Rawhide chews can kill your puppy or dog! Lots of new pups out there and new owners... so here it is again: RAWHIDE CHEWS CAN and DO KILL! All it takes is a little piece bitten off to go down the wrong 'pipe' or to get stuck in the throat, can be soft or hard, it doesn't matter. Not to mention big chunks that they may try to swallow in their excitement. Vets cannot 'fix' everything! Please don't let your puppy or dog become a statistic. It is not worth it to risk their lives for a few hours of enjoyment... |
I've always steered clear of rawhide, even with my big boy, because they are very hard to digest (sometimes they just don't digest at all). This is what I had always heard/read. I only give him pig ears and pig skin twists and such. So, this is what I do with Mandie, too. I never even thought about a piece getting stuck in the windpipe or lungs. Do you think this is a hazard with pig ears/skin treats, too?? |
Thanks for the reminder. |
I wrote to the SPCA because they take raw hide donations. So frusterated most shelters still give this to dogs they should know better. |

I don't know what to do because one of the first things our vet said was that she wanted Max to be on a rawhide or greenie diet, meaning she wants him to chew one of the two daily....but I've heard bad things about both :( what should I do? Go against the vet's suggestion? Or are there safer options? |
My vet,and his 5 vet children, do not like rawhide. They say the dog's saliva activates the rawhide making it a good medium for bacteria to grow there, and then the dog chews it an ingests it, |

I would not give your pup either. They can kill your dog. I am so surprised that a vet would recommend either. I would personally not trust that vet. And I would look for another vet. . . . .but that is just me |

I hope those that don't know about them read this thread & take it to heart for their baby's sake. Those things are just dangerous! Good for you for posting it! |
I saw those bully sticks at Costco today and I know my JoJo would choke on a piece of that stuff. No rawhide is safe for our precious dogs. Be very careful what you give them to chew on. |
Rawhide also swells and can cause a blockage. I give Callie bullysticks and just keep an eye on her when she has one. Pig ears have way to much fat and they kept having recalls on them. |
