Won't move in nis new coat Help I got Wallee a beautiful German made coat for the cold weather up here in Canada and when I put it on him, he just freezes and refuses to walk in it. I was wearing a buckskin coat on him and although he would sometimes quit walking, he at least walked. When I had him out for a while today with that coat on he still shivered so I bit the bullet and bought him an expensive warm coat. How do I get him used to wearing it as I keep telling him he has no choice in the cold days to come. |
try enticing him to you with tasty treats...have him walk to you for them over and over and he'll eventually figure out he can actually walk in it |
My female Japanese Chin, Yoshi, does the same thing. Stands still as a stick till you take the clothes off her. Louise |
That's usually a sign of the clothes not fitting well. If the material is too stiff and they don't feel like they can move right, they will just stand there. If you can't tempt him with a little piece of food, I'd take the coat back. |

I bought a coat for my schipperke and he Would not move. I figured he was just Really mad until I took a closer look and Realized he literally could not move... LOL |
It must be something is making him uncomfortable. It may be too thick or cumbersome for him. Maybe too tight some where. If he is uncomfortable he is not going to want to walk in it. Are you sure the fit is right? |
My dog Winston won't walk in clothes either. He stands there with his legs in funny positions and acts frozen. After ignoring him for a while, he started to act normally. Some need to get used to clothing. Of course check the fit, and if it is ok, then reward him for putting it on and walking in it. |

Does he wear t-shirts or sweaters OK? If he doesn't usually wear them, I'd start having him wear a t-shirt inside while inside. Get him used to clothes other than just wearing a coat to go outside. |
Oh dear! :) I have a mental image of all these Littlies in their beautiful coats not moving an inch.....:D I'm afraid Harry won't wear A THING, and I've tried and tried. Not only will he not move, he'll suddenly rush up the stairs with whatever on, and then 30 seconds later he'll rush back down NAKED!!!!! :D He can get undressed quicker than I can!!! Hope you manage to sort it out, good luck! Sally + Harry x |
Remy won't move in her raincoat. Or if I put a hat on her. Dresses and t shirts are fine. So, like others have said, maybe start out with lighter clothing? My dd was visiting with her Zohie (a corkie...we think) and she would undress Remy:eek::rolleyes: She would bite and put on dresses or shirts until she pulled them over Remy's head. Funny |
It seems that Wallee just doesn't like any clothing. No matter what I put on him he just seems to want to stand there. I did get him used to the other coat, (the soft one) but even wearing that he sometimes stops and I have to pet him and reassure him that it is ok befor he starts moving again. I think I am going to try putting some clothing on every day till he gets used to it. Even the little elf suit I just had on him in the pic he won't move in. He just stands and whines. I tried his favourite treats and he just looks at me with pathetic eyes..lol..I think he just doesn't like the feel of clothing at all. The problem is, the winters here can get so very cold. I don't want him outside walking and shivering. :( |

My Murfee turns into a statue when I put clothing on him. He won't even turn his head. |
Morgan does the same thing but i still put on his sweater when it gets really cold here in Montana |
ok..going to try the tshirt thing as everyone suggests...like I said, I think it's just an aversion to wearing anything but I am def going to really check out the fit of the coat, since I paid 100.00 for it...but it seems to fit ok. I have so much to learn about these little terriers it seems. |

LoL I had a pair of PJs for waffles with Velcro on the back I'd put them on she'd fall over. Every time. I need to get rid of them now that I think about it. |
Lol this thread makes me laugh..imagining the Yorkies doing what they do is funny. Good thing Pao loves clothes. He knows he is cute in clothes and keeps him warm. He actually loves the clothes more than being cold so that is good :aimeeyork. Start young and it will be easier I think. I got Pao end of September so it was getting cold so we started when he was a puppy. |
2 Attachment(s) Brody and Mia love clothes, so no issues there. I got them 3 months apart when Brody was 14 months old and later when both Brody and Mia were 17 months old. Mia's previous owner said she didn't really like clothe, even though the owner would dress her anyway as a puppy. Brody never wore clothes until 12/23/11 and loved them from the first moment. You might try putting the coat on him when it doesn't matter how he reacts...make sure it is not so warm indoors that he will get too hot, but put the coat on while you sit and watch TV, read, etc., or at his nap or bedtime to give him time to adjust to the feel of it and so he can 'break it in' a bit. You can continue to walk him in the other coat with a soft T or sweater under it for warmth. Brody and Mia have warm fleece hoodies that they even love to sleep in...which is another option. In the attached photo, they are very dirty kiddos, having been playing in the dirt, grass and leaves, digging holes and knocking each other down in all that dirt, but you can see the (dirty) hoodies. :p |
Zach and Zoe were okay with clothing but we had a problem with Oliver and Basil our two shih tzus. They wouldn't move when we dressed them. Now they are much better. Now we have Bisquit who is only 10 weeks old and he screams when we dress him. So I guess it's back to the drawing board. |
this thread is so funny, Nancy hopefully you did not play that music while trying to teach Joey to walk in his costume, LOL because that would surely spook the crap out of me:D Lola could care less about clothes, if a toy is present she will play naked or in a formal gown. |

ROFLMAO...Brody, too! He is a toy hoarder and will play naked for sure....not sure about the formal gown...he has rejected Mia's clothes (sweaters) in the past. ;):p:D |

Cute Tshirt!!! |
LOL, I know how you feel. I bought this awesomely stylish leopard coat for our girl, Pfeiffer, and she too got The Coat Paralysis Syndrome. She eventually got the hang of it, and treats always help! |

:thumbup: Some of mine will just stand there and look at me with that look we all know....if I ignore them for a while, they eventually will walk around....then they get used to it (sweaters and pj's)and dont want it off! |
Modelling the coat 1 Attachment(s) Here's a pic of Wallee in the new coat. I checked and checked it over, no tags, fits well (I can fit my fingers under it) and it is very soft. But..check the look on his face.....hehehe....brutal... |
