Microchipping Without Anesthesia I have a question....has anyone here had their furbabby microchipped without being under anesthesia? Macy has never been microchipped and I want to change that. She has been fixed and does not need a dental so she won't be having any surgery where microchipping would be easy to do. The vet said they microchip all the time without anesthesia, they just use a little bigger needle and it's over in a matter of seconds. This is the same dog that a few days ago screamed like she was dying when he put the stethescope to her chest to listen to her heart. |
No, Morgan was microchipped when he was neutered |
I havent had it done that way but its done that way all the time. I wouldnt hesitate getting it done that way though I just had mine done at the neuter/spay |
'Over here' it's never done under anesthetic - unless the Littlie is 'under' for another reason....:) It's a slightly larger needle than the normal shot one - but once it's done, it's done. There are no after-effects, as it's a quick 'in and out' procedure :) I truly hope your little girl is ok this time! Sally + Harry x |
In uk its never done under anesthetic its a quick in and out with a needle slighty bigger than the normal one, i have not had sam done yot as his first jab made him cry so much i didnt have the heart to make him have his chip as well, he goes back to vets next week for his last jab so am going to have a word with the vet to see if i can have him chipped when he has his hernia op :) |
Jaeger got a bit cranky when he had his (but it was like his 3rd procedure that day) but he didnt cry or anything. My Moms grown dog didnt bat an eye when they did hers. |
OK, sounds like Macy is getting microchipped. Hope she is a big girl and doesn't scream too much. |
Tibbe's chip implanted while he was getting a dental or neutering, can't recall which. |
I would def get her micro chipped ASAP. It is done without Anesthesia all the time. When I was a vet tech we would do the micro chipping, it is a very fast procedure. I have had a couple dogs really not "want" to put with with it, but it is over before they can cause a big stink... :D |

My son said that is just like when they get their vaccines, most of the time is done without anesthetic, here when we do the puppies we use a topical anesthetic, my son say is for MY peace of mind, LOL, please get your pup microchiped is a must do for all dog owners.. hugs, |

The only reason they do it "under anesthesia" is because the dog is having a procedure done and needs to be microchipped that visit, so they do everything together...the pups are NOT put under anesthesia in order to do the microchipping! I do my own microchipping and believe me, it hurts me alot more than it hurts the puppy! I HATE NEEDLES, but the babies seldom even yelp when they are chipped. The needles on the injector is soo sharp, and it just glides right in with NO or VERY LITTLE stress to the dog! |
It is not worth the risk of anesthesia nor the expense. Maggie was chipped while she was under for her spay, but it is normal procedure to chip without anesthesia. I would prefer the dog has few seconds, or less of pain (and I'm sure it's only like a hard pinch) than have side effects of being put under. I'm afraid to have her dental due to the anesthesia, but I understand it is required. She was 2 in April, so hopefully doesn't need one yet! |
I guess I'm lucky, my guys don't even blink when getting an injection, their Chips included. I'd resist ANY anesthesia unless absolutely necessary. |
I wasn't talking general anesthesia. Just thinking the vet would at least deaden the area with local anesthesia before zapping the older dogs. I think if I had something that size put under my skin I'm gonna INSIST on a local! That's gotta be an ouchy for an older dog who has a goodly nerve supply in the area of the neck, between the shoulders. If done as infant pup, doubt they can sense much pain from it, though this area would tend to have a greater supply of nerves, etc., than a leg or tail. Tibbe didn't get chipped till he was over 9 mos. old but he was under a general for his dental or neuter, thankfully. |

All shelter dogs are microchopped here...if getting altered they may be under for it otherwise its a poke and done. The humane society offers the service as a fund raising service no dogs or cats are under. I've seen it done many times only twice I can think of did a dog yelp...one of them was mine. To be fair he was yelping as soon as he saw yhe gun like needle coming |

Neither of mine were under anesthesia when they had their microchips implanted. They didn't really seem to notice it was being done. |
Both of my cats were microchipped without anesthesia, but Couv and Khloe were under for their spay/neuter when they were chipped. It is done all the time without anesthesia... I wouldn't worry about it too much, it's a quick poke and it's done. |
Ok, all the replies make me feel better. I just thought the microchip would hurt more. It's off to the vet she goes to get her microchip put in. Thanks to everyone that responded. |
BTW: When doing something like that (which may cause them a "little" pain), I let the Tech or Vet take them into another room, away from me. I'm NOT skittish about such things, I just don't want my guys to associate pain to/with me in ANY way. Reunions are FANTASTIC ! |
KS had hers done when she had her spay, but if the vet gives the ok, I would feel comfortable going forward. Hope all goes well! :) |
Injecting Lidocaine to "deaden" the area, STINGS!!!! Do you remember having a PPD (TB ) test, where they slowly thread that tiny little needle JUST under the skin, then inject the solution right under the skin, making a little bleb? THAT hurts more than injecting the micro-chip! |
When I had Soph done 6 years ago it was without any kind of anesthetic or anything. She didn't even flinch. She actually fussed and showed more reaction to the vaccination she got and it was a much smaller needle. |
This thread is helpful. I need to have Copper done also. Good information. |
Just had Lexie's done the other day without anesthesia. She didn't even flinch! Go for it! |
They do have topical products that numb the skin but once the needle is in they would still feel it to some extent. Lidocaine can sting when being injected so it would kind of defeat the purpose. If you have a good vet they should be able to do it very quickly. Some dogs (and people) tense up before and injection and so it is more painful than it should be. Just try to get her as relaxed as possible before they do it. |
