A hawk just slammed into my door I was just outside with my girls. Mylee was snooping around in the flowers and when I called her to let's go in she came flying across the yard (separation anxiety...she doesn't like to be left behind). We no more than came in through the door (I didn't close it) and heard the bang. When I turned around I seen it hopping off and couldn't believe what I saw. I went out and it flew up to the trees, sat there a moment then flew off. I really think Mylee got its attention when she came running across the yard. I'm sure she could look like a rabbit. Anyway it was a small hawk in terms if most around here but still. Our deck is covered so it had to fly under the pergola to hit my door. Hawks are nothing new to us, but I've never had one hit a door like that. It left feathers!!! Scary! |
Oh my goodness! How scary! It was probably chasing Mylee. Thank goodness it didn't get her... |
Oh!! Thank goodness your timing to go inside was just perfect! I'd be a nervous wreck too. Glad the pups are ok & you're with them outside. Kiss them both for us Shelly ;) |
Oh my goodness, how scary. I am glad everyone is ok. |
OMG these hawks are seriously dangerous! A hawk landed on our patio railing last week when I was giving the fur butts a bath. They were sitting by the patio door to get some sun. I was so shocked @ it's size, it was biggest hawk I ever saw! It's been hunting the pigeons around the complex here. Please be careful when you're outside w/the little ones, be on high alert @ all times! |
We had a small bird hit our glass door and it was hard and startled me I could not imagine a hawk I would have needed to change my pants. Glad yall where inside. |
You must be terrified. I'm so relieved that no one got hurt. Give your little ones some extra kisses from me. |
It was scary, and I think it's still out there. The most common hawks we have are the large redtailed hawks, but that's not what this was. It's shaped more like a falcon and much smaller than the redtailed hawks. I don't think it was big enough to carry off either one of my dogs, but not that it couldn't do damage with it's talons and beak if it attacked. Still very scary and a warning that I have to be extra vigilant when they're outside. |
That had to be scary... do you have any kind of shiny or reflective clothing for your pup? I also put reflective junk (old CDs are good, mirror type gazing balls) in the garden, it's supposed to scare off the birds. |
Whoa....that would scare me silly. Thank goodness you all had just gotten inside! My goodness. Bet you are still shaking. I believe I'd have to go sit in a wingback, have a cup of hot cocoa and wrap up in an afghan and just hug my Yorkie for an hour after that. Please be safe and keep a watch out! |
2 Attachment(s) Was it either of these? American Kestrel (falcon) or Sharp-shinned Hawk Glad you babies are okay, though!! |
Omg! Now that is scary! I know that made you sick! Thank goodness she was safe behind the door. I would be prepared in the future. ;) |

It looked more like a Peregrin Falcon if you want to look that up. More black/greyish. |
This is about the third incident recently, where I've herd a Hawk made a stupid move like that. A while back, one (quite young I think) Hawk tried to catch My Female Becca and that was a bad mistake, and both mine killed it. |

Here's the peregrine.. |
Scary!! we have them here in NJ too, I live in the suburbs, the bundacks for my family..LOL we have black bears, foxes and all the good stuff..NOT funny when they get too close for comfort... glad everyone is ok... hugs, |
I had called the bird sanctuary at the Houston Zoo after my first encounter with a hawk....I wanted to know if birds see color...that woman told me they DID see color...so I had brite orange vests made for all mine so they did not look like rabbits or rats. Then I went to ace Hardware store and bought these large plastic owls that are about 2 feet tall....I got about 8 of them and I hung them in trees all over my yard, sitting some on the fence, some around in flower beds, some under my patio, one out by the little pond, etc....that cut down on them for about 8 months...then I got laz moving them all around the yard, repositioning them so the hawks wouldnt catch on...and then they realized they were not rel and came back..... |
Golly, this must be a big year for hawks ! Aroung here we have mostly Cooper and Redtails, but there are many other kinds. All have talons and beaks, so are a potential problem. Please don't under estimate them. Even if they just pounce and can't carry, their talons and beaks can rip our babies to bits ! The Fish & Wildlife officer told me that sometimes they swoop and pounce in order to test the size and weight of the prey. |
Shelly I just saw this on your FB and OMG I would have fainted. I am so thankful that he didn't get his talons in either girl. |
Sounds to me like its time for the "crafty" folks on YT to get busy! I think a trip to JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby for some "blingy" material and some vest patterns are in my future! Maybe these pesky birds of prey would be turned off if our furbabys were parading around the yard looking like Liberace or Elton in spangly vests, lol. Definitely worth a try, anyway. |

So glad your babies are ok, it seems no place is truly safe. |
It seems like there are more and more predators starting to appear. I know they are protected but maybe it has caused an over population of them? I know we need them and all but it seems we are seeing way more of them. |
Everyone is so right you can't ever let your guard down. Here they still have plenty of prey in their natural habitat that attacks in the suburban areas are rare but I am sure they'd love an easy target if the opportunity presented itself. |
I asked in a thread about hawks (about 2 or 3 weeks ago) if putting clothes on my Mandie would deter a hawk. The answers I got were that it wasn't likely. Now, in this thread, I'm reading orange vests and reflective clothing might help. I think anything is better than nothing, so my new game plan (along with always being vigilant) is to always have some bright color clothing on Mandie when we go out. I will look into hanging old CDs, as mentioned above, too. Can't hurt..may help eh? :) |
OMG that is so scary. We have a Red Tailed Hawk that sits on the fence everyday watching the yard and house. I hear thumps all the time outside our house. Wonder if it is hitting the house. My little 3 pound Trinket is pee pad trained so don`t have her out to potty, but I do take her out for walks. This makes me want to just take her in her stroller with the top zipped. Red tails are all over the continent. Gosh watch out everyone. |
Now you guys have got me thinking more like Back Armor - too strong for talons and can't get a grip. Will have to give this more thought. Quote:

Wow that is soooo scary! I'm glad everyone is okay, but if there's anything good coming from this, I'd say its a real eye opener! |
How scary |

To the OP - I'm sorry that I forgot to address you in my original reply. I'm so glad you all got inside in just the nick of time. I bet that hawk is scared of your house now, though. lol |
