New here need some advice I found a little female yorkie wandering around my yard last week. I have put up flyers, filled a found report with the local animal shelter and posted ads on Craigslist. There have been no calls. My problem is that the animal shelter thinks she might be pregnant so I decided to foster her for 30 days then keep her. I don't know how to tell if she is pregnant or how far along she might be. Any advice is appreciated |
How small is the yorkie you found? I highly recommend you take her to a vet and seek advise from them. It is a huge responsibility delivering and caring for the momma and a litter of pups. If she was bred by a bigger dog then she could very well need a c-section. The gestation period is around 63 days. Usually a vet can palpate for puppies when the female is about 28 days along. Most females will start showing signs of pregnancy when they are 5 weeks along. It really depends on the size of the female and how many puppies she might be carrying. Please keep us updated on how she is doing. |
vet and check for a micro chip, unless the shelter already checked... before you can really say you havent found the owner.....welcome to yt!! we hope to see a pic soon when you have a chance! |
she is 5 lbs I have no idea what could have been breed with her. Her tummy is swollen and her nipples are huge. I haven't taken her in yet because I thought someone would claim her. She is the sweetest thing but it took her 2 days to eat dog food then 2 more before she would eat it off of anything besides my hand she won't leave my side or she panics since the first day. |
and no chip either I will be taking her in soon to the vet. She isn't technically mine for 20 more days but I just couldnt leave her in the shelter |
Definitely get her in to see a vet. Only they can tell you if she's pregnant and IF she is, that pregnancy needs to be checked because if the male dog was a larger breed, it could kill this little girl. Was she scanned for a micro chip yet? If not, please please try that. Thank you for taking care of her!! :) ETA: I just saw your reply on the chip issue. Sorry for repeating the question. I hope you can find her Mommy if her Mommy wants to be found. And, again, you are an angel for taking care of her..thank you! |

she is very lucky that you found her and to know your her guardian angel, she is in safe hands, and I hope you end up keeping her.. I really hope that noone dropped her off because she maybe pregnant... The vet will let you know if she is preg, it could be a false pregancy also. We would love to see pictures of her she sounds soo precious :) |
You NEED to get this girl to a vet ASAP as IF she is PG & it sounds as though she is & very far along. She will have those pups BEFORE 20 days & you NEED to be prepared or you could loose her & the pups. Please get her to a vet ASAP. |
3 Attachment(s) she has an appt for monday, also has a wierd bald spot and scar |
She is very cute & does appear to be PG. Where is the scar ? back, head ? |
on her back a little less than an inch from her neck |
It looks like a deep scrape type scar from the pic. I can't imagine having her & not looking for her when she went missing. What is wrong with people ?:( |
I've had a hard time explaining that to my kids, that sometimes people just can't handle having a dog anymore. It is so hard to imagine someone letting her go out in the cold of winter but if she doesn't get claimed she will be loved, I just hope she wasn't stolen from someone miles away, breed then dumped, and out there is some family thinking their dog is gone forever and stopped looking. |
UGH ! can't even stand the thought of that. But, it sounds like her worries are over now;) AND, Welcome to YT !:) |
Keep us updated after your vet visit |
Wishing you luck with this little one, she seems to have had a hard life. |
she is pretty far along, I agree with lillymae. She is adorable, I hope noone was mean to her, maybe the vet can tell you how she got it.. |
She is certainly a sweet looking little thing. You are def an angel for watching over her. Good luck...I hope everything works out okay. |

Does she seem to have milk in yet? It's hard to tell from the photo but it almost looked like she may have had puppies in the past. She may have escaped from a car that was traveling through. I guess someone may have stolen her. She looks like she was groomed once upon a time. I hope you get things settled. Even if someone claims her after you take her to the vet the owner should be responsible for your bill. An ultrasound can detect babies and their age pretty well. Not all offices have one though. |
I found a vet clinic that has ultrasound in the office so she will be getting one, no milk yet she threw up a couple times tonight and that kind of freaked me out but we got a box ready just in case but she has settled down. I have ads posted in my local craigslist in 2 places, lost and found and pets it is simple as I was advised by the animal shelter it says where I found her and that is a small dog only, no sex or breed was given. I check craigslist about a thousand times a day as well as local newspaper sites and a few other websites I've found, most people are looking for their stolen microchipped dogs so far I have found no one. I am still holding out hope that her mommy will be found as I was just trying to be nice not looking to spend my entire savings which is very small. I did not steal this dog nor did I want the responsibility of a pregnant dog or any dog but sometimes you have to do what's right not what's convienient. |
I think she was lucky to find you...whether her original owner is found or you become her new mommy. You are taking very good care of this little mama :) |
Is the shelter going to take any responsibility for your vet expenses? It seems like they should since you are just fostering. If the vet bills are a problem you may want to talk to the shelter or another rescue about helping out. I don't know how much an ultrasound will cost but it will certainly give you some answers that you need right now. After that initial cost the delivery of the pups would be your next concern. If she does have them all naturally then that would save you the cost of a c-section. Taking care of a litter of puppies is a big responsibility and the expenses can add up but not nearly as much as a c-section would sky rocket your costs. Since she was a stray chances are that the puppies will not be purebred. Someone with a purebred pregnant Yorkie would be searching high and low for that dog. But an accidental mixed litter they may not care about so much. That would be my concern because small dogs tend to have more problems giving birth and when they mate with a larger dog that just increases the chances of trouble. So see what the shelter has to say about helping with the expenses ahead of time. |
In case anyone checks back she had a very good appointment. Her age is estimated to be around 3 and she seems in very good health, only 1 pup which is good and it should be here in a week or so. Can't do anything about vaccinations right now but as soon as she has the pup I will take them both in and mama can get at least a parvo. Her temp is holding at a solid 99.6 It has been for 2 days. She is gonna be just fine. |
Happy to hear she's doing well! :) So, could they tell how big the 1 pup is? Are you going to have the vet deliver the pup? |
The vet said to let her try on her own it is about 2.5 to 3 inches long of she goes into active labor and nothing happens after 30 min then she will need to go in |
Sadly she went into labor and it was stillborn, she is doing well |
Oh no, I'm so sorry the pup didn't make it :( I am very happy mom is doing ok though. Give her special hugs from me! |
Just reading this now...so sorry the pup didn\'t make it, so happy she has you as her guardian angel...do you have a name for her? She looks so sweet. |
