that has not always been a dog lover, your girlfriend SHOULD be capitalizing on this change!! SHE loves ANY dog, because she has always been a dog lver....you are still wet behind the ears with this bottomless, unfettered love you have only now found yourself....she would be WISE to utilize this in her effort to live with a dog in her life!! And last but certainly, not LEAST, since you are to date, in FACT, a single man, and YOU "pay the mortgage", I can not imagine ANY woman that would ever hope to eventually marry the man she is living with, rent free, I can NOT imagine she would even DARE to DEMAND her beloved boyfriend, who is new to this puppy love stuff, change his heart from his new found love of Yorkies, to "something bigger"....???!!!!! WHAT IS UP WITH YOU, GIRLFRIEND!!!???? Let your MAN run HIS HOUSE!!!!! TO OUR NEW FOUND, NEWLY RECRUITED YORKIEMAN, you are holding the winning hand here!! If necessary, pull rank! You will meet her halfway...you will agree to getting a dog, but that dog MUST be a YORKIE....take it or leave it. If she says NO....you TRUMP her.....YOU pay the mortgage, you have NO WIFE, and YOU want a YORKIE....she can either learn to like the Yorkie or...............she can move in with someone that wants a bigger breed! Now, I will go feed my new momma!!! |
The only time I saw my husband cry was when we had to say good-bye to our 16 yr old yorkie, Peach. Even though I trained her and fed her, she was totally his dog. They say taking on a pet is a "contract with sorrow." But the sorrow is for a later day. In the meantime, there are yorkie kisses to be had! |
Hehehehe so cute! My husband didnt want a small dog either, but I got my Joey anyways...and now they are best buds too...although hes a mommas boy ;) |
