But you can change stuff by calling or faxing the, but certain changes, they charge you a fee.

That's exactly what I was trying to say. I wish Avid would let you change stuff on the website for free instead of how they do it now. You call and they charge you.

Home Again let me update the info online but show the "renew registration" that is misleading. At least I can see my account with Home Again. And they do not charge the information change fee.
I do not like that I can not "see" the Avid information or the charge for changes. He said it was not available online at this time to see my information.
That seems silly!

Weren't you told up front it would cost to change information on the website or is this something they are just springing on everybody recently? Because I kind of think if you knew there would be down-the-line charges for little things like updating a website, most would have gone with another chip company. I know I would have if Home Again had mentioned that on their initial registration or the vet had told me. The vet said there would be no charges except the one-time fee for maintaining current information online and so did the form. I believe I would complain if nobody knew up front they were going to have to pay to just try to keep information current online on your dogs.

I wonder if you can get them chipped with 2 different companies?
I know it would be over kill but it seems like Avid is not on the ball and that is who Mickey is chipped with.

I think somebody said that is not a good idea though I don't know the reasons why.

I may be changing my chip compny....because it sure isnt like I went with Avid because they were cheaper!!! These darn things cost a small fortune!! What seemed easier was the "after" care....I paid the registration fee and that took care of everything...no annual fees for the people to forget or worry with....That is the part I liked...I didnt want my owners to have to do anything with registering the chip...no additional fees, that maybe they would opt not to do, or forget to do, etc....I am going to do more research on all these chips and see what is the best for what I am trying to get covered.

In my case Uni was sold to me w a chip already implanted, so there was no choice for me. But yes I was told about the update fee when I finally did register her. At that point, what can u do? Say no thanks I'll go w another company? The chip was already implanted before I bought her. I guess they are counting on people saying, oh its just $6. Extra money for them. But I don't see how someone going in the database and changing a phone number or something can be $6 worth of manhours.

In your case you had no choice but was just wondering if they did make the update charge fee known up front to those who pay for the implants. $6.00 to make a website change is ridiculous!!! Talk about nickel and diming people!

My vet didn't even talk to me about chip options. I didn't know there were so many until AFTER Kaji's neuter, which is when I had him chipped. She never told me she would be using Home Again, never told me about the website, never said anything other than "OK, it'll be $X" when I asked her to chip Kaji at the time of the neuter. It's a little sad, but not all vets or breeders help us make a informed decision. I'm still confused about the renewal fee with Home Again. I know of one person who pays it every year. I've never paid but the chip is still good and I know Home Again will call me if Kaji gets lost. How do I know? I have the chip tag on my car keys. Tibbe has Home Again and the one-time implant fee buys the chip and maintaining current contact/identifying and vet clinic data online. For an extra fee each year(which IMO Home Again makes sound mandatory), you may buy other services such as lost pet insurance and so forth. I did that for a year or two but stopped. But I can access/update our data online anytime and so far his chip scan shows he's active, etc.

You do not have to upgrade the Home Again and pay a fee every year to have your dog protected. The fee is for extra perks but has NOTHING to do with getting you're pet returned to you safely if found.
What you got when you originally put the chip in is good for life. :thumbup: I called and asked.

I had Gracie chipped when she was spayed. I think it was about a $45.00 fee. The vet registered it with the company and I was sent info on how to put further info online. Her chip has remained in place. No additional fees. I was concerned because she was a skinny little thing when it was placed. At first I could feel it in her skin with my fingers but as she gained some weight I could not feel it anymore. It was found easily with the scan. I was concerned about other agencies, like a shelter, being able to find it after seeing people stating that they were hard to find.

It is my intent that Gracie never be away from home for any reason but anyone who has been on YT for any length of time should realize many of the unexpected events that can happen in life. Just one careless maintainance person or a break in could mean your pet is lost. I have done everything in my power to prevent that but I think chipping your pet is the responsible thing to do in an age where you just don't always have control over all circumstances. Just the freak storms that have been happening for the past few years should put people on alert.

I thought I understood microchipping until I read this thread.

So let me ask, the microchip is not directly tied to the service you use correct? I have a Trovan chip but I could register that chip with Avid correct? I thought the service and the chip type were directly related.

Me being the worrier that I am will go ahead and register Sophie Kate with every service if that is the case.

Ok, I read a bit on pet webmd and called my vet, he uses HomeAgain and charges $55.00.

I visited the HomeAgain website and liked the information I read about the services and especially that you can place an alert if our baby is lost/stolen (god forbid :()

I also did a search for vet on their website and was happy to see several pages worth of vets that provided the service.

When I adopted Willow she was chipped by the Rescue Group, and come to find out she was also chipped by the breeder who had turned her over to the Rescue Group. So, Willow has two chips in her.

In doing research on the chips I came across some independent sites that register your chip information. I am considering registering Buster with these additional sites. In doing Bengi research I was saddened by the number of missing Yorkies. I am thinking the more info out there the better. I agree with Capt Noonie that the Home Again site is much better than the Avid. Buster has an Avid chip all ready and I don't think I want to subject him to another implant. I found one free one Microchip Registry | Free Pet Microchipping Registration | Found Animals and one for a yearly or lifetime fee helpmefindMYPET&#153 Register Your Pet Do you think it is wiser to be registered at multiple places?

It seems the right thing to do. Wonder what those that work with shelters and for vets on YT have to say. I can't see a downside right now. Waiting to see what everybody thinks and if there would be some reason not to. Course all sites would need to be kept current with any changes, etc. but it sounds reasonable to me that the more the better.

It's not a website change. They don't offer that option. You have to call or fax it in. But agree, I still think it's nickel and diming people.

I have Joey's chip registered with the AKC, their lost and found program had a onetime fee, and actually help contact vets and shelters in whatever city he's lost in. This can be helpful, especially if you’re traveling and your dog gets loose. I wouldn't register in too many places, some of these places won't be around in a year and others are doing it just to get personal information from you, i.e. a name, address and phone number. You might be bombarded with junk mail and unwanted calls.

My foster Katie ended up with two chips also. She already had one, but our rescue group had to implant one as well.

So is that the reason they charge, because they require all of that - someone to handle the fax, emails and enter the info? The more people that handle something, seems like the more chance for error or missing somthing. I'd rather do it myself free any time I want to add or change something such as the picture or change his vet info.

I was wondering what the larger shelters are using. Our local shelter has a scanner that they say can detect "most" chips. Of course they are always running low on funds so they are not looking to purchase a new one.
It just seems that with so many different kinds of chips that there should be some consistency so if a person moves to another area they don't have to worry about the chip being valid there.

I wonder,too. Maybe someone who works/volunteers will post.

There should be some assurance our chips are scannable, workable throughout this country.

I do know that the shelters in my area scan when a dog is brought in.

I had to go to the Shelter on Saturday and check on a male Yorkie that was listed. One of adopters, that adopted a Yorkie he has been missing for over a month now. We check every day. This particular shelter had just put this Yorkie on their web site, so I flew right over there. It wasn't the one we are looking for. However this poor baby did have a Micro Chip (Home Again) when they scanned it. The shelter called and the owner had not registered their information. I pray that baby get reunited with his owner.
I also pray every day that we find our adopters baby. He is Micro Chipped (Avid) We have called and listed him as lost and they (Avid) have at least 4 contacts for our group if he is found. We believe that someone has taken him and is just keeping him. This is so very sad.

That is what I was worrying about is having to much personal info out there. I was amazed by the help find my pet link using zip code certainly gets your lost dog info out there.helpmefindMYPET&#153 - View Missing Pets In Your Area I just noticed when I tried my parents zip code it listed dogs missing since 2009
