Please, everyone look out for hawks! This evening Cali killed a hawk that attacked her. She is 3 lbs 14 oz and the hawk was much bigger than she was, but she was faster. I don't think she has ever hurt anything I her life, but the hawk took her by surprise and she whirled around, grabbed it by the neck and shook it harder than I had any idea she could. Guess she broke it's neck -- no blood. She had a small scratch on her back so I called the vet who insisted that she get a antibiotic shot because the vet said hawks claws and beaks are "dirty". Cali is fine - a little typed up, but no real problems. She keeps wanting to go to the spot of the incident. Can't believe my gentle, sweet little girl could do that. So, please be very careful. We live in a suburban area, not even the country  |
:number1riCali, girl, you are my hero! Thank God you are okay!!!! I'm blown away by what you did! Bravo!!!! Wow! :happybounWahooooooooooo:cheer:ooooooooo:woof:oooo oooooooooo! Let's hear it for Cali!!:clapsmile |
Well, I had no idea she could do that  |
Oh my gosh! We have them here all the time. I hate them! And it's against the stupid law to kill them. :thumbdown. Cali, you go girl! I'm so glad she wasn't hurt badly. You must have been scared to death! |
She was so hyped up she was just shaking and growling and all I could do was hold her and shake and cry! I could not get her to leave the hawk body, just just sat there watching it, so I finally got her in the house. that is when I found the small scratch. I was freaked:eek: |
I would have freaked too! I would have cried my eyes out from relief that she was ok. I bet she will be hyped up all night! The poor baby had a near death experience! Give her extra hugs tonight mom! |
OMGosh ! So very glad Cali is safe and that you didn't croak from shock ! |
OMG  How scary!! I am so glad that Cali is safe. I am sure you both had hearts that were racing 100 miles an hour. |
Jay, so glad that Cali is ok, we have hawks around here all the time that we have to watch both of them close . I am surpised she had it in her to but that just shows that size does not matter. way to go Cali:D |
OMG!!! I always warn people to look out for hawks as well as other preditor birds....Calli was VERY lucky, especially being that small......usually, the hawk dives down and hits them in the back, breaking their back, then there is no struggle as they pick them up and fly off....perhaps it was a young hawk, still honing its hunting skills...please be very careful...the next time, it may be Big Momma that attacks.....I have had hawks and owls dive at mine, I too, live in a neighborhood....I am never more than 5-10 feet away from them, but actually, that is too far.....they can be taken in one fell swoop, and you are just absolutely transfixed in terror, stunned amazement!!! |
:eek:OMG that is unbelievable, we were on our lake with a lot of neighbors and talking about this type of thing just a few hours ago. My husband keeps spotting a hawk, or he now thinks it my be a young eagle, he said it stands over 3' tall, and we live in metro Detroit not even in the woods. I can not believe your dog was able to kill it. What happened to the hawk's body did it just die in your back yard. Callie is one cool dog in my book:thumbup: |
So glad that Cali is OK. Where is live I always watch for hawks. I never let my GiGi outside without me, and usually Buster, our other dog is with us. You always have to keep an eye on the sky. |

So thankful Cali is ok! What a brave girl she was! My son in law has warned me about the hawks where they live. Praying you both have a restful night! {{{{HUGS}}}} |
I\'m so glad she is o.k. My husband thinks I\'m paranoid because the girls are bigger and he doesn\'t think a hawk would try to grab either of them. Well, I have seen them sitting on the wire above our fence and in the tree at the side of the yard watching my girls...maybe they couldn\'t take off with one of them but they could do some damage trying! Please be careful no matter what size your dogs are. |
