new yorkie mom as of 2 hours ago Hi all! So my husband brought home a little yorkie puppy tonight :) :) We have a chihuahua as well so I am familiar with puppies and how to care for them as well as hypoglycemia risks. I plan on searching the forums thoroughly, but for now, can anyone offer any kind of advice that is specific to this breed? He's male, 12 weeks today, and full of energy!!! I don't remember my chi having this much energy lol! He's very very light in weight. I live in Japan so the translation was rough, but they are putting him at 2-4kg (4-6lbs) full grown. What was your pups weight at 12 weeks? Also, his little weiner is wet always. For lack of better words, is he leaking? He has peed already but his little weiner is still wet, even before he peed..Thanks guys for all the help. |
Welcome and congrats on your new puppy:D! I can't help with the weiner issue, as I have two girls, but there are lots of boy owners here that will probably know. Pictures, please?:D |
Puppies do pee a lot. Do you use puppy pads for his potty? I would check the color of the urine and make sure he is hydrated enough. Urine should be almost clear if he is drinking enough. Don't know why he would be wet all the time unless he was laying in a wet area? Most terriers do seem to have almost boundless energy. If he was kept caged a lot before you got him he may also be enjoying the ability to run around for a change. Giving him lots of exercise will help run off some of the energy so he will sleep better. New pups should be checked out by a good reputable vet as soon as possible. It is about impossible to estimate the proper weight for your little guy without knowing his frame and muscle mass. That is something your vet should be able to tell you. A puppy that will mature at 4 to 7 pounds is usually quite small at that age but should not be really thin. Congratulations on your new pet. You can expect him to be full of energy and very smart but a bit stubborn. Terriers can be a real challenge to train if you are not accustomed to their tenacious personality. They are very sensitive and don't respond well to typical training practices. Positive reinforcement works best. Welcome to YT. There is some good reading here. The "sticky" areas of each forum have some good info as does the library. |
Welcome to the world of yorkies! To answer your question of weight @ 12 weeks. Teeka weighed 1 lb. 14 oz. Have fun with your new little boy! :welcome4: |
Hello everyone! Im a new yorkie owner also. Her name is Reese. She is 1-1/2 yrs old and weighs 5 ish pounds. She is very well trained. she misses her family terribly. I feel so bad for her. what can i do to make her feel welcome. besides the normal. oh and did i mention i picked her up saturday and realized sunday morning she is in heat. |
:D Hello, welcome, and congratulations! :D I'm a bit rubbish with all the weight business....but I do know about weiners (or winkies, as I call them !!!) :D I must admit - Harry has never had a 'leaky one'....but then again I always dry his feet and his winkie when he comes in from the garden....and I also wipe his bottom, just in case... Enjoy every moment of your new little one! Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |

Welcome to YorkieTalk and congrats on your new pup! I have a girl so not very good with the boy stuff but could the hair just be wet from him going potty? He maybe sneaking little potty breaks every where. When we first go Callie is was so hard to tell if she was squatting in the grass or sitting. Callie's down there hair will stay wet for a little bit after she pees. |
congrats on your new addition!! he sounds like a ball of fire. hehe. sorry i never noticed is cedrics peep was always wet...i do keep his hair trimmed but maybe like suggested above just be sure hes not marking... |

I agree on the wet boy part - perhaps the puppy is just peeing a lot and the hair on his boy part doesn't have a chance to dry between pee pees? |
Hi hun congrats on your new baby sammis winkie is rather hairy and if i dont dry it he will stay wet :) his weight at 12 weeks was just over 4lbs and at 6 months he is 5.5lbs he is a tiny bundle of energy :welcome4: :D |
Welcome to YT and congrats on your new little one! :) |
Hi and welcome to YT. We have a 2 1/2 year old yorkie as well as a 10 week old chihuahua Our Yorkie Zach weighed about 3 lbs when he was 12 weeks old. He now weighs 10 lbs. As far as his wee is concerned Zach's is on the damp side unless we wipe it down. Sometimes even our chi's wee is a little damp because he always peeing I am almost sure your yorkie is not leaking. |
Congrats on your new baby, I'm sure he will be SO much fun! The "winkie" talk almost made me spit out my morning coffee - ah ha ha ha haaaaaaaaa. :D P-Nut's is often wet and I always use wipes after he comes back in - on his feet and his "sanitary areas" as my groomer calls the winkie and tushie. I think the dampness is just a boy thing due to the hair in the area. I remember wondering about it when I first got him. To take it a little further, right now, his aim is terrible because of a recent leg surgery and he keeps peeing all over his front leg. I practically have to bathe him after he goes pee now. |
Congratulations on becoming a Yorkie mommy.... I know how exciting it can be (new mommy as well), so I'll just say "simply enjoy the ride"... lol..... Welcome to YT also.... :D nice to meet ya! |
I am enjoying the ride so far, but not enjoying being up at 4:30am! lol. I am going to take him to the vet either Thurs or Fri to make sure all is well. The wet weiner thing makes sense..it probably just needs to be dried, but it is seeming like each time I pick him up he is leaking a little. When I took him out of the pen this morning and put him on the rug there was a trail of urine. Poor little thing. Hoping it's just excitement! He is nothing like my chihuahua was when she was 12 weeks, this is a new thing for me. and for him :) Like someone above said, he was in a cage before we got him so I'm sure he's loving being able to run around, he sure is a handfull! I will post pics this afternoon. Thank you all for the help. |

I will have the vet look in to it. He's not acting as silly this morning. He's still exploring and checking things out but he seems to be more interested in climbing on me. So I'll lay on the floor with him just loving on him and making him feel secure in his new environment. So the breeder sent him home with some Eukanoba puppy food. My chihuahua eats ZiwiPeak and raw, but while Domo is a puppy I will have him on kibble. I plan to ween him on to wellness puppy. Just running that by, I am clueless on yorkies so I want to make sure I'm doing it all right. I'm anxious to get to the vet. I want to make sure he's perfectly healthy. He's JKC which is nice, but JKC or not, I want him to be healthy and loved. I read through the puppy tabs on the site. So I need to get a bristle brush and comb? Can someone post a pic of what they use so I have an idea, please. My chihuahua, Miya, and Domo are doing great! They are both wanting to play with each other so I'm very excited about that. Housebreaking question-I will train him to use pads 100%, but also will encourage him to go outside when we go on walks. This is what I do with my chihuahua, however, this is my first time crate training. We have a large octagon playpen which is his "crate". Pee pads are in there so he can relieve himself as needed. So my question is, eventually I want him to use the same pee pad as my chihuahua, which is in the kitchen. When he has an accident, should I be encouraging him to use the pad in his playpen or in the kitchen? I don't want to give him too many options as I made that mistake when my chihuahua was a puppy. |

I have read about ZiwiPeak and it sounds like a good food. Have considered it for my girl. She is on a commercial frozen raw right now. Of course your pup will need to be changed over slowly to whatever you decide on. I trained my Gracie to two different pee pad sites. One near the door and one in the bedroom because she slept with me at night. (The first couple of months I had pads every where she went!) When she was about 7 months old I decided to get rid of the bedroom pad because she was doing so well, but found she would pee where it once was. I had to put it back and slowly move it (about a foot per week) until I got it to where the other one was and then eventually eliminated it. They do form habits when young so you need to choose your site carefully. They can regress even when you think they have it perfectly under control. I found that changes in our home would sometimes cause her to have pee accidents during the first year. She is good about peeing outside when I take her for walks and does not have accidents anymore. |
I know what you mean about the regression. We had a heck of a summer with Miya (our chi). We lived in VA and visited my parents in FL for the summer, then moved to Japan in October..She's had quite the few months. We had to start from scratch with training. It was my fault but she's back on track now :) No more traveling for us like that. I am using Happy Tails Oatmeal Shampoo and Fur Butter Conditioner for Miya. Could I use the same for Domo, being a yorkie? I read about the Yorkie sheen and shine or whatever it is, I might try that too. I am really happy with ZiwiPeak. It's been great for Miya and she loves it. When Domo is old enough, he will eat it too. |
Welcome. I noticed when Bailey was much younger he seemed to pee quite a bit. But he didn't pee as much each time as he does now (like a little horse). Who knows. |
I've never had 2 dogs that used pee pads, but I just wanted to say that my Mandie will not even pee and poop on the same pad so you might have a hard time getting both dogs to use the same pad. I'm not sure, but just throwing that out there. |
Congratulations and Welcome! Would love to see some photos of your two! |
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c6...ublef/Domo.jpg Here is a video of Domo and Miya wrestling. Miya is totally ignoring me lol but I think Domo can hold his own. Wait until he gets bigger and runs circles around her! |

Welcome to YT. May I suggest you start your own thread as your question is likely to get lost, in all the responders to the original posters question. If she is in heat, she needs to be protected from mating at all times for the next 4wks. That means you never let her out unattended, and if you have un neutered males at home you must crate and rotate. Belly bands or diapers are not birth control! Try to keep her busy. Get her interested in games or toys. Talk with her a lot. If she will let you; hold and cuddle her. You will need to be very careful with walking her as she is in heat. GL with your gal |
Congrat's on your two beauties. They are really adorable. Bye the way welcome to Y T. sure you will enjoy it here. there are quite a few very helpful people on here. You learn from the best by reading this forum. And Happy Holiday's. Anne/Luci:p |
Thank you. I am on chihuahua-people.com and have learned SO MUCH. I was ecstatic to see there was a Yorkietalk as well! So, Domo has a little nub of a tail. Is this normal, will it grow? |
