I have used the expression furbaby before cause I do tend to treat her like a baby at times but I struggle with the phrase "skin child". Wish I could find a sweeter name for my own children.

For what it's worth though, I definitely don't think calling your pet a dog is insulting! These days, I'd rather be called a dog than a human! LOL... Being a dog is an awesome thing =0)

But I don't like the term 'owner' for us. It just sounds so... I dunno. Enslaving or something. I am more like a parent than an "owner".

I call mine "the reapers of my kids inheritance " lol. Seriously though normally in real life we do call them the furkids.

I refer to mine as "my babies". It's not like I would have them confused with human kids, not at my age. I have a granddaughter that is 17, so if I say my babies, people know I am talking about my dogs. :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork

Well, not I never actually call her my furbaby or furchild. I just call her my baby!;)

In real life, I refer to Kaji as my baby or just munchkin. On Facebook, he's "the furry one." On YT, I think I've referred to him as fur any. I'm not sure anymore.

I don't mind the term "owner" as it seems so PETA-ish and PC-ish to use another term. (Not that PETA is all bad - has done some very good things but they are extreme in some of their thinking when they think no one should be able to keep pets). After all, our dogs are specifically selected and bought by us with our hard-earned money, loved, kept, cared for and secured by us, considered our property by the law, not free to leave at all ever (and if they leave it is a catastrophe) - plus dogs are totally and willingly subject to our bidding. But as they are not human beings, not our equals and don't even want to be, what is wrong with owning one? We didn't buy and don't own them to enslave them or force them to work unpaid for us. They were bought for companionship, acceptance, love and connection - something to share our lives with in a loving, give-and-take relationship. Dogs just want to be dogs - loved, kept and cared for by their owners and in return, love us unwaveringly for choosing and caring for them. I'm sure if asked and they could respond, they wouldn't object to being owned by their people and I'm also pretty sure they would agree with us that our having bought them is the the only instance where money can buy love. I don't see the term owner as a pejorative one personally. I'm so proud to be Tibbe's owner. And in that same spirit, I tell one and all I am proud to be owned by Tibbe and I think Tibbe is proud to be owned by me. :)

Well I actually do use the term furbaby. LOL As in "aww...your furbaby is too cute!" When I actually come across someone on the street with a well...cute furbaby. lol

I call Ahi my furryface..or fuzzyface. lol She responds to all my nicknames for her. :D

I use it sparingly, often in a funny sense, like "oh my fur child is probably missing me, I'd better get home soon!" I do call him my son though!

I definitely feel like Georgie's Mommy and not his owner. I know my husband feels the same way. As a matter of fact Georgie owns us more than we own him. You know he is my child when I come in hug my skin son give him loves and Georgie is next:D Yesterday he laid in my arms for about 20 minutes and I gave him belly rubs. Georgie does not allow us to pass him by and how could we he is soooo stinkin cute and sweet:D

lol... my girls used to have furby.. they would take the batterys out because they got on their nerves!!!

We call them...furbutts, furkids, furbabies, the girls and little man and "the kids"..I have 2 grown children from a previous marriage so I really do have kids but, Hubby never had children so these ARE his kids!

I call all my "pet dogs" babies.....the newborns are puppies or usually enfants....my "breeding stock" are my ladies and gentlemen......Like someone has said, I feel cold or hard calling them "dogs"....they are so much more to me than just "dogs".....

Only on here and to certain people do I use the term furkid or furbaby, and then not often, it's usually to differentiate between my sons and dogs in a post. At times I don't know what to call them, there so much more than dogs, but the "furkid" term brings to my mind, a hair covered human kid. I end up referring to them as pups, or my babies, Ruby is my little girl.

I use BOTH terms, online and in person. Nice thing about getting old is that you don't care what people think anymore!!

I use it IRL. I had used to refer to them as child substitutes, but its so much easier to say furbaby or the occasional furbutts :)

I'm such the crazy dog lady, that anytime a patient at work mentions their dog I whip out the YT calendar and am showing my furbabies off :p

When talking about Mina I refer to her as "Ther Princess". Everyone else are furbabys.

Tessie is definitely our "little girl" and we are always calling her our little girl or baby girl :) It's funny because I have responded with furbaby when people say- "You don't have any children or when are you going to have a baby?" - I have responded "We have a furbaby" :D My mom even calls Tessie her "grand furbaby" :D

I don't use furbaby verbally...he's Maxiepoo, which is not much better. On YT...yes I will use furbaby.

GRANDPUPPYS!!!!! I love my grandpuppys! Zoe is 1/2 corgi and 1/2 jackrussel (we think),Ein is a tricolor corgi and is only 4months old. They come over and play with the rest of the pack. It really does look like a bunch of kids (not goats) in the backyard playing chase.

I am of the older generation and furbaby, furkid seem weird to me. We have called them our dogs, Doggy Babies, Yorkie Babies or just babies for as long as I can remember. I do not have any prejudice in my heart and am a love child of the 1960s and an old hippie but, am not always caught up on new ways of saying things.
My 21 year old granddaughter gently corrects me when I say something not used anymore like: my grandfather was an Indian, one doesn't own a dog, little people are not called dwarfs, you never say colored person when talking about a child with interracial parents, homosexuals are referred to as gay, and gender can be a choice now ( ? ) Unwed parent, is single parent. A bad person, is damaged. A poor person is never lazy, always underprivileged, I am not fat but, overweight. Christian does not mean a person who loves Jesus, but means someone who is old fashioned and judgmental. Sigh.... I could go on and on but I might say something that is not bad, I mean cool, I mean..............

It does seem as though some people are entirely over sensitive while others are open season for attack. They call good evil and evil good. Of course it is all subjective now isn't it? Ha!
If we can't "own" our dogs then can't they be taken from us by anyone who wants them? What would a dog do without and owner? Run wild in the streets like a stray? What nonsense.
