Milo won't take his pill's anymore I have the hardest time getting him to take his flea pill and heart worm pill. He use to take them really good but now he won't. I have to crush them up and put it into something for him. How do u get your yorkie to take his pills? |
I take some cheddar cheese, the extremely sharp and smelly kind, and wrap it in that and mold the cheese completely around the pill. Mine gulp cheese down so they don't even chew it:rolleyes: LOL Some have had good luck with those Pill Pockets made by Greenies, but I've never used them myself. Good luck! |
I would suggest that you crush them up and mix them in with some yummy wet dog food. He won't know that you put his pills in there, and he will get a delicious treat :) |
I will use Organic baby food, usually like sweet potato or carrots- he seems t o favor those, or I will use Peanut Butter. :D |
Well Callie takes her heart worm preventive fine and looks at me like ummm that was good more please. But other medicines I a use a pill shooter the hospital where Callie got her leg surgery done at gave me. It sounds bad but its not it doesn't shoot the pill it just drops it down there throat. Callie has an amazing ability to eat everything around the pill and then spit the pill out. Also when she had to take tramadol there is no tricking her into that medicine I had tried everything. The pill shooter doesn't hurt them unless you do it very wrong. If you get a pill shooter you need to make sure the end/tip is rubber though. |
they eat their heart worm pill like it's a treat! however, when they need antibiotics I take soft food, stick the pill in it and make a tiny meatball out of it...worked everytime! they thought they were getting a treat! |
Tibbe could spit out his tiny Interceptor pill sometimes but he gulps down his Heartguard in pieces until long gone. When he's balked at other pills, I just put some meat or liverwurst or even peanut butter around the pill or just put it down the back of his throat & hold his muzzle vertical until I see him swallow. Then he gets a praise and hugs, sometimes a treat. |
Heart worm preventive is easy for both of mine but other meds, I will use a small piece of cheese. Works pretty good. |

I remember when my cat was a kitten and we had to give her some medicine in pill form. Do you know it took two of us to get her to take a pill? It was so funny because two 100+ people could not hold her still long enough for her to get her to take a pill. Zoey weigh about 3bls then. Of course we didn't want to hurt her. We would try and disguise it in food, crushed it up, nothing work. She needed to take this pill once a day for like 7 days. It was a struggle the whole 7 days. :D |
Sasha has to take a potassium pill every day to prevent bladder stones. They changed the formula and he refuses to eat the new ones. Peanut butter worked for a while but then he started licking it off and spitting the pill out so for now I'm using cream cheese and so far so good. |
I think he can smell the tiniest bit of a pill. I have broke it into little pices and put it in peanut butter but he will lick around it and lick off cheese so now I will try meat. One day I tried for 30 min trying different thing to put it in. He did start out taking them like it was a treat. Lol. I guess he is smarter that I think. |

This is such a hassle, I stopped the Heartguard and am going to try the Trifexis. (ie: kill two birds with one pill...maybe) |
I use Low Fat Cream Cheese for mine, they never know pills are in there. |
I just poke the pill as far back into Toki's mouth as I can get it and gently hold her head upward until she swallows it. My boyfriend's family has a huge 85 pound lab that they would make mini peanut butter sandwiches for if she had several different pills to take (they just slather peanut butter on a slice of bread, drop the pills in it and fold it in half lol)...not really an option for little doggies though :) And my parents' beagle is amazing at somehow managing to remove tiny pills from mushy gobs of cheese and peanut butter so I just opt for the shove it (gently!) down the throat method |
I've tried the put pill down throat, hold mouth closed, and rub throat trick but I SWEAR Sasha is a master at just waiting until I let go and then he spits it out. So cream cheese it it for me, lol. |
Cream cheese, sharp cheddar, or peanut butter. I've used the pill pockets with other dogs. |
Yuri LOVES his heart worm pill. It's the only thing he'll roll over for. If I have to give him something else I wrap it in a little lunch meat, or part of a slice of cheese. The singles work best for us because they kind of smush together around it. If I use lunch meat I may end up wrapping it 3 or 4 times because he eats the meat and spits out the pill. Yumi is on advantage multi, and hasn't had to take any pills so far. |
Pills Pills pockets are usually great. Also soft american cheese slices. (I only use a very small amount, enough to just enclose the pill.) I wait until my dog is hungry and give him a small amount of the cheese alone, which he loves and gulps down, then the pill loaded cheese, then QUICKLY another bit of plain cheese. Before he knows it the pill has gone and he got 2 extra treats. LOL! He has never spit out the pill as he is too ready to get the last bit of cheese. Best of Luck! |

Just an update on this... I changed over to Trifexis for my two Adult Dogs, and they don't like it any more than they did the Heartgard, but... Trifexis doesn't make a pill for Dogs 0-5 Lbs, and I had to start my Pup Ichabod on Frontline/Heartgard. (He's half way there already ;) ) |

The heartguard pill is broken into little bites and Amy thinks it is a treat. The flea stuff we get from the vet is what you just rub into there back behind her neck. When we had Shelties any pills were put on a 1/4 piece of a bread and then a little smooth creamy peanut butter and they thought they were treats. Don't want to start that with Amy with any pills she might have to take but if I have to I will but will cut the size of the bread down a lot. |
