Thunder Hi. We are having violent thunder here in S Ca and my dog is going crazy. Tried.... Thunder Shirt, DAP calming spray, high volume music, putting in closet, but nothing stops him going crazy. Barking and running around like a mad demon. Poor dog is so stressed. They say consoling him does no good as it only reinforces behavior. Luckily this will pass in time. Also have same issue with fireworks. Anyone else have this and how do you deal with it??? I am running out of ideas. Thank you. |
Are you putting the thundershirt on before the thunder or after it starts? |
I have never tried those thunder shirts. Peanut is deathly scared of fireworks... I usually just put him in his kennel and throw a blanket over it, along with turning the fan on in the bedroom to kinda help mask the noise... It will usually help him. He loves his kennel- so I know he feels safe in there. Does your dog have a place where he feels safe? |
Thunder Thanks for your replies. I did not know the thunder was coming, it was fine one minute and then...bang. So I did not put the shirt on prior. Thunder is rare here. I tried all places that he is very comfortable in usually, I even took him into his Snoozer seat in the car, but no luck. He just wants to run out and get at the cause of his misery, and it is hard to even get hold of him. On firework nights when I know it is going to happen, I put him in the quietest bedroom and put the tv on LOUD. That seemed to work. But thunder is everywhere. Storm has abated now but he is still lying here grumbling away, and seems that he takes time to quieten down. Hope that is all for today. |
My Tink does that too. I took her out during the fireworks and held her head towards the sky so she could see them. Lol, boy, was that a mistake! She also barks at airplanes. It was too funny when the Blue Angels flew over... cause the noise is so far behind them... talk about confused, lol. She does get quite aggressive with that kind of noise. I think I'm going to hide in the closet myself the next time. I think I finally just went to bed... and somehow fell asleep! I will be trying a Thundershirt on her... next time. |
Rink Thank you for sharing your experience, I am not alone. It is so frustrating when nothing stops the frantic and noisy barking. How you managed to sleep I do not know. LOL! My boy also hates planes, fireworks, and as for the gardener's blowers?!!! He must have very sensitive hearing. Good luck with the Thunder shirt, I don't find it helps much but many do. |

Last year Pixie suddenly became terrified of thunder. Now she is scared of rain and planes going over. I found the combination of the thundershirt and drops my vet gave me called naturcalm. It can only be bought at the vets. It has worked great for her. |
Thunder Thanks Patti. I will try the Naturcalm and Thundershirt combo. It is so distressing to see our babies so scared of these noises, and we will try anything to help. |
I had no idea we were gonna have a thunder storm, it was awesome (only for me)! I put them in the bath tub loll. It keeps them from pacing around & being all nervous...it seemed to help a little, but they were panting like cwazzie. |
Mimi So you got a surprise too? Bath is a good idea, but my jumper would be out of there in a second! And probably break his legs!! He really goes crazy and is so mad he cannot catch the culprit. Thank goodness thunder is rare here. |
I have two dogs ... One is an extreme barker when it comes to thunderstorms ... fireworks or loud sirens of any kind I tried the thundershirt and now I have a barking dog with a shirt on It might work for other people but not for me My other dog? Not a peep What I do find does help is definitely keep him or her confined as much as possible Try to keep them occupied .... I find that playing with them or breaking out the treats...... not for the treat sake because that will reinforce the behavoir but trying a sit .... stand session will work |
Thunder Isn't it weird that 2 dogs could be so different? Perhaps you could ask the quiet one to tell the other it is OK. LOL. Might understand 'dog' better than human words. It is easier to prepare when you know it is going to happen, as with fireworks, but this time the thunder just came out of the blue. When he gets into the barky thing nothing stops it - treats or anything. The shirt is kinda cute though! |
I'm not saying this is the answer, but my best friend used to have a husky mix dog that was terrified of thunder. It stemmed from being really close to a lightning strike. After trying all sorts of things, what finally worked for the dog was...benadryl. Seriously, if she knew a storm was coming (which the do quite often here in Alabama), she would give him the right dosage of benadryl for his weight and it would keep him calm during the storm. |
