My Zoe is getting Spayed, any suggestions So the day is quickly approaching, I have to get my baby spayed this Friday. She was supposed to do it 3 months ago and the little stinker went into heat the week of her appointment. So she is now 11 months old which I am sort of glad about. She weighs 5 1/2 pounds so isn't tiny anymore. However she is getting 4 baby teeth pulled and micro chipped too. They will be doing the full blood workup and using laser, I am still a nervous wreck. If you were to give me advice, what is the best piece of advice you would give me? I do plan to sit at the vet all day during her surgery as well as take her home that night. Also how long does the actual surgery usually take? |
Think positive and keep busy. I was a nervous wreck just like you but I went to work on the day of Brandi's spay and it kept my mind occupied. Otherwise I would have went crazy. After the surgery, the vet gave me some pain meds. She was groggy the first day but by the second day, I couldn't keep her still, except for a little soreness she was back to normal. |

Sounds like you have all the bases covered. I have boys, so slightly different. I think people with girls usually recommend a onesie to wear to keep the pup from licking the surgical site. Best wishes to your little one. Definitely keep busy while she is at the vet. Makes the times go faster. |
I'm sure she'll do just fine. My only advice is for post-op stuff. When I spayed Mandie, the following day - she was shaking and hurting when when she tried to poo. She never stopped pooping but it was hurting her. So, I would suggest to keep an eye on that...if she seems to be having problems, you could give her a tiny bit of mineral oil on her food (and even rub a little on her bum). Oh, and she might not want to drink at first...I used a dropper and gave her water every so often and then she started drinking on her own again by the next day :) |
Oh the dropper for water is a great idea, I hadn't thought about that one. I do plan to get her onsies to wear, any idea on the size I should purchase for 5 1/2 pounds? I plan to take my computer to the vet and sit throughout the day, just in case something goes wrong I want to be there. I know the day will go slow, but I just can't stand the thought of dropping her off under such scary circumstances. I just keep looking at her today and holding her, and having all these what if questions going through my miind. She is the only yorkie I have ever had and I can't believe how I have fallen in love with her. I never knew that it was possible. |

For the onezie - Mya was just over 7 pounds when she was spayed, and I bought her size 3 months - only because she is VERY long and premie wouldn't have been long enough. The night of she was very sore.. she curled up with me and just shook like a leaf, to the point that I called the vet as I was so concerned.. By the next day she was ok, still sore but mostly back to normal. I sent Oliver to my friends house for the night so I could solely focus on Mya. Having mommy all to herself helped. When she couldn't be on my lap, she was in her crate, to keep her calm. Good luck! She'll be fine, sounds like you're well prepared :) |
My Zoe shakes so easy so iam a little afraid of that. I always feel so sorry for her even if it is because she is a little cold and I know she is okay. I hate it when she shakes. I guess I will ensure the house is real warm and have warm blankets for her. I am starting to get scared. I am planning to bring her home that night, but how will I know if something is wrong or if it is just a normal reaction to the surgery. Oh why do they have to go through this. I just need to stay strong or I will talk myself I to canceling. |
Kyra just had hers done on Monday we couldn't find a onsie small enough so she is wearing her little doggie pants backwards lol. It looks funny but it works to stop her licking and this way she doesn't have to wear an e collar. She woke up today still shaking a little from the pain so I gave her her pill and she is doing great now. The biggest problem is keeping her from romping with Laddy. |
Trust your vet with your precious Yorkie. So many dogs are spayed and vets are experts at this. If you have chosen a vet wisely, not to worry. Your little one will come through this just fine. There is pain meds they give to keep her comfortable. Let us know as I will say a little prayer for a safe spay. |

If Zoe is about 5 1/2 pounds, the size newborn should fit her, if not then go the next size up which would be 0-3 months. If you can measure her length and while she is at the Vet run to Wal Mart with the tape measure in hand and check out the size of them. |

Glad to hear she is doing great. |

I have never heard of using a onesie to cover the incision. That is a great idea! I will forsure get one for Teeka, when it is time to have her spayed. Thanks for the info! :thumbs up |
Check target also |
I got 0 to 3 month onsies, have washed them and tried them on and they fit Zoe perfectly. So I am now the night before and so upset, I just can't imagine turning her over to them, I wish so bad I could be in the operating room with her. I am going to stay at the vet and as soon as she comes to the vet said I could be there next to her. I will sit by her all day until the vet thinks she is good enough to come home. But seriously how do you take your baby for something like this? I don't want to do it at all, I am sitting here thinking of all the what ifs. I can't imagine life without her. |
I have gone through this and know how scary this is for you. My heart and prayers will be with you and Zoe tomorrow. She may cry a bit, but Zoe is going to be fine. I'm sure the doctor will give her pain medication and that you will be there to give Zoe all of the love and care that she needs. |

The fact that you are going to stay there will help you. I'm that annoying mom that calls the vet's office every hour to check on things... |
Well it's over and went better than I expected. My vet was awesome. When I got there at 7 am they actually gave me my own room for Zoe and I right next to the surgery room with a sofa. They took her to draw her blood and brought her back to me while they ran the tests. Once we got the results of that the vet took her to give her a shot to make her sleepy and brought her back again until they were ready for surgery. She was asleep in my arms when the vet took her from me. She came back in about 40 minutes later and said the spay was over and she was ready to pull her baby teeth. In another 30 minutes the vet brought her to me to hold while she woke up. I got to sit and just hold her for the next 5 hours while she came to. The vet would come in the room every 15 mi it's or so, take her temperature and check on her. Once her fluids were done in her IV bag she decided I could take her home. She is doing so well tonight. Just sleeping on my lap. I would certainly advise every owner to insist on staying with their baby and holding them after surgery instead of just putting the. In a kennel. She only had to be away from me for about an hour all day. It was awesome and I love my vet! And I love my Zoe! |

I had never considered it before either, but the closer it got the more I realized she has never been in the hands of a stranger, she has never been alone in a strange place, and she hates being in a kennel. That combinations seems very stressful. When I called last week to make last minute arrangements I told the receptionist what I was going to do and she acted like I was out of my mind and commented that it wasn't normal practice to stay and it could be all day. I then asked her if she had children and when she said yes, I asked her if she would take her 2 year old child to the hospital, drop her off at the door and pick her up that night:). That sort of got her. I usually go with the flow and don't push the rules, but when it comes to my baby that is a different story, I figure since I am paying them to work for me I can demand whatever I want. So glad I did and I would recommend any one with a baby to not just do whatever they tell you, but to fight for your baby. The vet was amazed at how well she did and how well she woke up, hmmmm could it have something to do with the fact that she was in her mommas hands, hearing her mommas voice as she was waking up instead of being in a hard, cold, kennel? |
What a great experience! So glad all is going well. I'm going to PM you for the name of your vet. I know the clinic and they have a great reputation. Will keep you and Zoe in our prayers. |
Thinking about you and your baby. How is Zoe feeling? It's so difficult to see our little ones in pain or sick. I hope that Zoe is feeling better really soon. I'm glad that you waited a little longer to get her spayed. From what I have learned, it is better for them to go through their first heat. I worried so much when one of my little girls went into heat before we got her spayed. We were waiting for the teeth to come in so that we could extract her baby teeth at the same time, and she went into heat earlier than expected. Ashley lived just a month shy of seventeen. Please give Zoe some extra kisses from Katie and me. |
Thank you everyone for the well wishes! She is doing very good today, resting a lot but good. This evening she even brought me a toy and wanted me to play with her. She is such an angel! |
