Hi everyone!..and a Question. Hi everyone, I am new to this board so I wanted to say hi and ask a question. I have had dogs before, but never a puppy. I have a Toy Yorkie 3 months (13 weeks old) who up until now was fine. He won't walk on a leash and needs his Rabies Vaccine before interacting with other dogs, but that's not the problem. All day today he has had diarrhea and hasn't eaten since last night. He has had a little water but has slept most of the day. While I know puppies can spend 12 to 18 hours sleeping, I was wondering if this is a problem. He eats dry and moist food and I always leave dry food and water out for him and was just concerned. He is still playfull and energetic so should I really worry now or after another day or 2. Thanks. |
Welcome to YT and congrads on your furbaby!!! Just to let you know some of them are about to get on you about saying you have a toy yorkie. Just to let you know what they are going to say "It is no such thing". Ok now that this is out the way...did you change his food? Has he had all of his other shots? An I think you might want to try feeding him baby food to see if he will eat. You must make him drink water so get a baby syringe and give him the water like that. He might also be stressed out because he is in a new place. Im no expert so Im sure some of the other people will come on and give you more information. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. He will need all his shots before interacting with other dogs not just rabies. Have you changed his food or fed him anything different? If you haven't I would take him in and let the vet check him out because diarrhea can be pretty bad in small puppies because they can go down hill so fast. It can mean a lot of different things from just an upset tummy, gotten into something, worms or something very serious like parvo. |
I am new here too and just got my puppy today, but our breeder said that if they get diarrhea to give them a Tbsp or so of canned pumpkin? I'd get some feedback from others on the board before trying it though because I don't know much about this yet myself. Has anyone else heard of this working? |

I have heard a lot of people on here talking about that and they say it works. I have never tried it but maybe others can tell you a little more about it. |
Tammy, from what I've learned, yes it is ok to feed a little pumpkin, but only in small amounts and only if the diarreah is excessive. |
Welcome! I have heard of canned pumpkin working. We also used Nutracal a lot when Tigger was younger. We have always had a hard time getting him to eat, but when he was a puppy and not eating anything we would give him a tablespoon of Nutracal to make sure he was getting something into his system. The vet said this was good/fine. |

Canned pumpkin can be used to even out dogs systems and can also be given if constipated but with puppies it can mean something else so its best to get them checked out by a vet. |
He has an appointment on the 21st and just ate a little bit, but I may tomorrow if it keeps up. Thanks! |
Hello and welcome. I usually use rice for diarrhea. I would not wait that long to take him to the vet |

I agree, the 21st is too far away especially if he has diarhea and so young. My two just went thru a little stomach issue with diarhea (though they are 4 and 6 years old) and the vet told me not to feed them pumpkin, though I argued the point, he said that is only for constipation, but I did have them on a white rice and low fat cottage cheese diet for 3 days along with medication for diarhea - turns out it was bacterial intestinal bug. However with your baby being so small and you most likely just got him, your vet needs to see him ASAP especially if he has diarhea and not eating. |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby :) If his diarhea persists, he can get dehydrated really quickly. Also, if he's not eating, he can get hypoglycemia. So, PLEASE do not wait until the 21st if this keeps up...if it lasts more than a day, go to the vet. In the mean time, yes, a tad of pumpkin can help and a little nutrical. Hope he's doing better! :) |
A puppy that young can dehydrate very quickly. They decompensate quickly. A puppy may seem fine and then go down hill fast. Has he gotten any people food or dog treats? This type of thing can make a young puppy sick quickly. If he has very loose diarrhea I would get him to the vet right away. It may save you an even more expensive stay if they have to rehydrate him. There are some forms of parasites that can cause diarrhea as well. |
Hi and welcome to YT. I agree that canned pumpkin works but my 2 fears with a puppy are: it could be something more serious than just an upset tummy, or your puppy may get dehydrated. If at all possible may a trip to the vet sooner may help good luck, and i hope he is feeling better soon |
Yorkie not eating Thanks for all the replies. I wouldn't have waited till the 21st if it persisted. Luckily it only lasted 24 hours and he is eating again and was always drinking. I think I spoiled him on the moist puppy food, although he does eat the dry Science Diet for puppies <1 year for small or toy puppies. I prefer he eat the dry food which he does pick at as I see it going down. Thanks again all. |
When your pup has loose stools you always want to eliminate the wet food first. Most people feed canned food because their dog does not like the dry food by it's self. You may want to look into a good quality grain free food. Some of the most common foods contain so many fillers that some dogs just don't want to eat them. |
Any suggestions as what may be good? I hear people talking about Blue, Is that one of them? |
We feed Tigger a mixture of Halo's Spot Stew (Small Breed) and Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Sprinkles. He has a hard time with just hard food, so we mix them together and he really seems to enjoy it. |
I would not mess around with trying to solve the diarrhea myself, your baby is small just take him to the vet to ensure he doesn't have giardia or some other intestinal problem. |
There are many opinions about dog foods. I feed a frozen grain free raw dog food. Here is a link to a site that lists ingredients and rates foods. You can decide for yourself what is best for your dog. At least see what is in the foods and decide what ingredients are helpful and which ones are not. You don't have to agree with the ratings but knowing what is in the foods is a start. Best Dry Grain Free Dog Foods |

I feed her Taste of the Wild but she has had Blue Buffalo, too. When she gets picky about not wanting to eat (which is super rare..she's my little piggie lol), I drizzle just a bit of chicken broth over the kibble (I don't make it mushy, just a light drizzle). Works like a charm here. :) |
That's a great idea! Is the chicken broth fine for puppies too? Gracie is just not interested in kibble unless it falls out of her kong. I worry about her not eating enough. |
Science Diet is what I feed Honey. I put Cesar soft dog food on top of her hard dog food because that is the only way she will eat any hard dog food. I know some people on here dont think it is a good brand but I notice when I took honey off of her other dog food and put her on Science Diet her coat started to get silky and shinny. |

Awesome! I will try that tonight |
Thanks again. I tried Dry Food, Chicken and brown rice in a roll that Petsmart said is good, but no luck. Finally I gave in to the Ceaser (I also tried moist over dry and he just looked at me), but he didn't eat that either, so I got him, got his mouth open and put a little in. Sounds cruel, but after that he ate it all, then some rice and then some of the first food. We had a nice play time, he didn't ignore me on what I did, and he even picked at the Science Diet. I still think I spoiled him on the moist food. The breeder suggested boil a little chicken , says he loves that. Anyway it's just been a month and a half I had him so it still is adjusting to how I feed him. Anyway I love the little ankle biter, he follows me everywhere and even waits at the end of my bed when I leave the room for a few minutes. Ok I rambled enough, I read some other posts and I am glad I found you guys! Thanks once again. ;) Oh, when will my puppy's pic appear like everyone else? I know it's the wrong topis just asking. |
Please read the ingredient lists on your foods. Ceasar is one of the lowest grade foods on the market. Many of the dry foods are mostly grain like corn and rice which is why most many dogs do not want to eat them. You won't find a high grade dog food in the grocery store or department store. |
