Braving Hurricane Sandy I left Maryland at 6 am, Saturday, and drove my mother and the four dogs down to the Florida Keys. Interstate 95 was a ghost town. That's because all the smart people listened to the tv and stayed home. ;) We made the trip in 20 hours. The pups were amazing. They did great. Even little Allie was a perfect angel. When my stubborn mom gets it in her head that she is going home, nothing will stop her. Even a hurricane won't change her mind. Here's the best part of all. My mother's name is Sandy. :) |
Living in Houston, I have been through "a few" hurricanes. They are not to be messed with. They definately mess with YOU. To everyone in the storm's way, BE CAREFUL, please. You will be in my prayers and thoughts. Louise |
Ha-ha! I'm glad you made it home safely. You may be wishing you'd stayed down there with her.:) |

Lucky you! They just closed the schools here for tomorrow! |
Im in delaware and they started evacutions for some parts. I don't have to evacute so far. I've already have a list of pet friendly hotels in case I do. None of the shelters allow pets....bummer. I have their stuff packed and ready to go incase we have to make a mad dash. I have a full tank of gas, some cash, emergency kit, blankets, and plenty of canned food and water all packed in my car. I have to admit I am little nervous about this storm mainly because i live alone. Most of my family is in Nashville Tennessee. |
Be safe this is a doozy of a storm. |
Glad you made it. Don't drive back anytime soon! |

Very good! GOOD FOR YOU!!! You have every reason to be Nervous...if they tell you to go, smart lady, you are ready and willing to go! So many people think they can ride it out, ..."been through dozens of 'em, house never blew over, I 'aint leavin', balh, blah, blah"....then in the middle of the storm, when the water is 15 feet deep AND RAPIDLY RISING, the house is coming apart at the seams, the furniture and treasures and Yorkies have all washed away, and there is nothing left between them and the dark swirling, water, they start yelling for help! And then get pitzed off when no help can get to them.....and then they wash away......that happened on Boliver many times during Ike....I am certain it happened many, MANY times during Katrina....when they tell you to EVACUATE, they do that as a last resort...do as your are told to do, AND SURVIVE!!! For all of you sitting there waiting for the storm to engulf you, just be ready and willing to load up and leave....STORM SURGE AND RISING FLOOD WATER IS NOT YOUR FRIEND!!! |
I am praying for all my friends.. Please PLEASE do what it takes to stay safe. Nothing is more important than you, your loved ones, and of course your pets!!!! |
For all please stay safe ! |

We in the north east are about to experience our first catastrophic storm. At least that is what the weather and news people keep saying. They say we could have power outages for weeks at a time due to the high winds and flooding. They say this particular storm pattern has never happened before. It has something to do with the way the jet stream is positioned as this huge storm hits land at or about NYC and NJ. The coast line will get the storm surge but they say the rain will be extreme and last for at least 2 days with 60 mile an hour winds. Everyone is hoping that this is just another weather over estimation but it looks like everything is happening just as they predicted. I'm not good at roughing it anymore. If the electric goes out I guess I can deal with it but it is going to be cold and most people do not have alternate heat sources. Being that I live in the woods I am hoping the trees all stay put. Say a prayer for PA and NY tonight. |
All of you stay safe and listen to what Yorkiemom1 said about leaving. I had been through many hurricanes, living in Mobile, but when Katrina came that was the first one where we had no electricity for two weeks and I had to stand in line for ice and food. Never want to do that again. |
Stay safe and be careful. Stay in touch if you can. |
Def do not come home now! |
We are not looking forward to this here at all...We had a catastrophic storm 6 years ago...much of the same elements are here today as the wind and rain are already here... Leaves on trees being the biggest problem...its not quite cold enough to snow but it could easily change because of the lakes and the canadian air...the weather folks just aren't sure what will happen yet, here anyway... Heres what happened 6 years ago: Buffalo, New York snow storm closes schools, leaves nearly 400,000 without power - Wikinews, the free news sourceAt that time I had my Mom and Dad and my ex, we were all at our tenants house because he was the only one who had electricity...my mom was literally the last one to get power in the area...it was crazy... I now live in a house that I have no idea how it will fare if the power goes out...I have sump pumps but no backup for power failure...that cost $600 and I had planned to have it installed when I saved for it....the former owner is a liar so I have no idea what will happen....so keep your fingers crossed that I'm not bailing water...thanks! |
Praying for everyone. Please be safe friends, if they say leave, leave. I have been in some hurricanes and they are serious weather. Don't wait until it is too late. If you leave and the storm misses your area, count it as a blessing. It is better to be inconvenienced, than to stay and be dead. |
Please stay safe all northeast coast Yorkie Talkers!. Although we only expect to receive the tail end of the storm, apparently winds here tonight are expected to be 70km gusting to 90km per hour. Plus rain, and maybe downed power lines. So this wkend we topped up the generators, recharged battery packs, and topped off water supply in house. I just need to dig out the portable air mattresses in case of power outage. That way we will only heat two small rooms if heat goes off. Unfortunately the car is in the garage getting services and such, I don'tknow when the car will be back home - but it is topped with gas:) |
Praying for everyone to make it through the hurricane safely |
Keeping you all in my prayers to ride this terrible storm out safely. |
Checking to be sure everyone still safe. Prayers are headed your way tonight so please stay at home and safe as possible through this long night. |
In central PA the wind gusts are picking up and the rain is steady. Power is flickering for a few seconds at a time - hoping that's all we get, and we don't lose power. News men say 1.5 million currently are without power in the various states. My dad and aunt in CT have lost power, but sister and nephew there still have power. Daughter in D.C. still has power, thank goodness. Trying to get through the evening at least with power. Staying put in the house, not going anywhere. |

Thank God you aren't in Maryland Kim. I was so worried because I didn't know if you had left for the Keys yet. To everyone else in Sandy's path please be careful and safe. |
Made it through the night. The winds were wild! Pups and I were huddled together on the bed:) About 30,000 folks without power in Toronto, but subway was running this am and most bus routes as well:thumbup: It is still raining but the winds have calmed down, and best of all I have my car back:thumbup: I understand NYC got hit hard.... Hope our YTer's there are okay... |
