What kind of harnesses is everyone using I have been using an RC pet harness for Wallee since I got him and since he has been giving me the evil eye lately when I do it up I decided to measure him and check out the sizing chart. I wasn't sure if the harness was too tight or if his hair was getting caught in the clip since I could still get my finger between the harness and him. When I measured him I discovered his neck is around 10 inches however his girth is almost 15 inches. According to the sizing chart the one he is wearing is for neck up to 11 and girth 14.5 and weight 10 lbs. (He is around that now). The next size has a neck opening of 12 inches and girth of 15-21. I am not sure if this will be too big? I like this style of mesh harness as I think it looks comfortable and it is good and sturdy for strapping him in the car. Anyone have any recommendations for harnesses that fit well and are comfortable? |
My favorite is Puppia as far as durability, comfort, and safety go. They're super easy for me to put on/take off too and throw in the washer when needed. Lots love the Buddy Belt. They are very well made and amazing quality, just wasn't for us. There's also the leather ChokeFree. I really like the Premier SureFit harness too - as I often have trouble fitting Jackson in harnesses well. I dogsit a dog that uses these and I am going to be purchasing one for Jackson soon - basic, but great reviews. We use the ComfortFlex Sport Harness for agility. Jackson is 16lbs with a 19" girth and wears a Medium Puppia mesh harness (regular kind). I like shopping around at GollyGear.com, BaxterBoo.com and amazon for harnesses! |
The two harnesses we have are the buddy belt and step-in harnesses made by Chatties mom. I would recommend either harness as we love both of them! Good luck on your hunt to find a perfect harness for your baby! :) |
I used Puppia Sport step in harnesses for P-Nut until he was about a year old. Very comfy. Now we love Buddy Belts - comfy, great looking, durable. Thanks to YTers for recommending them! |
I always used Puppia harnesses. But, after having a bad scare with a Puppia step-in harness (style B), where ZoE turned around & backed her way right out of it in my front yard (I live on a main raod...so quite scary), I switched to the Buddy Belts, because they seemed more secure (never had an escape issue while using them). But the Buddy Belts DESTROYED her hair. It caused a crazy amount of hair breakage around her arms/shoulders. Now, if I was a fan of keeping a yorkie in short hair, that would be fine. But I'm a traditionalist....to me a yorkie isn't a yorkie without long hair. So I rarely use a Buddy Belt unless its going over clothing. Now I'm back to the Puppia, for daily use, but just stick to the over-the-head kind (style A), which I've never had any kind of issue with. I also like that I can get nice matching harnesses & leashes with their line. |

For me, right now I use puppia. The only reason I want to change to the buddy belt is because of a story that happened to someone on this forum a few months back (Yazmin/Carla). When I read how that buddy belt stayed on Yazmin when the man was trying to steal her and how it didn't break and how Yazmin had no injuries, I was SOLD. :D |
We also use Buddy Belts. Zeus has short hair and on the rare occasion that he's not wearing a shirt/sweater/coat/etc, it hasn't rubbed his skin raw or pulled out his hair. Before that we were using a brand similar to Puppia. Zeus was constantly getting out of it in the car so we switched to the BBs and I think Zeus loves it more than the other. He'll step into this and would run from the previous harness, LOL. Even though he'll put his head through clothes, he wouldn't with that old harness. |
My favorite harnesses are ipuppyone. They are similar to Puppia but less expensive (I am a bargain hunter!!) but I especially appreciate them since they are durable and I can toss them in the wash without them getting worn out. There's quite a few suppliers online, but my absolute favorite website to order them from is http://www.pupincloset.com/ They have quite the selection, and lots of mesh ones too. =) Hope that helps! |
Me and my mom both use Buddy belts and love them. Callie used a puppia harness when she was about a year old and it ripped and had I not noticed it she would have been gone (she is 16 pounds). |
We've been happy with the Buddy Belt, but Yorkietalk just got a new member, LingC, who manufactures and sells harnesses. Today I was adding her name to the new vendors' list, and I checked out her site. It's a really cute harness and the thing I really love about it has a handle on the the harness. So many times that would have come in handy when I wanted to pick Joey up in a hurry. Check it out. Thinking Bubbles, by the way, she's offering YT members free shipping! |

I have some sort of a mesh harness for Blazer that I bought when he was only a few weeks old. (I think I have a picture of him wearing it in my album.) It seems plenty comfortable for him but lately I've been thinking of trying out a different style, so thanks for starting this thread! =) I've seen some harnesses that look like a vest with double D rings. Does anyone here prefer those? |

Hi, I've never had any issues or complaints with it, especially because #1) the straps are adjustable , and #2) the interior harness is removable. All 4 of my dogs wear the vests (Swear to God), two of them wear them with the harness attached (the younger ones) and the older ones don't like to wear it with the harness. But even without it, they are still very safe because I've used extra strong velcro... Riley weighs 15-16lbs, and I can easily pick him up by the handle comfortably. I haven't noticed any signs of their discomfort so far. I did a lot of experimenting and trials on my own doggies to make sure that they are safe and comfortable before the final product was okayed. If you have any other questions, let me know. |

I am really into that handle thing so I may be adding another want to my "To Get" list :D |
When I went to the Pet Expo last year, there was a San Francisco company that sold handle harnesses. I had completely forgotten about them until now - I thought they were great! Especially for our little ones. I had a large dog run across the street towards us during a walk one day and I lifted Zeus by the leash and spun him around (just in case it was an aggressive dog) but a handle would have been great. Luckily the dog was all bark. |
We started with a harness from fourpaws and liked it but not to durable. Looked under her chin one day and there was a hole she had chewed in it. Granted she is still teething and that probably had a lot to do with the hole. Next got a harness from doggie design and like it a lot but then we got the buddy belt and love it cause of the ease putting it on her. She still fights having everything put on but is getting better. |
When Gracie was a puppy I used the Puppia step in vest harness. It kept her secure and helped me to deal with her pulling until she was trained. Now that she is an adult I use the silk harness made by Chattiesmom here on YT. It is a simple step in harness that does not mess up the fur but gives you good control over you dog. It adjusts to the body size very well. Gracie and I both love it. It is less constricting than the Puppia was and was much cooler for her this summer. It also fits nicely under her coat now that it is colder. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-foxypups.html This is an older post but the contact info is still the same. I personally like having the d ring up closer to the neck because it gives you more control if you need to make a correction. |
I really like the look of the handled harness. I don't however see a sizing chart for them. I also love the idea of not having to put it over his head. I know that taking the harness off that he currently has ( very similar to the puppia) is a pain as his hair is so curly and taking it off seems to snag in his hair on his neck. I also wonder if she is willing to ship to Canada for free. I am not sure how quickly it can get here and will have to double check just how critical the replacement is as I know Wallee has room in the neck however am not sure how tight exactly it is around his girth. Do I just do the two finger rule to see if it is actually "too tight"? I would love to be able to hold off and continue using the one he has so I can order one from the bubbles line, however do not want him to be totally uncomfortable on his daily walks. I hate wasting money on a harness that I will only use for a couple weeks until I can have one shipped that I really like. |
Hi Wallee, how much does your baby weigh and what are his measurements? |
Wallee weighs 10 pounds. His neck is 10 inches and his girth is 14.5 inches. |
Ziva wears a silk step in from Chatties mom:D. I ordered it when Ziva was a year old and it still fits! (very adjustable) We think it is the best because of the hot weather here and we were having trouble with matting and hair breakage under Zivas arms with mesh harnesses! |
Sophie Kate uses two harnesses, her Buddy Belt for walks and the Puppia for when we are riding in the car (it hooks very securely to her Snoozer). |

Wallee can wear a Small. Small fits neck 8-10", chest 12-17"/ medium fits neck 10-12", chest 15-20". Also, I will offer free shipping to Canada, Happy Holidays!!! Hope that helps:) |
Harness I use the Doggie Design mesh harness. It is very easy to use and flexible enough to be comfortable. My dog is ten pounds and has the Small, which is fine. I liked this one more than the Puppia. |
We are HUGE Buddy Belt fans. They last for a very long time, it gets softer w/regular use & best of all, it's choke free. We got them from Kristen (Maximo). Designer Dog Clothes, Dog Accessories | W. Field's Dog Boutique |
