OMG, 2 weeks??? This is so utterly messed up, naive, and selfish. I hope this person learns what is safe and what isn't :(. |

Wow, Breny, it's amazing (and sad) how clueless some people are. To want to take a pup -- any pup, let alone a toy breed -- way before it's weaned is mindboggling. |
I am not bashing people but I think we all love our dogs so why not do what is proven best for them and get them at 12 weeks. One thing about posting is you can't read the tone and such of how stuff if said. Most breeders who allow there puppies to go home before 12 weeks skip steps like genetic testing and stuff and that is very important as anyone who has a pup or dog they have had to watch live with a painful genetic illness its sad to not check for genetic illness and possibly have a pup born that is just going to spend there whole life suffering. Also if they are not keeping the pup until 12 weeks that means they are not part of The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and that is important to me because they know the breed VERY well and what is best for the breed. |
I just can't imagine anyone would let a puppy that young leave his or her mommy. |

Moms wean when the pups start getting those sharp teeth, and this varies, but this isn't only about weaning. Puppies may be weaned at 8 weeks, but this is a critical time for the Yorkies who weighs less than 2 pounds and is prone to hypoglycemia. Breeders believe that the toy breeds do better if left with their mothers and siblings another 4 weeks. Good mothers help with pee pad training and teach bite inhibition. So many Yorkies are rehomed because of these two problems. I don't think we should expect laws to tell us what the best age is for all breeds. For those interested, this link tells why it's important to keep the toy breeds a little longer. Why do Maltese puppies need to be 12 weeks old before going to a new home?? I'm glad Breny you are trying to educate these puppy buyers that this isn't in the best interest of the dog. I think I would tell them that they probably will find a breeder willing to sell them a dog at too young of an age, but they should run in the opposite direction. |

All we can do is educate and then pray for the best. I hope that this dude was just ignorant and not stupid. The ignorant can be fixed - stupid is stupid forever. |

Since it appears or at least feels as if people are out to start a war against me because of my $550.00 purchase of my little AKC girl born 11/19/12 and I pick up 1/14/13 I will just say that I have seen both mom and dad's AKC papers and records for health I will just say that ONE of the names on this list is who I am purchasing her from... I understand the reason and trust me I thought about it a lot and decided that given I know to watch for blood sugar drops and I do have another puppy and maybe a 3rd puppy that will be in the home to guide her in rights and wrongs that maybe my case was a little different then her going to a house with no puppies, I also got her the cuddle dog that has the heartbeat like her mom... I know it is still not the same but I am trying my best to do the best for her given I am getting her early. |

I really did not think were going to approve me since they had already turned down 4 other people that day. |

I'm not trying to take sides here, but I just wanted to say, IMO, a breeder who is a member of the YTCA letting puppies go at 8 weeks bc they are the last litter they are having is a little peculiar to me. It's their last litter ever, what's another 4 weeks? If it were me, I'd hang onto those pups until they were 8 months! Just thinking out loud. |
I do understand the reasoning behind leaving a yorkie until 12 weeks but I also have to say that Laddy who came alas from a puppy mil was brought home at 9 weeks and was so easy to train and adjust here. He does although have anxiety issues when left alone. Kyra we got at 12 weeks and she was harder to house break and stop from nibbling at our fingers. She is now though the most laid back polite well mannered baby we could ask for. I think a lot of breeders are still old school and feel that an 8 week old is the right age to ween. All that being said Amanda I wish you tons of joy with your baby girl. |
