*****Tibbe Almost Attacked But Umbrella Saved The Day!!!***** Took Tibbe out for a walk today even though it was lightly raining. Halfway through our walk, 2 Spitz-type dogs tore off their porch growling, showing teeth where they were sitting unleashed with 2 women and made straight for Tibbe, who saw them and was instantly at the end of the leash, displaying his fine set of teeth as well. It took the dogs about 3 - 4 seconds to get to us and I just had time to take my big black umbrella from over our heads to in front of us, laying the bottom edge on the sidewalk. These 2 dogs actually came closer than any dogs ever have before and though the umbrella is so big I couldn't see them past it, I could hear their low growls and sense, especially from Tibbe's reaction, that they were very near us on the other side of the umbrella and trying to get around it. I had to roll it sideways back and forth to keep them from trying to come around the edge as their owners were hot on their heels but it took them sometime to catch the dogs as they were running from them and circling back to us! Tibbe was no help at all as he was trying to get around it to them as well and he was mad! I caught sight of his little white teeth, snarled muzzle and heard his tiny growls as he kept pulling and trying to get around the umbrella! It was so scary as those 2 dogs could have really hurt him if they had somehow gotten to him and I couldn't get him to pick him up as I was using one hand to hold his leash and trying to reel him in and the other to try to keep that huge umbrella twirling on the sidewalk!!! If I had let go of the umbrella to get Tibbe, I think the dogs might just have managed to get around it, though I'm just not sure how close they really were. The umbrella is very wide and I couldn't see them as I was crouched behind it trying to control and twirl it while trying to reel angry Tibbe in with only 1 hand but these 2 dogs really got close! Too close! Pitbulls, GSD's, Rottie's and so forth just won't come that close to my just-unfurled umbrella but these little Spitz kind of dogs just came for us and got very close. Growling, snarling. I think one reason they were braver is they didn't get to see the big umbrella unfurl and hear that snap/whoosh sound it makes as it spreads out when I press the button. It was already open due to the rain and they'd seen it up over our heads so I don't guess they weren't as intimidated as when dogs stand there and see and hear it deploy suddenly, big and black. Anyway, I was very grateful when the women finally got the dogs and took them off but still more grateful I had that umbrella. Ever since little Jilly was so viciously injured in a sudden Dalmatian attack and had to have surgery, be hospitalized & have rehab due to her injuries, I have never failed to carry a big push-button umbrella with me on walks, whether or not a dog is with me! It has diffused many a situation over the years but maybe never in as close a call as today. Boy, that big, black umbrella is my hero tonight! That big piece of fabric and wires could just be the reason Tibbe is here beside me tonight and not in the Emergency E.R.! |
Glad you and Tibbe are ok. :) |
Glad you and Tibbe are ok! I wish people who had vicious dogs would keep them contained. |
Wow, how scary! I'm so glad you had your umbrella with you... It could have ended horribly! I wonder why those women didn't have their dogs contained? Before we fenced our front yard, we put an exercise pen on our porch to keep our two contained. I don't understand why people think it's okay to let their dogs run loose... |
Phew! Glad your little guy is okay! :) |
so glad you and tibbe are okay |
Two 30 - 35 lb. dogs could have even killed Tibbe if I'd fallen or something tying to stop a dogfight. Tibbe wanted a fight, too! It was so scary. I'm so glad my little baby is curled up right here with his mommie tonight, safe and sound. He's such a sweet little boy. I couldn't stand to see him hurt. There is a leash law where I live - why those 2 weren't leashed I don't know! |
OMGosh! So glad this turned out well and no one or pup was hurt! I was on the edge of my seat reading your story... my heart in my throat! |
Glad your okay. But I hate ppl who let there dogs loose. I usually pepper spray them . And wait for the owner to say something. Usually they just say he doesn't bite. I tell them next time I'm calling animal control because theres leash laws. Now I'm the jerk to the neighbors...all the while my dog is on a leash.??? i don't care |

I wish I knew how to get ya'll's replies in one box so I could thank you each for your sweet thoughts! I tried doing the "multi quote" but only one showed up! But thank you each for caring. I've been a member here 1 1/2 years and still feeling my way around trying to post things! But I thank each of you! It helps to have others understand how frightening even smaller size dogs can be when they come after your baby! |
i am so glad you are both ok |
OMG Jeanie!!! I would have probably panicked. I am glad you had your wits about you and averted what could have been a tragic situation. Did the women apologize to you? They should have:( I am so glad Tibbe is okay. |
Im glad you were able to keep Tibbs from getting attacked |
So glad you both are ok. What a frighting experience ! |
Goodness me Jeanie - how frightening  Thank goodness you had your trusty umbrella....I can just picture you crouched down behind it, twirling it round on the ground, and trying to haul Tibbe in, too  What a nightmare. Glad you're both ok, and hope you're not too shaken up :) Sally + Harry x |
You are so quick thinking. I'd have panicked. Tibbe owes you his life. The funny thing is, he probably thinks HE is the one that scared off the big dogs and protected Mommy by being so brave and mighty. He's saying, "You big dogs are lucky that black thing was in my way or I'd have torn you limb from limb." What a brave boy! So glad you are both alright. |
I am so glad that Tibbe is Ok. What a scare. I would have been yelling at those ladies and their dog's. |
I'm so glad that you and precious Tibbe are okay:eek:! I also hope that those ladies apologized and swore to never have their dogs off leash again! |
Goodness what a scare. I'm so glad everything turned out ok. |

I know what you mean - Jackson doesn't help either. We had a Lab charge us in my dads neighborhood and he wants to fight back and won't give up! So then I end up controlling him AND the dog I'm trying to fight off... |
so glad you are ok... wow how totally scary that was for you!!!! |
I am so glad to hear that your umbrella helped protect you and Tibbe. I have thought of carrying one since you first mentioned how useful it was to scare off menacing dogs. So happy you and Tibbe are safe. |
Glad you are both okay. This is what scares me about taking Jack and Josie on walks. I'd been a nervous wreck afterwards. |
How scary! I am glad you and Tibbe are ok. |

Oh my, I would have been scared to death. I'm so glad you both are home, safe and sound. You really handled that situation exactly right and was able to protect you baby, great job. I don't even want to consider how it could have not turned out with the happy ending. Give kisses & hugs to Tibbe from me & Zhoie! |
