Rawhide can be swallowed and sit undigested in the stomach. Many dog's have had to have surgery to remove rawhide. All rawhide is bad but the ones with ends on them to make them look like bones are the worst. Dogs easily chew the end off and get them stuck in the throat and die. |
My vet was the one to tell me NEVER to give my little guy rawhides, greenies or bully sticks. He gets deer antlers only and they are thrown away as soon as the get small. Every once in a while he gets the Paragon chews. |

I looked at antlers...they had some really small ones....I could just see trying to get that rigid thing out of my dogs throat! Someone told me their vet said antlers can chip teeth too.... I will stick with Bully Sticks...they dont break off in large pieces to swallow/strangle on, and I take them up when they get to a length that the dog can get the entire thing in its mouth. No one gets anything to chew on unless I am there with them, watching.... |
Scoobers got antlers once loved them! I've been scared to get them since, Elvis' teeth are so bad we only use soft chews, been trying to save them but most likely at his annual vet will decide to extract several. Maybe we'll do antlers after, they may save the extraction cost but wow could be painful for him. Anyone use antlers on a yorkie with the bad teeth? Elvis has 6 that we couldn't remove enough tartar to stop decay and two that needed to "reseat" after his girst scraping. |
Hmmm, I have to say that it does seem like the antlers could chip teeth. I think I'll just stick with carrot sticks for Mandie. She loves them anyway ;) |
I buy my little Gracie 12" regular sized bully sticks. When she gets the sick down to 3 or 4 inches I throw them away. They are good at cleaning the teeth since they can soften the stick enough to get their teeth into it but she can't actually bite a piece off of it. You do have to be careful where you buy them though. There are some discount companies that are selling very soft bully sticks and they can be a problem. I have had the best results from the sticks from Best Bully Sticks. They are hard enough that she can only soften the end and they are from grass fed beef that have no hormones, steroids or antibiotics injected. If a company cannot guarantee their beef that way then I'd stay away. They also are not fatty. Just protein. |
I was told to always watch him with the antler make sure he is not being too aggressive and if so remove it for the time being but antlers are composed of calcium, phosphorous and as much as 50 percent water. My two have never had rawhides and never will. Too dangerous! Thanks for the reminder :) |
Also, a number of rawhide products are made with formaldehyde. Especially if the rawhide was made outside the states. |
Max gets Bully Sticks and Himalayan chews. Now that he is 1 and doesn't need to be occupied 24/7, I only give them occasionally (once a week). What are the risks with those? |
