Need to vent... Today my friend and I were sitting in the student union building, killing time in between classes, when some of her other friends came to join us. We were all having a nice chat and I was telling my friend about Henri when one of her friends asked me about him, so naturally I pull up a pic on my phone to show everyone. When the girl looks at the pic she says point blank "That's a Silky" and I say politely "No, he is a Yorkie, but Yorkies were used to create the Silky breed so its a simple mistake" then she says "No, that is a Silky" the conversation goes like this: Her: That's a Silky Me: No, he is a Yorkie, but Yorkies were used to create the Silky breed so its a simple mistake Her: No, that is a Silky Me: No, he is a Yorkie, his parents were Yorkies and Silkies are different looking and usually bigger Her: He is a small silky At that point I was getting angry and said something I will not repeat on here, but in my head I just kept thinking that I'm about to knock this girl's head off. She finally left, probably because I was ready to beat her to a pulp (yeah I know its wrong but how dare she tell me what MY dog is). My friend apologized in her place but I'm still fuming about it! |
I wouldn't worry too much about what other people think. Who is she, the expert of all dog breeds? Come on... Obviously she thinks a lot of herself. You know what your dog is and that's all that matters! :D |
Well I think Silkies are very cute too... :) |
I would have been irritated too...At least you can come vent here! My great aunt kept insisting to everyone that I had some mix of a dog b/c there was no way he was a yorkie. Her daughter had a yorkie and it was tiny with kind of wirey hair so she thought thats how all of them looked. I was so frustrated b/c I tried to explain that he was a yorkie but had different hair and a manly body but ya..she still tells my grandma that I paid way to much for a mutt..ughhh i can't abuse her but I did deny her a piece of pie when I made some for the family lol Some people just like to feel like they're right and even when they realize they are wrong, they will never admit it. |

They are I have two yorkies and my oldest daughter has a silky And they all are adorable. I understand being frustrated tho. |
I can understand your frustration and I agree Silkies are adorable too. I get irritated when people insist Georgie is a teacup Yorkie like he's a different breed of Yorkie. I am so over that convo! Honestly I just can't stand people who offer their opinions when no one asks lol |
Thanks everyone, it is nice to be able to come on here and vent to people who understand :) |
AAAAAARGH!!!!! :D You wouldn't believe the 'conversations' I've had with people about 'what Harry is'.....!!!!! When we first got him, I got so peed off about it that eventually I carried his Pedigree round in my bag! :D Like we have to explain anything to anyone?!!? Rather than do all that now, I just tell them that he's a tiny Bearded Collie puppy..... :D Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
Well, don't feel alone. I have seen several threads here by people who have been confronted with the same type of conversation. There are very few people in this country that have a lot of knowledge about purebred dogs. Most get their information from what they have seen in a pet store or some family pet. I don't have much knowledge about the Silky but from what I have read they do have some ancestors in common with the Yorkie. They are both terriers and both very cute. The person who argued with you obviously had no knowledge base that she was operating from since she gave you no facts about how she based her opinion. There are a lot of people like that in the world. They decide on a view point and stick with it without any regard to real information. Don't try to confuse people like that with facts because they don't want to be bothered with such details.:) |
I tell people mine are the latest toy animatronics from Japan. Lifetime lithium batteries, solar powdered and everything. Cause, yeah, I always get the "Are they real"? questions... Like, do you not see what's in front of your face? |
LOL, i love when people try to argue with me.. about yorkies and silkies.. hubby just roll his eyes smiles and walks away... and when I am done educating the public, he always ask me the same question... did you win? LOL, people see what they want to see, and that is that you can have all the knowledge in the world and some people will never accept it.. that is just human nature.. a silky is a product of years of selecting breeding the yorkshire terrier and the australian terrier, that is why they look alike so much, in a good line we still get some throw backs, like a little wire hair baby here and there or a smaller silky, I have one of those right now, I have a girl that at 6 weeks is only 2 pounds where her sisters are a bit above 3 which is the right weight for a silky baby at that age.. and like all terriers they are very vocal and stubburn.. and yes, usually I win when I tell them I breed and show Silky terriers...LOL |
Some people are just ignorant and rude:rolleyes: How's this one? My mother in law insists that my two CAN'T be "real yorkies" because their hair isn't long:confused: Um, it's called a haircut, but even explaining that to her, and her personally witnessing me taking them to the groomer every two weeks, did nothing to dissuade her from her ignorant opinion:laugh: I give up:D!!!! Don't let one "expert" bug you:D |
One day I took Toby to petland with me. The girl working there asked me what breed he was, and I said yorkie. She looked at the ones they had and then looked at Toby and said he is not a yorkie. I was so mad, but then I thought I am glad he doesn't look like any of yours. If I had though quick enough I would have said no yours are the ones that are not true yorkies. I have just lerned to ignore people. I know that Toby is a purebred, and that is all that matters. I understand you getting upset though. |

Everyone does the SAME thing to me when I take Clyde anywhere. I know for a fact that Clyde is a purebred YORKSHIRE TERRIER, however whenever I take him out everyone always tries to tell me that he is not. I just think it myself, I think I know my own dog breed? Everyone always tries to tell me that Clyde is a silkie or a west highland terrier mix, but I always just brush it off. Let people think what they want because people be stubborn! I just let them think what they want lol. At least I know that he is a Yorkie! |
Hi Everyone: you should try having a Biewer Yorkie...omg..everyone always asks what "mix" he is...when I tell them he is a yorkie they just look at me like I am lying..I tell them..Google it.. B I E W E R yorkie..lol |
Ugh! I get this all the time. I have a biewer and people always tell me hes a morkie...nope, not a mix!! |

First, Why would you ask that? Second, Why would I carry around a stuffed animal or worse, a dead animal???!! |

Yeah I know I shouldn't let it bug me, but I've never had someone argue with me on what my own dog is, like I don't know even though I've had him since he was 9 weeks old! Quote:

My neighbor has a friend that has been staying with her. I had Yumi out in the back yard, and she asked if she was a silky. I told her she was a yorkie, and she said "Oh, well my sister breeds dogs like that." "I was thinking apparently not if you think shes a silky...I just said "oh cool..." I couldn't care less that she thought she was a silky but it was mildly annoying that she acted like she knew what she was talking about. One of those things where she isn't going to actually say anything, but you can tell she thinks she knows better than you... I can totally understand confusing the 2 breeds. I'm not sure I would know by looking at a silky that it was a silky, but if the owner told me it was I would assume they knew wth they were talking about :P |
