Oh my! How frightening! I'm so glad she is ok. We have a lot if hawks near our house. I will be extra careful now. |
I am so glad Calli is ok!! What a brave brave little girl!!! I also do not live in the country... but, I had a hawk swoop down on us a few months ago. I was terrified, and it only swooped down and then right back up so I cannot imagine the terror you had to feel watching the hawk with your baby!! I am so glad she reacted as she did, and I am so happy for you that it turned out so well!! I also now hate hawks, and I am literally on pins and needles when I take mine outside. After the hawk incident we had, I cannot let mine run around in the back yard. They only go out on leash right beside me. I also do agree with the previous posters that hawks can and will carry off animals up to 8 pounds. After I told my vet what happened, he told me to be extremely careful bc a hawk could easily carry off my dogs. I haven't taken it lightly, and I literally keep my eyes peeled for any the entire time we are out. |
Wow, so glad Cali is okay. I was so afraid that she was hurt much worse than what you said. We have hawks and an eagles next in my neighorhood. We also have many, many HUGE turkey buzzards. Way to go Cali!!! |
Yay for Cali way to go girl :) |
It is not surprising that a hawk was wandering.... there are so many of them this year...... Cali is one lucky lil Yorkie! I am glad that she was quick enough to avoid the initial "strike" that usually paralyzes the victim of a hawk attack. Give her kisses from our trio & a hug from me! .... Keep a close watch, we don't want any more close calls!!!!! |
I am so glad that Cali is okay. How scary |
Cali is doing pretty well. Still has some anxiety about going out in the yard. Pays attention for every sound.Won't chase her ball or swim, just walks around, but stays by the back door. Doesnt chase the squirrels but did bark at one. Saw another hawk sitting up on the electrical wires just looking around yesterday. I hate it that her yard can't be played in and enjoyed anymore - doesn't seem fair. If I win the lottery I'll put up one of those huge cabanas over the yard :D |

Is it possible to 'cap' a section for her to play in with critter wire overhead or something? I hope not, but I think it may be a while before she is comfortable again...it would take me..maybe forever...to get over that. :p |

Wow Cali, you are amazing!:bravo: |
This might sound like a silly question, but I've really been thinking about this and wanted some opinions. We have a hawk (or 2) and a couple of owls at night. I was wondering...since these raptor birds go after small prey animals, what if I put some sort of clothing on Mandie when she is outside? Do you think a predator bird might see a yorkie in clothing and think, "Hey, that's not an animal. It has clothes on" and then leave her alone? And about the covering over the yard idea above...I've been trying to figure out an affordable way to do something like that too. Ugh... |

As far as the covering the yard idea, I am going to ask my dad if he can come up with anything. If he does, I will be glad to share. |

Yorkiemom1 informed us in another thread that the hawks see our yorkies as bunnies. |
Thanks for the fast response. It was just a thought. I suppose I'll be looking into getting a roofed dog kennel for outside. She just loves to play out there too much not to let her. I love all nature and I know the birds serve a valuable purpose, but...stupid birds :( |
