More than a little mad.......... My husband and I drive 800 RT to pickup our Priscilla, 2 weeks ago this Saturday. She was born on 7/5/12, which made her a tad over 10 weeks when we picked her up. She is a tiny gal (not why we chose her)...her brothers were quite a bit bigger than her. She is from a littler of 5. We met her Mom, she weighed in at 4.5 lbs - 5 lbs. Did not get to meet Dad, told he was 5 lbs. While I am fully aware that where we live, dogs must come with a health certificate..she did not. The breeder gave her a shot while we were there, and another worming. We spent 1 hr there speaking with the breeder and playing with the pup. I brought her to our Vet that week, dropped her off for her checkup etc. Imagine my suprise the Vet states she is 6 weeks old. Now I am not sure about this. Yes, she is small. But her teeth are all there, sharp as heck..no issues with eating Royal # 29 dry food. No excessive crying, whinning, looking at my large breed dog as "Momma" or anything like that. CRAP. I have CKC papers on her (which I could care less about)...that stated her DOB as well. Called the Breeder, who SWEARS her DOB is correct...went into the whole story on how pups were born day after her mother died etc etc. She did say she would take her back. Of course I said heck no. I have zero experience with Yorkie babies...large breeds (Boxer) yes. BUT I can tell you, if she is only 6 weeks, that would have made her 4 1/2 weeks when we picked her up and I SURE as heck would have known that, experience with Yorkies or not!!! I not sure my Vet is correct...I love her to death, but she can be a rushed ditzy gal sometimes! The only thing that I question to her age is her coat...It is very thick and short..almost like a baby Rottweiler. Sorry this is so long...just in a quandry here. |
I don't know if the vet is right or wrong; however, I hardly doubt this pup was 4+ weeks when you received her...New pups should be seen within a day or two of bringing home...anyway, what did the vet say about her health etc.? As far as her coat it sounds normal to me, their coat takes shape as they get older. Who was the breeder you got your pup from? |
I didn't get Joey till 12 weeks, but his coat was a couple of inches long, so if hers still looks like a Rottweiler, I'd be suspicious. By the way, unless you are talking about the reputable Canadian Kennel Club, the "other" CKC the Continental Kennel Club is what they call a paper registry. I think they chose those initials to mislead people. A breeder needs no proof of purebred lines, and you can even register mixes. Most pet owners don’t really care if the dog is registered, but it’s about supporting good breeders who are doing right by the breed. Did your vet tell you why he thought she was so young? Is he familiar with toy breeds? How small is she? You might want to do a bile acids test at 16 weeks just to be safe since all her littermates were much bigger. |
My Vet said she was healthy...however, did have tapeworms. She said she did not have all her baby teeth yet, that is why she said she was not her age. Like I said, I love the Vet, but do not agree. The Vet's specialty is English Bulldogs. I did not care about papers...CKC or otherwise. She is for pet only. I will have to figure out how to post a pic of Priscilla. The breeder was a "hobby" breeder...Betty Brown of Pensacola, FL |
Priscilla weighed 2 lbs at what should be 11 weeks. I have a copy of the Dad's blood lines though the AKC...Mom was CKC. But anyone can show you a paper and a dog... |
If she did not have all her baby teeth then your vet is probably more on then the breeder there are many bad breeders out there who lie because they just want the money. In the future please only get a pup that has stayed with mom until 12 weeks, mom is 5 pounds or over, and that they have done genetic testing on the parents. I would make sure you know as much as you can about hypoglycemia and be prepared for it as well as not leave the pup alone for more then an hour. Making sure she eats is extremely important and she needs to do it every couple of hours. It is also best until she has all her shots to keep her away from other dogs and places other dogs go. |

Congrats on your baby...her weight sounds right for a 11 to 12 week old and some are slower about getting their teeth than others LOL i had a litter a few years back and they all got their teeth pretty fast except one little boy that was around 10 wks before his first tooth appeared..I wouldn't worry to much about this she is healthy and eating good... |
She has ALWAYS eaten well..that has not been a problem for her! LOL. She eats Royal Canin # 29. I am well versed in low blood sugar and had preparations with me just in case. I work from my home, so she is not alone. She also has "Elvis" the other Yorkie friend. She plays hard, sleeps harder! Funny you should mention that Micah...I spoke with another Vet who said the same thing...they said sometimes teeth develop at different times just as in two children are never alike! The only dogs she has been around is Elvis and my 2 boxers. All of which are current and UTD on all shots, flea meds and HW. I wanted to get Priscilla started on flea treatment, but because of the Vets concern for her being younger than 8 weeks..we chose to hold off just in case. |

2 Attachment(s) Here is Priscilla at what I am told is 12 weeks. I had to trim her hair around her face/eyes as it was getting hard for her to see!Attachment 375279Attachment 375280 |
I think she is 12 weeks there hair doesnt get real long when they are young pups and it was about 12 weeks when my jewels needed a little trim |
i am no expert by any means but imo she looks like she could be 12 weeks... |
Interesting how Elvis is a week younger and look how advanced he is....There again...I know no two are alike :) |
3 Attachment(s) She could probably be 12 weeks .... all dogs are different and grow at different rates, and especially if she didn't come from the greatest breeder, she may not have the proper hair, etc. My Jackson did not come from the greatest breeeder and this is a photo of him at 9 weeks when I brought him home. |
