I just poke the pill as far back into Toki's mouth as I can get it and gently hold her head upward until she swallows it. My boyfriend's family has a huge 85 pound lab that they would make mini peanut butter sandwiches for if she had several different pills to take (they just slather peanut butter on a slice of bread, drop the pills in it and fold it in half lol)...not really an option for little doggies though :) And my parents' beagle is amazing at somehow managing to remove tiny pills from mushy gobs of cheese and peanut butter so I just opt for the shove it (gently!) down the throat method |
I've tried the put pill down throat, hold mouth closed, and rub throat trick but I SWEAR Sasha is a master at just waiting until I let go and then he spits it out. So cream cheese it it for me, lol. |
Cream cheese, sharp cheddar, or peanut butter. I've used the pill pockets with other dogs. |
Yuri LOVES his heart worm pill. It's the only thing he'll roll over for. If I have to give him something else I wrap it in a little lunch meat, or part of a slice of cheese. The singles work best for us because they kind of smush together around it. If I use lunch meat I may end up wrapping it 3 or 4 times because he eats the meat and spits out the pill. Yumi is on advantage multi, and hasn't had to take any pills so far. |
Pills Pills pockets are usually great. Also soft american cheese slices. (I only use a very small amount, enough to just enclose the pill.) I wait until my dog is hungry and give him a small amount of the cheese alone, which he loves and gulps down, then the pill loaded cheese, then QUICKLY another bit of plain cheese. Before he knows it the pill has gone and he got 2 extra treats. LOL! He has never spit out the pill as he is too ready to get the last bit of cheese. Best of Luck! |

Just an update on this... I changed over to Trifexis for my two Adult Dogs, and they don't like it any more than they did the Heartgard, but... Trifexis doesn't make a pill for Dogs 0-5 Lbs, and I had to start my Pup Ichabod on Frontline/Heartgard. (He's half way there already ;) ) |

The heartguard pill is broken into little bites and Amy thinks it is a treat. The flea stuff we get from the vet is what you just rub into there back behind her neck. When we had Shelties any pills were put on a 1/4 piece of a bread and then a little smooth creamy peanut butter and they thought they were treats. Don't want to start that with Amy with any pills she might have to take but if I have to I will but will cut the size of the bread down a lot. |
