Help she won't eat! Josie has just been sleeping all afternoon. I've tried picking her up but she'll just fall back asleep in my arms. She has been drinking a bit but hasn't touched her food. I've tried putting some in her mouth but she claps down and won't open up. I tried giving her cheese, sprinkled a bit of parmesean on her food and still nothing. Should I try giving her Karo syrup? I'm so worried that she's going to get hypoglycemia. We don't have any emergency vets within 2 hours from here and her appointment isn't until 3:30 tomorrow. |
how old is the puppy? How much does she weigh? Does she seem lethargic or just sleepy? Is she active when awake? |
She's just over 8 weeks old and weighs 23 ounces. She seems lethargic to me. She hasn't wanted to play or do anything all afternoon. This morning she played twice and ate then but nothing since. |
8 weeks, 23 oz. Oh My. Did you not buy any Nutri Cal to have on hand with one this small?? You need to get something in her or else you will have a problem. I pray she will be OK. |
Thanks I looked for nutrical but couln't find it I'm hoping the vet can give me some tomorrow. I rubbed a bit of syrup on her gums so know I'm just waiting to see if she perks up. |
If she's still lethargic and that young, small, I would go ahead & take some sugar-water or honey or karo & start for the ER Vet, dispensing some more glucose from time to time. Keep her aroused and awake. Stimulate her, blow in her face, things like that. |

Normally I would say call your breeder but your breeder is the one who let this pup go at 8 weeks and so small...so based on what you have described I would head to the vet. These little ones can go down hill very quickly and you are too far away for help. Better safe than sorry hon, you need to get the pup checked out. It saddens me that you purchased this pup so early especially since you were on YT in advance of purchasing a pup and got so much good advice from so many. Last I knew you were going to see one of the 3 possiblities on Sunday. Good luck and please keep us posted... |
Good news she has perked up and is eating her food. I know that they are suppose to stay untill 12 weeks old but the breeder had already separated her from the mother. He would have sold her to someone else if I hadn't took her. I just could not leave her in that place. I knew better but I still couldn't stand the thought of her being there. It was horrible. I hate the thought that it is helping the breeder continue to do it but my heart is too soft not to help her. When I spoke to the breeder he seemed very kind and caring but he was just a puppymill. It broke my heart. I'm sorry I didn't listen to your advice better. But she's mine now and at least she'll have a good life. I'm off to the vet now. Thanks everyone. |
Keep us updated |
Well, that is the best news I've heard in a long time. I was worried silly about this baby sounding so sleepy and not eating and young and tiny! Oh, this is great, great news. But don't forget to keep checking on her very frequently during the night every 2-3 hours. I'd sure keep calling my vet & asking him what to do to get her through the night in case it's something besides hypoglycemia. With no local ER vet, surely he will help out. |

Good luck and keep us posted on this sweet little girl. |
At around 6:46pm she wrote that she had "rubbed a bit of syrup on her gums"....at 7:30pm, she wrote the baby was awake and eating....that was from the sugar bump she got at from the "bit of syrup" she rubbed on the pups gums....that will drop again probably around 10-12 midnite.....I am glad she has headed for the vet......that baby needs 1-2cc of syrup, every 4 hours, until she is eating enough to keep her blood sugar up enough to do her any good at all.....praying the baby is ok...... |
Wow I hope that little one is going to be ok. So tiny |
I'm so happy to hear she is ok. But keep an eye on her as she could go down hill very fast. I brought my new puppy home yesterday. She is also 8wks and weighs 520gms. She has been fine and was so hungry when we got her home after a 3 & a 1/2 hr drive. I fed her straight away and she ate as though their was no tomorrow. She has been drinking fine just keeping me up now at night. I've had her in bed with me as she cried so much. But was restless. Then got up and have been sitting with her since 03.30. I didn't want to disturb my hubby as he has been sick. I was also very weary about wee's and poo's in bed with me! What do all you other new mom's do for night time feeding and sleeping and potty time through the night?? In South Africa we always bring our puppies home at 8wks unless they are exceptionally small or if you want a show dog ..then the breeder keeps them longer. Mine has played and tried making friends with our dachie..was so cute. Good Luck with your new little one xxx |
