Teddy is soft coat. I always assumed it was because he is part maltese, I didn't realize yorkies could also have the soft coat. I have keep his hair in puppy coat because always gets matted from playing outside |
2 Attachment(s) Yay for cotton coats! It's great to see so many of them. When I got Molli as a puppy I had no idea her coat was diffrent, from what I gathered I don't think you can really tell if they are a cotton coat until after 6 months old because before then they still have a puppy coat which is often fluffier than normal. As far as I know I think the hair is always black, I think it may lighten a litte (Molli's seems lighter near her legs) but it will never turn the "blue" color it is supposed to. I have two uniquely colored yorkies now so I am loving it.The matting up is hard to deal with sometimes but I keep her short most of the year and use a detangler on her. Small price to pay to have your dog look like a puppy forever :) Here is a pic of Molli as a baby and then one of what she looks like now (she just turned 2yrs) |

3 Attachment(s) Wallee is definitely a cotton coat..hehehe...he gets so fluffy that he looks like a Teddy Bear...unfortunately the groomer decided to shave him down last time as I asked her to shave his real problem areas (under his arms are brutal). We got rid of the fluffiest part which was his puppy coat, but as it grows back in I can see some real curl going on..lol |

I am pretty sure I'm going to be wrong eventually, so far I have only been right by the luck of the draw, lol. Basically, I studied pictures of puppies from reputable breeders, and I studied pictures of puppies from.. well.. less than reputable breeders, lol. Aside from half the puppies from the latter looking like they were mixed seven ways from Sunday, their pups always were more fluffy and more dull looking than the puppies of the former. The exception usually being when the pet bred puppies were AKC registered, though some of them were cotton coats too. Without exception, show breeders had puppies that looked like they had greasy fur, especially on their face, above their eyes. I don't have great pictures to illustrate, but below are Pixie and Sabre at about the same age. |

And yes, his coat is still pretty black...and there's little chance it will change now, he just turned 9 years old yesterday. |

Oh that gives me hope Kyra will stay black. Happy Birthday Winston. |
Skunking? 1 Attachment(s) Since we all have soft/cottony yorkies in this thread, I thought I'd ask. Anyone else experiencing a grey line running down their yorkies back? Kaji has that for a while. I called him Pepe le pew for a bit since he's such a loving boy. :p the grey streak is now gone. His shoulders and mid back are dark again, and his little booty is starting to grey slightly. My mom jokes she's going to buy "Just for Pups" to help with Kaji's greying. ;) One recent pic of my giant ball of fluff. :) Attachment 382150 |
