Sad Yorkies and cats....Help please...

Hello..my little girl Milly is nearly 6 months now and I got her when she was 12 weeks. I also have a 3 year old persian cat (Nemo) who I have had since he was a kitten. I read so much about introducing a puppy to a cat family etc...was very careful how I introduced them however as soon as she saw Nemo run she started to chase him. if she manages to get Nemo then she will climb on top of Nemo, lick his face like crazy etc and Nemo doesn't like this! Since we got Milly Nemo mostly stays on his cat tree or on a higher surface or we have to keep Milly in the living room gated while Nemo gets some time to roam around. If Milly sees Nemo she will bark like crazy. So far Nemo has been very good with her has never tried to attack her viciously, he will sometimes give her a swipe and I make sure his nails are trimmed.

Before I got Milly I had all these lovely thoughts of them getting along and napping together etc but seeing how things have turned out I feel really sad. Nemo doesn't seem distressed by Milly and his behaviours haven't really changed apart from the fact he is weary of walking around whenever she is running free...Please help us has anyone experienced this before? Will the situation get better once Milly is spayed? She is getting spayed on the 26th of this month. Will it get better with time (although it has been 3 months since we got Milly).
Heeeeeeeeeelppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp:confused :

Well Milly is still a puppy, so she is going to be more playful than Nemo. Cats are way different than dogs. My Peanut loves cats, however cats for the most part do not like him. My Mom has 2 Bella and Trixie. Siamese and a Black and white. Bella hates him with a passion, she even clawed his eye when he was looking under the door for her, Trixie will tolerate him, IF he is calm. Now when I go see my Mom we will put the baby gate up so nobody gets hurt… (Peanut)

I would honestly just let Nemo do what he wants to do, let Nemo go to Milly. I would try to stop Milly from chasing him too. For the most part with a cat you kinda have to let them do what they are going to do- you can’t force anything on them. Maybe once Millie is spayed she will mellow out a little- I don’t know I never had a female.

I do see a lot of YTer’s have cats and yorkies so I know it can be done. So far it is a good sign Nemo didn’t attack Milly so I think in the end they will be best buds!

My Yorkies grew up with my cats but will chase them often. The Yorkies do know when to leave the cats alone. Mika (14) rules with an iron paw while Tallulah (12) will just sit there and take it. Tallulah actually loves the dogs and will cuddle up to them and rub on them which usually ends with a yorkie chasing her. Buddy (90 pound golden) is terrified of Mika and tortured my Tallulah who baths him daily and loves to rub on him and he never does anything. He will put himself between the Yorkies and the cats to protect them. The Yorkies have never hurt the cats. The cats do have dog free safe areas.

It will take time but they will work it out

I've never had yorkies with cats, but I did have a cat growing up and my sister had samoyeds. Smokey the cat was top dog at our house, and liked to play with the samoyeds, or cuddle on occasion if it was chilly. He even checked on her puppies if they cried.

I think how things work out will depend a lot on the personality of both pets, and until she's grown its hard to say what will happen. I do think at least one of them being young will make it easier. Just keep them from hurting each other, and try to keep them from being jealous and hope they can work things out. I'm not sure there is much else you can do...

I have two Yorkies and four cats. When I got Brody, no problem with him and the cats...but he wasn't raised with cats. He just pretty much ignored them, and they were cautious of him due to a Chi who became possessive of me and began to 'disallow' the cats from sharing my lap with her. Brody didn't care who was on or near the lap, or where anyone was.

Several months later, we had rolled up an area rug to take out on the deck and pressure wash and a cat jumped on the backing of the roll and began to 'sharpen' his claws and I yelled at him to quit. Brody became "King of the Cats" in that instant, and now feels he can "correct" their behavior, and "explain" the rules the "Brody Way" at times, but mostly, we have peace at home. I watch his body language any time there is a cat around and intervene before anything starts...most of the time successfully, but he will, at times chase them...he doesn't do anything when (if) he catches up to them and neither has been hurt at all. The cats are at least as big as he and Mia are, most are larger than him and Mia.

Mia, on the other hand, L.O.V.E.S cats, specifically "HER" kitty...but she tries soooo hard to befriend all the cats. She and "HER" kitty love on, and kiss, and preen each other, snuggle up together, etc., but...sometimes Mia is too forceful in her kissie-face-ing and "HER" kitty has not only protested but has 'thunked' her chin to the floor with his paw holding her head on the floor afterward...to keep from drowning in puppy kisses, I think.

The Shih Tzu I puppy sit for also chases "her" kitty, and they have worked out the "order" of things. In fact, the kitty accidentally got locked out of the house and in the screen room one day because he's gotten 'bolder' now hat he's got a new friend and decided to accompany his Shih friend through the door for her morning walk. Poor kitty was a mess by the time Mommy came home from work because there was a huge thunderstorm and pelting rain that day.

I don't know what to advise you to do...they will likely work it out as others have said. Good Luck!

That is funny because that is what my Jewels does we call her the cat enforcer. Every now and then one cat will get snotty with another cat and growl and hiss and swat and jewels will go after them. Also we used to not let them go outside and Jewels knew it and one would be by the door wanting out and Jewels would jump on their back like she was letting them know she wasnt letting them out. One time one of them swatted at chachi and she let them have it. Other than those type of incidents they cohabitate fine. If a cat needs let in the house the yorkies will bark so we will go to the door and let them in.

LOL, too funny...but, yeah...all my dogs have policed the cats and vice versa, but my 120+ lb Shep/Lab I lost in 2011 saved a little kitten from drowning in 2004 when the kitten fell in the, we thought...completely blocked off 'garden' (i.e., deep) bathtub filled with water for the 4-hurricanes-in-FL year, too...just kept barking and leading me through the house until I found the kitten.

They're great...entertainment at least......but I wouldn't trade them for the world and the nearest planets on either side!

Thank you all for your replies, I feel reassured knowing she is still a puppy and hopefully like you all said with time they will learn to live together...Milly sleeps with us and yesterday she did her 'crazy bark' in the middle of the night everytime Nemo came into the bedroom! Ahhhhhh...patience....

I have three cats, three yorkies...yes I have gone mad! lol! Chauncey the Ragdoll..keeps to himself, wants nothing to do with the dogs OR the other two cats. Skye is a little B with an itch...she will swipe at dogs, humans she could care less...you are in her personal space you WILL get swiped! For this reason I keep all other animals away from her...she has gotten into some nasty fights with the other cats. Darth Vader loves everyone human, or animal, he will sit and let Jersey bite on his ears, or Orion loving on him, or Raelle just chillin...he has come between the pup and miss 'b' when she decides to get nasty, being the larges of all animals he is none the worst for wear..he takes no crap from her!
In time they will work out their own arrangements, and will cohabitate peacefully....
