advice for my new tiny baby!

Hi! I'm Chelsea, this is my first post. . In about 3 weeks my yorkie is coming home and im so happy. he is a very little boy, im not sure of his weight, but he looks about a pound at 10 wks, the breeder says he will be about 3 pounds. i didnt set out to get such a mini yorkie, but when i saw him i fell in love . so i have been reading up ALOT and know about possible health problems etc.
so i was wondering if there are any other owners of tiny babies out there who have some practical, everyday advice on problems/joys of owning such a small dog! also, if in the nyc area, i think he might need a playmate in awhile, message me. thanks, any help at all will be appriciated!

Congrat on you new pup! I'm excited you for! My advice to is do not rush to take your pup out. Make sure he has his last set of puppy vaccination before you introduce him to a unknown dog. Otherwise, have fun and enjoy playing with your new pup!

I have two small yorkies and my daughter has one. Yorkie Rose is an awesome resource I can tell you that!

I would make sure you get an "emergency hypoglycemia kit" from your breeder with written instructions just in case. The kit should contain a feeding syringe, pedialyte, dry baby oatmel, corn starch or Karo syrup and a jar of soft baby food. You also need Nutrical in case your puppy "crashes" because sometimes this will rejuvenate them enough to get them to the vet.

Make sure he is eating well and his stools are solid before you take him. Make your home as stressfree and calm as possible for the first couple of weeks. At that age and that size size he needs 24/7 care. He is like a newborn preemie. He is still developing. If your breeder is close by that's a good thing because usually they will help you with a sick puppy and some actually know more than the vets about these small breeds and will attempt life saving measures when a vet will all but let them die. My breeder saved my daughter's dogs life. Read up on vaccinations, common illnesses and health concerns so you are aware if you see any telltale symptoms.

Get some recommendations to vets who know about the special needs of small bredds and interview or tour the offices of several before you decide on one.

Have ample supplies and make sure your home is puppy proofed before you bring him home. You won't be able to leave him to run out and get things and. like Yorkie Rose said, he shouldn't be "out" until he is fully vaccinated.

I don't mean to scare you because you are going to love this little baby but it is a tremendous responsibility having a tiny yorkie and until they are 6 months old, they are otally dependent creatures. I am sure you wil be an awesome mommy becaus eyou are already doing your research and preparing yourself for this baby! Good for you! I wish everyone knew to do this. I was so naive when I got my first yorkie puppy!! I still don't know much but I'm learning. You will too!

Kim has given you wonderful advice. I always carry the nutrical in my purse when Tia is with me as well. She's not nearly as small as your puppy, but does tend to get stressed out in new situations.

I can't wait to see pictures of your new baby!

Be really careful with your new furbaby under foot. I was getting something out of the fridge and not being used to something following me everywhere he got his little foot partly stepped on with my toes and he yepped! I was guilt ridden for days worried if I broke his foot but it turns out he was just fine. He was only 10 weeks back then he's now 6mths and 4lbs 4oz.
