My wheaten terrier used to have a problem with this years ago until the local petstore owner told me to change her food and never give her people food (processed meats especially). It cleared up so fast along with lots of her allergies. Now that grainfree, fish protein food is easily available we never have an issue. Can't say enough good things about pre and probiotics too! |
I read so much about problems with and the need to express the anal glands and it's weird I am on my 5th little dog, Lola is the first yorkie mix the others all yorkie but none have had anal glands that seemed to need attention, some might have had their's expressed once or maybe twice but not that I can really recall. Lola will be two next week and never had a problem or a smell. Soooooo I just put her up here on my desk, like the video I got a tissues, squished and squeezed and she looked a little concerned but nothing, nada, not a drop and she poops just fine; decent sized, well formed not runny and with no problems. So am I missing something or do not all dogs need help in that area? LOL I keep on thinking something must be wrong because nothing seems wrong.. |
oh and she gets treats both doggie and in human treats in moderation; stuff like chicken, salmon, little bits of cheese and a carrot. |
Tibbe had to have his done at the vets when I first got him and now I do it very occasionally if he scoots. Once or twice I've taken him up to the vet to do it so he's 5 years now, probably had this done 5 times in his life. |
Dental rinse for dogs will stop the odor.... use it on her butt with a cotton ball. |
Adding fiber (4-6 green beans per meal or as a treat) to the diet can help prevent a buildup. Check her for swelling again every 3-4 days until the problem resolves (by diet or meds), then check (not express unless needed) during bath times (every 1-2 weeks). My Tinkerbell was left at the shelter due to dripping anal glands. Her problem stemmed more from her environment... the family that had her had 6 children, 2-12 years old. At my house with no children, she has never had a problem again. I think the kids terrorized her, as fear can also cause those glands to release. After so much excitement constantly, I believe she just lost the ability to control her glands, or she lived in a state of almost constant fear, as kids tend to get a bit rough with dogs. It is important to check the glands, because if an impaction does occur, the result will be an abcessed anal gland which will require surgery to repair. |
Tia is my first with this problem, so I never guessed what the problem was. I have another yorkie that is a year older (they eat the same food) and have had many, many dogs growing up. We never had to do this. I know of people that do it to their dogs, but it's all new to me. I guess each dog is different..just like people! Tia is just my special, little smelly, scaredy-cat, love-bunny!!! She is loved!!!! |
You can feel a little lump back there if the anal glands are full. I check my Yorkies when they are in the bath. That way I can wash that stink down quickly. Sometimes the dog will do the scoot on the rug and that is a sign they want those things popped. |
Well, I thought I should ask for advice again on this subject. We are off to the vet again this morning because Tia now seems to have an ongoing issue with wanting me to clean my furniture and floor. The smell is so strong!!! OMG Just finished shampooing my couch and carpet. I know it is allergy driven sometimes and she does seem to have a flare up with her allergies (itchy ears and licking paws). What can I do to minimize her glands from leaking like they do? She has had multiple issues since my last post. She is a very good eater and pooper. My older baby poops apprx twice a day, but Tia seems to go a lot more. I feed both girls Nutro Natural Lamb & Rice Small Bites and really want to stick with it. I am going to ask the vet, but thought YT would give us some good suggestions too. Tia would appreciate any help, as she is being banned from furniture and she doesn't know what to do. Mommy feels really bad that she's sitting on the floor! |
The food you are using doesn't have any probiotics- would you consider adding some? If your pup has a yeast overgrowth (itchy ears,etc..) the probiotic can be an amazing tool. |

If everything structurally is sound, I'd recommend you switch her food asap. Some dogs' anal gland problems come straight from the fact that the food they're eating is irritating their GI system, resulting in irritated and full anal glands. I know you say you want to stick w/ Nutro, but if another type of food/protein source/carb source etc would solve the problem, it's worth giving up that food. |
What dog food and/or probiotic would you recommend? We r done with the vet and she was given stuff for allergies. The vet suggested green beans or pumpkin to firm Tia up so her stools will push on her glands properly. I just don't want to disrupt Ally's system because she doesn't have a problem. |
My first thought was anal glands as well. Our vet showed us how to express Katie Scarlett's glands. I now do this every week when we bathe her and always seem to get a little. It is the worst smell ever, but I do it right before we go in the bath, so the smell is not there for too long. I remember the very first time I did them myself, I made the mistake of not holding the paper towel up far enough. It literally squirted in my hair! I know that is disgusting, but just forewarning there. Before expressing, make sure you hold the paper towel up there to catch any. That day, I immediately handed Katie Scarlett to my husband and went to wash my hair. I think I shampoo'ed like 5 times and then shampoo'ed her twice. Oh the joys of learning during this yorkie motherhood! :) Good luck to you! |
